Blitzball is just too random to be any good at all.
Me: "I have 16 Shoot and am right next to the goalie with 9 block it's totally in right?
Blitzball: "Wellllll not quite, see, your shoot is actually 8, because we randomly add anywhere from -50% to +150% to the number, and the goalie's block is 13 for the same reason, so actually, he caught it and now the other team has the ball"
I may skip it after all. I mean...you don't need Attack Reels for the monster arena, right?
Wakka's Damage Broken Overdrive is vital for killing most of the magical bullshit bosses.
I hated those guys. There was no point.
Even with Double Oblivion, Trio of 999, and Blitz Ace?
i could beat the first few but after that you're hosed

Curses. Well...Attack Reel is the first one you get at least, right? So it shouldn't take too long.
Well yes, but when I play blitzball I don't want to coach, I want to play.
Sphere break was pretty fun for the 20 minutes or so I put into it, but at that point I just kind of wanted to move on.

Is there a secret button combination in Dissidia that makes the Computer opponents stop cheating at Chases? I swear to fucking god I've never sucessfully hit anyone with them.

it's good to wait a second or so before you attack, and mix up between brave and hp strikes
Shantotto has some of the best written pre and post battle dialogue in the game. It's like they knew they only had her to nail the FF11 fans with so they made sure they hit every base with her. I mean to Zidane she says: "A male Mithra? Perhaps not.."
That is such an obvious yet such an easily misable similarity. Awesome.
Dissidia's animation made me notice something I thought interesting - Squall is probably the best swordsman in the series. Everything he does is so smooth. By comparison Cloud is just heavy handed, Sephiroth predictable and Tidus and Jecht more athletic-based.
Well, when you think about it, nobody ever really comes out and says most of the FF main characters are particularly good swordsmen (kind of unusual for a JRPG). Cloud's sword is just big and I guess it's meant to overpower people, Sephiroth has supernatural strength as opposed to skill. Tidus is explicitly stated to be an inexperienced fighter, Zidane isn't mentioned one way or the other, Terra's more of a magic user, Bartz is an all-rounder, Cecil isn't really mentioned that much, and of course the NES heroes - Onion Kid/Firion/Warrior - are barely discussed at all.
Squall, on the other hand, was identified, several times, as the Garden's best student who apparently obsesses over learning to properly wield this difficult weapon, so maybe that's what they were going for.
I think Cecil and Squall are probably the only ones explicitly trained as far as FF heroes go.
I mean, Cecil was a knight, and a high-ranking one, so it makes sense that he was an ass-kicker, even if that is in no way reflected in his character in Dissidia.

It's a pity that no part of "The After Years" Cecil made it into this game. He's by far the most absurdly powerful Final Fantasy hero Square's ever created - his only potential rival in absurdly god mode powered up syndrome is DoC's Vincent. An older, more experienced, Cecil would have been nice. Something to hope for in Dissidia 2.
I also wish Yuna was in this instead of Tidus. It was either going to be Yuna/Seymour or Tidus/Jecht and Square sadly chose the later.
Kain was already in game during the alpha builds as Cecil's foil. They later changed him to Golbez and gave a number of his already-in-game moves to Cecil.
Jecht was a great addition to the villain roster even if he was a little out-of-place. They had enough mincing magicians already.
On the other hand I think I'd have preferred Yuna to Tidus, since the hero side could've used another caster and it would've been nice to see her voice actress handle the pre-X-2 part again.

Prishe was originally going to represent of FFXI.
Nevermind, ignore me. I am dumb. Apparently they actually said the opposite (they didn't use Yuna because then they'd have to use Seymour), unless that's a misquote but I will believe in the good of humanity.
Hm, I wonder who they could pick for dissidia 2...
FF1 - Hard to say - characters are too anonymous. Same for FF3.
FF2 - Probably Maria (the game needs more female characters, really, and she's a long-range attacker/magician), or maybe Lionheart or even Josef.
FF4 - Kain, Edge and Rydia would all be good choices.
FF5 - whoever (Gilgamesh, maybe?)
FF6 - Sabin would be great for a fighting game, he's already got a premade moveset, as would Cyan, Locke, Celes, or even Leo.
FF7 - could go with anybody, really
FF8 - not enough characters to really say; Zell's a good choice gameplay wise but he's not very popular or interesting. Quistis, Rinoa or Selphie would just be weird, and Irvine doesn't really seem to fit (guns). Maybe Seifer, Fujin or Raijin (probably the best choice).
FF9 - Steiner or Vivi, depending on what kind of fighter you wanted.
FF10 - Probably end up with Seymour.
Dissidia 2 would also be likely to include FF12 characters, so Vaan/...Vayne? Venat?
The problem with a lot of the older games is that they don't have enough memorable supporting villains to balance it out. You got a few like Rubicante and stuff but that's about it.
Just got to the first (and thankfully only) required Blitzball game in the...game.
That definitely refreshed my memory on why I hate it so goddamned much. Fuck you, Wakka and fuck you Monster Arena for requiring me to play that godforsaken minigame in order to challenge you.
Dissidia 2 would also be likely to include FF12 characters, so Vaan/...Vayne? Venat?
Cidolfus and Balthier.
Why is this even a question.
For the same reason Vaan was in the game in the first place.
Was Balthier not as popular in Japan or something? Because if the States' reaction was any indication he'd be a shoo-in going by gamer response, and Cidolfus would be interesting to build around. With his drones he'd be like a mix of Kuja and Golbez or something.
Vaan was a throwaway with poorly defined skills and Vayne's saving grace was that he was a non-combatant.
I went with Tidus as my first character. While I have yet to really master the game, its cool that the fights require strategy. For instance, the Emperor was killing me by getting to the EX thingey first and one shotting me. So I switched strategies, kept close to him at all times and used energy rain every time he started to cast his flare attack.

From watching trailers and video reviews, is this game basically a whole game comprised of those awesome fights only seen in cinematics, but this time you're actually playing those awesome fights?

Yes, for the most part.
I've picked the US version of this up, and it's still fun, despite having played the Japanese version since it came out. I'm still maining Onion Knight and Zidane though, even if I have to get all of their moves and the other characters again

yup
Bought. Even though I'm hardly interested in FF. Those fights are awesome.

Yeah it's pretty much Advent Children Fight Scene : The Game
Which is to say it is really awesome. Even if you never played a FF game this is an awesome action battler.

There is way, way more to this game than the videos and such really let on. There's a pretty absurd amount of customization, as well sub-goals within fights, lots of attacks to get and use. Meaty story mode, too - and it's just awesome to see FF heroes interacting in cutscenes.
I've actually only played as Cloud, so far, just to get used to the game, but it is awesome. Squall ho!
I just bought Dissidia, haven't started yet (charging the PSP) but I'd like to know:
What's the most direct way to unlock Shantotto?
There's only one way really, and it's not particularly direct.
Just play through the story mode until you defeat the final boss, which unlocks story segments focusing on Shantotto and Gabranth. Beat hers to unlock the option to buy her.
Well, each character has their own story segment until the very end. It doesn't matter which character you choose there or in Shantotto's story segment.
Anyone else skipping the cutscenes? After 2 story modes worth, I just can't take them anymore. There's no substance to the story whatsoever, and nothing of the "real" plot seems to have come up in the first two I did, just lots and lots of characters in weird stages of development moaning about shit.

I've never had any problem with the FF plots, they're generally enjoyable and interesting to me, even with repeating themes.
But for some reason this no-development story with nothing but empty conversations between characters about either stupid shit or weird idealistic tripe, combined with the same 10 or so environments, none of which feature much of any decor or style, just wasn't cutting it for me.
I love the game, but I think it'd be better without all the silly cutscenes, especially the pre-final battle ones that pretty much just look like the game itself, only you're not controlling it.

See, I am a sucker for any character interaction, regardless of how lame/boring it is. I probably wouldn't like the game nearly as much if it was just a string of battles with no plot at all.
Okay, while I like the game so far, but after completing campaign IV and two missions into VII, I can say that the story is utter trash except for one good line from Kefka and maybe
Cloud, of all people, pointing out that maybe, just maybe, helping Cosmos with her dirty work won't fix everything.
This is coming from someone who generally likes JRPG stories. Hell, I even liked Kingdom Hearts. Both of them.

Kefka calling Sephiroth "another sadist with a God complex", would it?
That line cracked me up. Especially since it's Kefka of all people saying it.

Who are Prishe and Shantotto? I never really got about to playing MMORPGs.
Prishe is a monk/white mage elvaan girl and main character of the Chains of Promathia expansion, which (despite her being a textbook example of a Mary Sue) is typically hailed as the best FFXI expansion of all. She fights alongside you in a couple CoP boss fights.
Shantotto is a black mage tarutaru woman who used to be a minister of the Orastery of Windurst, and is involved in a number of quests. She also stars in the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion where she assumes the undercover identity of Ambassador Karababa. She fights alongside you for one of the ToAU boss fights; if you can keep her HP up she's more than capable of soloing this fight.
Personally I would have had a hero/villain pair to represent FFXI and I would have gone with Zeid and the Shadow Lord but Shantotto looks like she'd be fun to play as
I've said this before but in my opinion, FFXI has excellent lore and I wish there were a FFT-style offline spinoff for people put off by MMORPGs

Don't forget dudes in giant suits of armor.
Playing Dissidia is making me really want to see a full FF title on the PSP with these graphics, ideally an FF6 remake.
Oh right I forgot Golbez and Exdeath, who are magicians in giant suits of armor. For some reason that seems contradictory.
I know that Shantotto is some kind of psychotic Tarutaru professor/sorceress who talks in rhyme.
The entire world fears her.
