I've been playing this game since Christmas and isn't as fun as the previous GTs. There are too many restrictions on the Aspec races so you're constantly buying and upgrading new cars which costs a lot so you don't make any headway. Bspec is unbearable I don't know how you guys do it. And all that without mentioning the terrible menus and load times.
The frustrating part is the actual racing is great. The physics and graphics are superb. But they're stuck inside a game with questionable design decisions. I'll keep playing it maybe it will open up later on.
Yeah, I love the racing and the presentation - they're amazing - but I'm wondering if I'm going to have to start grinding races soon to get anywhere.
Grind the seasonal races as much as you can stand - I went from level 5 to level 20 and got like 1.5M credits from doing 9 of the 10.

I'm trying to do the Mini race now on the Bonus Race 02, and it's impossible! Have you managed to gold that one? I wonder if the key is to crank up my acceleration somehow, perhaps by buying the customizable transmission kit.

1.3 million B-Spec experience away from level 35. Which is how far away I am from getting an X2010, because fuck trying to do the event without a wheel.
I think I'm gonna leave my guys racing on Tsukuba overnight, just to halve that. Meaning that I should be joining Sabo in driving about in one after the races on Sunday.

FUCK THESE FUCKING SEASONAL FUCKING RACES. THEY'RE IMPOSSIBLE. THEY'RE BULLSHIT.
I just wasted a bunch of time and money trying to beat a few of them. It's fucking impossible. These are total bullshit. You have to have supernatural fucking reflexes and a masters degree in drifting to get anywhere near winning in these. These are not fun. They've actually sapped my will to keep playing this game for the time being.

Yeah I got like 8th on the Mini race. That one is really hard - I haven't gotten gold on any of them, but I did get 3-4 silvers which netted me a decent chunk of change. Even in the races where I got silver, I was never within 3 seconds of the leader, though...on a few I think I could've had him if there was another lap maybe.
Dozens of cars for B-Spec = Tens of millions of credits.
Upgrades for those cars = Yet more tens of millions of credits.

Holy fuck, I just had a pretty big shock from this game. I hadn't played for a while, and I thought I'd have a go at some of the special events. I'd already got gold on the top gear test track intermediate, so I tried beginner and expert. Half an hour of driving stupid old slow things later I'm done, and I celebrate by taking a Formula GT to a race against VW golfs and imprezas and such. It was a pretty small track, so I set the transmission for acceleration...
OHSHITWHATTHEFUCK everything was so fast and I had no idea what was going on. I slammed into the back of the car in front of me instantly, about two laps later I was lapping them and I wouldn't even see them before I slammed into them. It was insane, and a very nice break from the top gear challenges where I was reading the forums on the straights.

God-fucking-damnit. It's looking more and more like I won't be able to make it tomorrow. I really, really don't want to miss out on tomorrow. Fucking parents. Is there anything we can arrange?
I too won't be able to race, so would be more than happy to postpone to another day. Don't know about the other chaps though? Seems like there are a lot of people who got the game for Christmas, so could well be that there'll be plenty of people around to take our places...?
I'm gonna go back and read through this thread so I apologize if a lot of this has already been answered. I got this game for Christmas and so here are my random thoughts and some specific questions.
Thoughts:
I'm having a lot more fun than I expected. The driving is just really relaxing. The longer a race is, the more I enjoy it. Once I get into first place, I can kind of just zone out and think about other things.
The interface is crappy. So much shifting around in menus to get basic information. For example, go into the seasonal race menu and find I need a very specific kind of car. Ok, I'll get the car. Then I need to tune it, but I have to target a specific HP and weight. But I can't remember what those are unless I go back to the seasonal race menu and write the shit down. Way too much loading and moving around in the menus.
Overall the loading is just a pain. I don't want to do license tests just because of how much loading is involved. I have A and B, but I don't want to do more until I have to because there's as much loading as there is playing.
Why are some races in a "series" where I can push one button to do all three races, and others appear on the same screen, but they must be run one at a time? Again with all the loading.
Questions:
The seasonal races are killing the feeling of progression for me. I must be doing this wrong. I got gold in all the beginner cup races which got me to about level 6 or 7. Then I started doing seasonal races. Well these pay out way more EXP and cash. Getting 2nd place in one of those netted me about $180,000 and a ton of EXP. After doing seasonal races for a day, I was suddenly level 16. So now I go back to the actual "game" and try doing the next set of races (whatever comes after beginner) and I'm getting less than 1,000 EXP for a first-place finish. Doing that, it would take forever for me to hit the next level. And that's not fun. So now I realize seasonal races are where the real money and EXP are and it makes me not want to play the actual game. What am I missing?
There are 1,000 cars in this game? Where are they all? The dealerships have the premium cars and it looks like those add up to say 150? Just guessing. Then the used cars have another 30-40 cars. And those rotate, I get that. But still, where are all the rest?
And what's the difference between the used cars and the online dealerships?
Anyway, I'm probably sounding foolish to the veterans but I'm just getting started (level 17 now).
My PS3 is brand new and I have no one on my friends list. PSN ID is Fleet_of_Foot
The seasonal races are just meant to be bonuses and online brags.
Before they implemented those, the game moved fairly slowly and you had to do a LOT of repeat races to earn cash to get cars to compete in later races.
All the cars at the dealerships are premium cars, all the used cars are standard cars. You cycle in 6 new used cars after every race. There are 1000+ cars in the game, but the vast majority are standard cars you'll buy in the used lot.
So I've put ~20 hours into GT5 since Christmas and really enjoyed it, but I can't shake the feeling that I like Forza 3 a lot more.
It's great that GT5 has more stuff like karting, NASCAR, and rally, but I'd trade those in a heartbeat for a better UI (like Forza's "Show me which cars I have that are eligible for this race" button alone would almost be worth it :P) and better crash effects.
There are just a lot of really strange design decisions in GT5 - why not just make my whole garage available in Arcade mode without marking stuff? Or better yet, every car (or at least all the premiums)? Why can't I upgrade my brakes? How come my "fully customizable" transmission only lets me adjust the top speed? And so on...

Surely I can't be the only one thinking this?
If you are on the splash screen for the event and hit the garage button on the bottom right it will only show you eligible cars.
I agree that marking cars for use in Arcade mode is a little bit dumb, but then again, if you have 500+ cars in your garage, it's going to take the game a while to load them all up for you to pick from for an arcade race.
Fully customizable transmissions are actually fully customizable once you get into full race cars or conversions.
I appreciate the sort of incomprehensible dream logic by which the license tests obtain the aesthetic conceit of having hundreds of fans in the bleachers and a team of purposeful-looking men with clipboards all eagerly watching you repeatedly fail to shave 1/20th of a second off the task of driving through a single turn.

Did not know that. I just thought it kicked you back to the main garage.
Spent some quality time with my idiot B-Spec driver the other day. I was doing the vintage supercar races in the second tier. Those damnable early Lambos where pissing me off big time. I maxed out the Challenger I used for one of the seasonal races and it got me through Rome and Suzuka but I could not get past the inevitable first and second place Lambos. I had to take the Shelby 427 I won from the muscle car race, ligthen the sucker maximally and max out the horses. It had the weight of those damn Lambos and at least 50% more power and my driver still struggled. So damned annoying.

What's annoying is if you ever get in front, your driver will make a huge gap. Making you wonder WTF was the problem with passing everybody in the first place.
You ain't kiddin (on both counts) The number of times I've watched the driver not nose inside on a corner to overtake is infuriating.

I've just found I have to tune the hell out of the car and give them a straight up horse-power advantage over the other AI so that my Bspec can take them in the straights. Otherwise he just refuses to do it at any other time (99% of it anyway)

I witnessed my B-spec driver begin to pass a car on the right on a long straight, he got his nose even with the door of the other car, then braked to get back behind him and move to the left side to finally pass by the end of the straight.
Seriously, it's like they over-exaggerated the tendency of MR cars to step the back end out just so they could claim handling physics were specific to each car.
The Elise doesn't have a wheelbase long enough for it's ass to be so dominant over the rest of the car.
They finally had to make the pickemup tucks easily available I guess. I may have to pick up one of those German touring cars for the Deutsche Touringwagen Championship and continue saving clams for the F1 car. Then I just have to figure out how to make it though the damn NASCAR series at the Extreme level.
Do each event of the NASCAR series individually and gold them, ESPECIALLY Daytona, then do the championship so you can easily win the first few events so that even if you finish last from getting wrecked on the next to last lap (like me) at Daytona, you still win the championship handily and get all the bonuses as such.
