I've been dragged into Facebook Chat being a major means of communication to my friends.
However lately it's been a total pain in the ass. Anytime someone sends me a message in chat one of two things will happen:
1) If I am surfing in an alternate tab, all typing in text boxes stops. I have to select a new tab/window/text box before I can continue typing. This is a total pain in the ass
2) If I am currently viewing a window different than that which Facebook is open, Facebook decides to automatically change which window I am viewing. This is even more of a pain in the ass.
I've never had that Firefox problem, though - maybe there's something in your JavaScript options that's letting the window-switching happen. I don't use multiple windows of Firefox enough to have encountered this.
There's a bug logged for this in Firefox's bugzilla that I've been following.
You can turn off the sound notify in the options tab of the chat feature and that makes the error stop... they haven't figured out what in Firefox is actually causing the problem yet.

meebo is another client that runs facebook chat. You just go to www.meebo.com, no program to install or anything. Actually using the facebook chat within facebook is almost universally terrible.
I use Pidgin with the facebook chat plugin. Asides from random connection issues, it suits me fine, as facebook chat is otherwise a massive pain to deal with.

I don't know how to solve Firefox though.
