Will the bottom of a vodka infusion kill me?

Pretty sure I know the answer to this one but I'll go ahead and ask anyway, to be on the safe side and all...

I've had some vodka in a jar, with slices of ginger and a piece of a chilli at the bottom, for roughly four months now. If I'm game enough to eat the ginger and chilli, will it kill me? As in, will it be off and unhealthy?

For anyone who's curious the vodka is pretty nice now. I tried it after about three weeks of infusing and it was pretty sharp and bitey. Now it's a lot smoother.

I don't know where he got the scorpions, or how he got them into my mattress.

I don't think there is a single bacteria that is going to survive 4 months in vodka
It might not be super delicious, well maybe it will...
Either way, it ain't gonna kill you. Shit's prolly safer than the chicken sandwich you had for lunch yesterday.

Why would it kill you? I mean it's just ginger and some alcohol, right?

It's 4 month old ginger and chilli. I probably wouldn't usually eat that.
I was pretty sure that it would be fine, I guess I just... Wanted confirmation.

Well, when it's been in vodka for 4 months, it's fairly preserved by now.

The only thing that makes old food dangerous is bacteria, none of which will be in a bottle of vodka.

Sure its 4 months old but you stored it in vodka. You're good to go.

I dissolved some skittles in vodka once. Hilarity ensued.

This should be great. Please do this in front of people, preferrably with a camera recording.

I've been eating the watermelon from three week old or so jar of tequila/watermelon. I couldn't keep a jar of it around an undrunk for four months though because I like drinking.

It won't be unhealthy, unless you consider food with unusually high alcohol content "unhealthy". You'd do worse drinking a double-shot of 151, than a few peppers with vodka. Probably won't be deliciious.

I'm curious to know if this was raw ginger or candied? The latter would likely be delicious, ackshully.

What kind of pepper is it?

I feel the desire to combine cantaloupe and tequila.

I'm surprised the watermelon held up that long

I have been thinking about doing a infused watermelon one of these days, but reading stuff about it implies it is actually fairly tricky to do right (and time sensitive), so who knows if I'll ever get around to it.

Well I did drink most of it within the first two weeks. It started to disintegrate and clog the spigot though. I plan on trying something more robust(?) next time around.

I wouldn't expect it to be very good at all. Generally when you do an infusion like this, all the flavor is leached out into the alcohol. I'm not sure, as I've only tried this with fruit, but the fruit itself tastes more of alcohol and less of fruit than the resulting liquid. I'd be surprised if the chili was even spicy.

The vodka sounds pretty good though. Are you mixing anything with it? I wonder what would be good in place of an olive if you made a martini with this.

I'm thinking you do it like a cheap Tequila. use pepper in replace of the salt. Get a jalapeno for a lime. And just do work on it.

My friends and I once cut a large hole in a watermelon, scooped out about 1/4 of the inside, and added some vodka.

    Shit was delicious.

    1. You're not supposed to leave the fruit in there after a certain point.

    2. It's going to taste REALLY nasty. Like concentrated grain alcohol. Trust me. I've tried this.

Well, for one, it wouldn't be a Martini in the slightest. I'll give people their "Vodka Martinis", but once you flavor it you're dealing with a whole new animal.

Okay, I've got to know... *why* did you do this? I mean, it's going to be fine for you to eat... but was it intentional? I mean, did you have it in mind from the beginning? ... and why? I'm just curious. =)

People eat meat that's been hanging out in the sun for days, and eat that just fine.

Consuming something seeped in alcohol should be okay. But probably not delicious.

I'd start with un-spiced rum if anything...
