Microsoft Cancels Price Cut Announcement?

We all know about the long-awaited PlayStation 3 price cuts at yesterday's GamesCom press conference, but a report from MCV states Microsoft had similar plans that were pulled at the last minute. According to sources, Microsoft was to announce a price cut to the Xbox 360 Elite, and may have replaced the Pro unit with it. However, one electronics retailer claims that Microsoft decided to delay the announcement while waiting for Arcade and Elite units to clear up more from shelves.

Though the Microsoft conference this morning was absent of any such announcement, the news means we could see one coming soon. Microsoft tends to make its retail pushes with pack-in games near the holiday season, so we may see this announcement still coming in the near future.

OK, so Microsoft's thinking here is... what... exactly?

"Now that the PS3 is the same price, we're sure to move all these units that have been sitting in the retail channel! Pass the crack pipe!"

I, of course, say this because I'm nothing more than a bitter bitter man. I want this price drop so that I can buy a second 360 as a Media Center extender for my bedroom TV (standard def), and refuse to do so on the verge of a price cut...

A PRICE CUT I BELIEVE IS STILL IMMINENT.

Maybe the price cut is planned to happen suddenly at holiday time, to knock Sony's out. Or attempt to. I think it won't work though, if that's their angle.

If I had to guess I'd say they're probably waiting to see what effect the PS3's pricedrop will have on sales (ie. huge initial surge that eventually trails off or steady stream of increased sales). Not sure though. I'd imagine we'll still see a pricecut in the not too distant future.

This story is talking about the UK market.

If the PS3 Slim was the same price in the UK as it is in the USA, or hell, even if it just had normal UK rape tax applied, Microsoft probably would need to drop the price of the 360.

As is has been discounted less (the PS3 phat was already available for £250, and the slim being £250 is not much of a price drop) in the UK, they probably don't think that they need to drop the price any time soon. They are probably right.

Clearly they're recalling it to make a bigger price cut.

I mean, if I'd been languishing around going "Yeah, our console is cheaper, so we've got that edge" and suddenly the competition goes "well our hot new console is the same price" I wouldn't want to take it lying down.

    360 Elite @ $279.99?

Fake edit - UK market? Never mind, your prices are fucked six ways from Sunday regardless. :P

Actually Microsoft have increased the price of the Arcade Unit in the UK so why drop the price of the elite?

That would be awesome hardball to play on MS' part though.

Do newer 360s have the same failure rates as the earlier ones do? I've heard they're better, but not by how much. My younger brother owns a 360 but he's on his 4th one I believe, and I'm not sure if he's covered under MS's warranty anymore. His current system still suffers from overheating and will freeze during a game at least once a month; I've even had it freeze while trying to change my avatar's clothing.

They basically dont fail at all anymore. I actually had my PS3 fail twice and my 360 never fail, and my 360 is almsot 2 years old (Halo edition.). The refurbished ones you get after a repair are usually just as bad as the one you sent out when it comes to the 360 though. So him being on his 4th after sending them it for repair doesnt surprise me.

It was the initial Xenon/Zephyr models that had the failure rates. Surveys on the Falcon models and later have shown that failure rates are in line with the PS3/Wii. Jaspers would be even more reliable as they give off even less heat.

Predicting console failure rates is difficult because 94% of what counts as evidence is purely anecdotal. Allowing it to govern the console you purchase might seem like a good idea, but it has no effect on the actual likelihood of failure, if there are few things worse than going with one console because, logically, it seems more reliable, only to have it fail.

    Also, Elimination, cool fucking avatar.

The Xbox 360 HDD prices are actually not that bad if you get them off eBay or anywhere along those lines. You have to remember to compare them to laptop HDD prices, not desktop ones. The problem is more that MS is a little behind the times, 120gb should not be the biggest drive they offer when 250gb and 320gb are the two most common sizes offered on the parts market.

And that would get me at least 750 gigs 2.5" SATA for the price of their 120 gig disk.

Yeah, a lot of people tend to forget laptop hard drives cost more than desktop ones (surprise!).

Plus, of course Microsoft is going to do the same thing that every single company that sells HDMI cables retail does--overcharge. That's just what companies do. It would be nice if they halved it though.

You mean over multiple drives? The best price I see on NewEgg is $85 for a 500gb, and while that is indeed cheaper than Microsoft's MSRP, it's not cheaper than the 360 drive can be found new. (I see some 120gb available on eBay for under $75.)

Also remember that hard drive cost per gigabyte is typically higher the smaller the drive. A 160gb laptop hard drive costs $50, for instance.

Microsoft's markup for what amounts to a special enclosure is still too high, I agree, but it's not insanely so.

    What a tick.

Aren't the new boxes for the 360s not showing the Pro model anymore?

So Microsoft's gonna sell the Arcade for $199 and the Elite for $399 with nothing in between since the Pro is no longer being manufactured?

    The fuck?

You can get the 120gigs hdd for less than $60 if you shop around. There was a huge thread on gaf a while back when sears was selling them at that price.

    On Hard Drives:

I keep kicking back and forth the idea of getting a bigger hard drive for my 360 but I just realize that in the end the only thing it's good for in my situation is that I'd be able to have more than one game installed at a time.

The 60GB pack with the headset and 3 month Live card isn't a horrible deal at $85. I need a new headset anyway. I'll likely stick with my 20GB for the rest of the 360's life though.

Maybe they're waiting for the Pro to sell out of existing stock before dropping the price of the Elite?
