A baby boy, Howard, was born the Lovecraft family.
He later went on to be a writer, of middling success, and a racist, of great success. He suffered through life until he died on March 15, 1937, and was buried in his family plot.
After this, people loved him. Especially once nerds and the internet came around. He created what are now classics of fantasy, horror, and pulp, including the most famous of his creations, Cthulhu
He has inspired countless other authors, a great deal of artists, several different games of the roleplaying and board variety, and a host of other assorted ne'er-do-wells, including HR Giger, a horrifying artist who designed
Alien, Mike Mignola, the creator of Hellboy, and Metallica, who recorded several songs based on Lovecraft's stories. Every year people go out and chill at his grave to celebrate his birthday, which is decidedly
kinda weird, but that's what you get.
Here are some Lovecraft resources for y'all:
The Complete Works of HP Lovecraft
Yes that's right, it's all available free online. Recommended are "The Rats in the Walls", "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", and "At the Mountains of Madness."
The Commonplace Book Project
A collection of games, mostly of the text and point and click adventure variety, designed after ideas included in the text of Lovecraft's
Commonplace Book, which is chock full of ideas he stumbled on, most of them unused.
The HP Lovecraft Historical Society
These people are really dedicated to the ideas of Lovecraft, making mediocre films, recorded albums, and a host of props that could be used for a 1920s roleplaying game of some variety. They're kinda dorky, but also pretty fucking amazing at times, so you should check them out.
So Happy Birthday Mr. Lovecraft, it's your 119th now, and you have more fans than you ever would have imagined. Some of which you would hate because they are women or not of Anglo-saxon descent.

I almost copycatted him with this, but then I found that neat adventure game thing and I needed to post it for Orikae at some point anyways so

I have odd naming conventions

For some reason it was the only story to really send chills down my spine. The other ones I've read are good, I like them a lot, but I dunno
And I really don't know why, it honestly shouldn't
But that story does things to me
The name of Lovecraft's cat is just about the most racist thing in the world.
oh boy you weren't joking
apparently a guy made a joke about Cthulhu in passing and another guy pulled him aside and said something to the effect of "Cthulhu is real, and every time you say his name you give him more power, so don't joke around about that shit"
but oh man
No that's Hastu-
The Unspeakable One
HASTUR HASTUR HASTUR
