    Jonathan Coulton is highly overrated.

He's not terrible. It's just that he's not great, either.

No, he is great. He is unfortunately "nerd-popular" though, meaning that if you go to see him, you get tons of people cheering at the wrong parts of his songs, due to recognition, and missing the parts that are truely genius.

The few songs of his I have heard are extremely mediocre.

    which ones have you heard?

maybe I can reccommend you some better ones.

the aforementioned Space Doggity is an amazing piece, IMO.

Kenesaw Moutain Landis is also one of my favorites, but it might not hold up so universally.

    I don't remember. They weren't memorable.

It is about Laika, the space dog, and it was created for a contest where the challenge was to create a song that pays homage to Space Oddity.

(I can't fvouch for the video, I haven't seen this one, but it's a free way to hear the song.)

Sounds like the other ones I've heard, of which I can't remember the names. The lyrics are kinda clever and fun, but the tune itself is just really meh.

I like that Coulton guy. He's pretty funny. But then again I have a really roundabout taste in music.

And all you people hating on Jonathan Coulton just haven't heard enough of his stuff yet.

And pray tell, what music do you really like?

Coulton is a singer/songwriter. The tune is important, of course, but like many singer/songwriters, it is more about his lyrics than his tunes.

That's actually pretty hard to nail down. I don't really have any particular super favorite styles or genres, and a lot of my favorite music is, um, how to describe it...situational? Like, most of the tunes I really enjoy are connected to something else, a movie, a moment in time, a memory, whatever.

There are only two artists/bands of whom I own all their albums and most of my CD collection is soundtracks or scores.

There are some other bands I do enjoy quite a bit, but I've just never was one for collecting music for whatever reason.

Yeah, and I generally enjoy his original works more than the parodies. But I like those a bunch too.

    Coulton is pretty good

I don't have a lot of material by him, though

Maybe it's not all as good as Skullcrusher Mountain or the Skymall Song

Most of the songs on my iPod are soundtracks to movies or TV shows or whatever

The first time I heard Skullcrusher Mountain was when I downloaded it in Rock Band. I flubbed up real bad during the half-monkey-monster bit because I was laughing a little too hard.

I like his stuff. I like to sing along with it in the car.

It's okay if others are not very into it.

Totally understand what Geek is saying when he describes mostly liking soundtrack-style music. I used to be like that. I'd write little scenes in my head to go along with music I was listening to.

    Weirdo

In my teen years I listened to Linkin Park's first album and set it to Matrix-style action scenes. So yes, I have a lot to be ashamed of.

I bought the majority of Coulton's discography about two weeks before Portal came out. (Thing A Week box, and Smoking Monkey)

Ever since then, I have just been trying to recapture the time when I was enjoying his music without a bunch of idiots cheering at recognition.
