Yes. Because, you see, Squall is a character in the Final Fantasy series and, in a thread about the Final Fantasy series people will frequently talk about the characters.
Honestly, the constant "not the Squall/laugh scene/FFX-2/whatever the fuck else argument again" whining is worse than the actual arguments.
I didn't bring that up at all, there is no need, I just disagree he's the best swordsman out of all the protagonists.
Also, just because Cloud was wielding the buster sword for 3 years, doesn't excuse the fact that he's made out of Jenova. This small fact is what made Sephiroth the beast he is.
Sure, sephiroth is an amazing swordsman through years and years of being in SOLDIER, developing all types of crazy materia and spells..but he was also created with the essential life force of the planet, somewhat like cloud.
I guess I just dislike the direction they went, from the kick ass, super deep storyline and character development of FF7 to FF8's soap opera plot/high school emo farts.
But at least they completely redeemed themselves with FF9. One of, if not my favorite FF.
Ok I'll stop on the comparing of FF games now and shitting on Squall.
Dude, they were talking about how the characters fight in game. Nobody was trying to turn this into some fanboy war until you showed up with your childish comment.
Just from the game:
Cloud's style:
Buster Basher
Can send foes flying with a single swipe of his massive sword.
AKA: Swings that sucker like a bat and aims for the cheap seats.
Squall's style:
Relentless Revolver
Corners enemies with chained combos.
AKA: Darts and weaves around his opponent with some almost elegant swordplay.
I'd suggest taking your own advice here.
It's not 8th grade anymore, you can get over the hard on for Cloud.

So hey! It turns out its a good idea to check the levels of your opponents in story mode before you engage them. Because fighting a Sephiroth thrice your level is good way to lear how to die.

Also check their equipment. I ran into several enemies that had 32000% damage, but 1 HP.

Squall's route has a few of these bitches. Always Bartz, for some reason. I hate them. It's not that they're hard, since these Bartz ones would always spam this easily dodged whirlwind attack. The bitch part comes when they also throw in a "Critical in 10 seconds" bonus. You can get a critical if you block a brave attack and counter, but these pricks NEVER use brave attacks. You can also use EX mode for 50% crits, but most times you probably won't have one. Or worse, you DO have the bar, but you need to save it for the next fight whose bonus is "EX Rush in 10 seconds". I was essentially forced to continue to retry time and time again hoping that my first and only attack would get a crit.
Pure annoyance, but my own fault really for wanting the DP.

And of course the kicker is that retrying would lose you DP anyway!
Alsos: Should I be giving evenly handing out the extra accessory slots, or do I just give up and pile them all on the same two characters? Will I eventually find more Rosetta Stones or is there another way to get more slots?
When you finish a given character's story, your points from each board are counted up, and you're given a star-based score with some items based on said score. I didn't get the last star in Squall's story, so I missed out on an item.
If I wanted to get the last item, would I have to do Squall's story again and do really badass on it, or do the points accumulate across multiple playthroughs?

Naw, hitting retry makes you lose story points. They're only used at the very end for filling up that star gauge. It takes you two playthroughs to max it out anyways and unlock the final treasure. Besides, the retry penalty maxes out at 100 per chapter, so it doesn't matter much.

Sorry, I didn't mean DP. But the points you lose from retrying, aren't those the same points with which you Unlock New Characters and shit?
Since Renzo mentioned it, here's what I figured out about the story mode for anybody interested in getting everything and 100%.
Each character story has 5 chapters, and at the end all your story points are added up to fill 4 stars. 1st star is a new skill, 2nd unlocks all the orange barries, 3rd spawns rare battle fights (warning, these fights are hard), and 4th spawns a new treasure.
If you want 100% in a story, you're pretty much looking at 3 playthroughs minimum. Unless you're so good you max the star bonus on your first try. This is what you have to do total during the story.
-Fight in every battle, and get all DP bonuses.
-Collect every single treasure chest/summon stone.
-Use every single potion and ether.
-Collect every single DP bonus. The spinning bar item at the top of the screen. This means the rosetta stone, both items, summon, AND gil rewards. That last part screwed me up so many times. At the end there should be nothing but bonus PP rewards on the bar.
So since it'll take you 3 runs to do everything, this is how I suggest going about things. 1st run, just play. Collect any treasure and try for DP bonuses, but don't bother breaking your back over them because a lot are almost sadistic at earlier levels. Just enjoy the scenery. 2nd run, start going for the DP items. So do the DP fights and maximize your points so you can get the highest reward possible each chapter. Even if it means skipping over the new items/summons. And then 3rd run, go through one more time and pick up every item. You can skip any fight you did previously to save time. If you go into Scan mode, anything you've done before is marked with a Clear tag. So pick up any loose items or fight any stragglers.
Hope that helps anybody.

As a note, people really need to watch Advent Children Complete and stop complaining about Advent Children ruining characters. There's a director's cut for a reason. Completely different movie.
You know, besides X, I had never been too huge on Final Fantasy, but holy shit the two main FNC games look incredible.
Three! Three! The PSP is getting Agito, a war torn, military cadet (like FF8), like game. The combat system is an improved version of Crisis Core's - you have a party of three. And it'll feature both adhoc and online play with friends.
Not that it's coming out anytime soon, but it's something to look forward to.
I thought someone had actually posted the order in this thread. anyone remember?
Yep.
Onion Knight --> Cloud --> Squall --> Terra --> Cecil --> Bartz/Zidane --> Tidus --> Firion --> WoL
---
Terra's the first character I've almost mastered. I'm not sure who I'm moving onto next. She's fun, but I don't think I'm going to main her. And yes, Meteor --> Holy --> Flare --> Ultima still smarts.
Just unlocked Shantotto. Dear god, she has 500% more snark than anyone else in this game. That automatically makes her awesome now matter how she fares in combat.
As a note, people really need to watch Advent Children Complete and stop complaining about Advent Children ruining characters. There's a director's cut for a reason. Completely different movie.
Not really. I'll concede that it is a better movie, but not by much. It's nowhere near a completely different movie. Besides, most of the extra development goes to Denzel, whom I couldn't care less about. I suppose in a way it also goes to Cloud because of his interactions with Denzel, and therefore makes him seem less depressed, but not enough to save the fact that they put him back in that state again for no particular reason.

To tear you guys away from Dissida discussion for a bit, I need some advice.
I'm going through Final Fantasy X again, and I can't decide if I should get Wakka's limit breaks and ultimate weapon or just say fuck it and skip them.
Arguments for getting them: Completionism
Arguments against getting them: Blitzball
Blitzball is just too random to be any good at all.
Me: "I have 16 Shoot and am right next to the goalie with 9 block it's totally in right?
Blitzball: "Wellllll not quite, see, your shoot is actually 8, because we randomly add anywhere from -50% to +150% to the number, and the goalie's block is 13 for the same reason, so actually, he caught it and now the other team has the ball"
I may skip it after all. I mean...you don't need Attack Reels for the monster arena, right?
