Any suggestions? I have no idea where a good place to buy them is, I don't know what the hottest shit is at the moment, or what should be expected of an at least halfway decent machine at what prices.
I have an EEE PC 901 and it's grand. It's so functional and portable that I haven't used a full on desktop in a year and a half. I keep expecting that one of these days I'll throw something at it that it can't handle but so far everything I've wanted to do on it, I've been able to. I use mine for image editing (GIMP), audio editing, web browsing, email, writing, and gaming. But by gaming I mean older games. Stuff like Morrowind is probably the upper end of what mine can do.
So yeah, I can certainly vouch for the EEE PC. Not to sound like a corporate shill, but it's a solid product.
I'd recommend an online retailer. AFAIK, Best Buy sells some of the older models, but that's not what you want. As for price, I've seen a few deals floating around for netbooks priced around $150-160, so keep an eye out on slickdeals or a similar website.
I know it's a long shot, but if you don't already have comcast service, and their triple play is something you might be interested they're currently offering a national campaign where if you sign a 2 year contract with their services you get a dell mini 10v for free.
This is the one I want and where I would buy it from if I had the money right now. I believe it to be the state of the netbook art right now.
I just bought one of these a little over a week ago. I dig it so far, but I haven't used it much so far. Waiting for classes to start and what not.
There is a new EEEPc coming out, or maybe already out?, with an 11 inch screen. I would have waited for that except the battery life took an expected hit.
Before you go and buy one sight-unseen online, I'd suggest going to trying a few out in-store. The keyboards on some of these things get freakin' tiny. Form factor is a major concern of mine, which is primarily why I'll be getting a Dell Mini 10v as soon as I can afford it. Full size keys on the keyboard, right and left clicking via buttons underneath the touchpad, and the 10v has the ability to put OSX on it, which is something I've been interested in doing for a few months.
We have one of those Asus 1005HA netbooks. We (the fiance and I) looked at dozens of the damn things in the weeks leading up to our purchase and we haven't regretted it. I would (and may yet) buy again.
I have an EEE901 here; excellent battery life, small keyboard, but easy to adapt to it. Running XP without problems, and i think they're very cheap these days. Does everything i need it to, Firefox, MS Office, Quintessential player, VLC etc.
I also heard that the 1005HA is good, with even better battery life, bigger screen and whatnot.

Personally I just got a MSI Wind U120 and am loving it. Make sure you get at least a 6 cell battery for decent battery life.
