Does anyone know any decent FREE MMORPGs? I'm in need of something random and trivial sort of game to keep me from dying of boredom for the next few weeks.
here you go. basically any of the good ones are discussed within the thread. if not, you can always ask about something listed, and most likely someone will have tried it.
At the bottom of that thread Kea linked I have written down some games I can recommend to everyone. I don't know what you specifically didn't like about Runescape (there is so much to hate) but the polar opposite would be Atlantica: a game that combines Final Fantasy-esque fighting with the MMO genre.

I enjoyed Runes of Magic quite a bit when I started into it, though I eventually got bored of it (as I do with most games mind you)

Free Realms. Free game with bonus stuff if you -really- want to pay for it. I've been having quite a bit of fun with it... level 10 chef, level 8 race driver.
Depends on what you look for in an MMO. For free MMOs, I like a little bit of grindy. Ragnarok Online has fit that bill on and off for like eight years.
Dunno if its been mentioned yet but for a free mmo Huxley: The Dystopia looks pretty decent. Too bad it's not out yet... actually it was supposed to come out half a forever ago. But hey I'm gonna keep my eye on it, especially since it's free to play but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it turns into another horrible free Korean game.
I really recommend Guild Wars. A lot of content for twenty bucks.
...And, if you get the trilogy, there's an insane amount of content. If you get into it, you'll be playing it for a long, long time.
...if you enjoy PvP, from my experience... which I don't.
Just adding an opinion.
There's a truck load of quests and exploration you can do in just one of the settings. Combine that with all the possible class combinations and character builds and you have quite a bit to do without ever touching PvP. Now if you do happen to get into PvP then it's a bottomless pit of fun. Also you can solo just about everything in the game or do it with other people. Arenanet really went out of their way to allow people to play the game however they want.
Anarchy Online's base game (no expansions) is free. The game is much more fun with its first expansion Shadowlands but if you've never played it the base install will keep you occupied for weeks. Graphics are starting to get a bit dated (especially outside of Shadowlands) but I'd try it.

I will admit I also played the game last about four years ago (maybe more?). It just seemed really empty to me, with everything being instanced.
Argggh. There's one that's free while they're redeveloping it...European...can't remember the name now. Really neat art style.
Also, isn't D&D Online going free?
Spellborn.
It's not for everyone, but i am enjoying Spellborn a lot right now. I definately recommend it if you are tired of the asian free MMO's, this one is far more of a western RPG, no grinding, tons of quests, twitch and skill based combat ect. No Cash Shop yet, and even when it does come in, equipment basically barely helps you at all, its really based on player skill so the shop won't ever unbalance anything.

Maple Story is my free MMORPG of choice. Good variety of quests (not just grinding), nice community (it's really geared to the community), no nerfing of classes (everyone just improves to match if one class is better than the others), it also runs on almost anything.

Bad side to this game is its filled with 10 year old mouthy kids. It's like xbox live the MMO, but even younger.

That sounds amazing.
Be warned though, I couldn't get it working on Windows 7 RC x86 due to some flaky anti cheat software bundled with it.
