I can account for at least five instances where they have killed kids, though two of them are off-screen.

    FFVI: Cyan's son.

FFIX: The Burmecian chldren (they get burned alive if you fail to protect them, but they still end up dead anyway).

FFX: In the FMV when Sin tears apart that island (forgot the name), you can see a couple of kids (and a baby!) get caught up in the typhoon of death.

Advent Children Complete: "My brother just died." :(

Dirge of Cerberus: A little girl (along with several other people) are tossed into a vat of collected Lifestream energy....and eaten alive.

The title has become sort of a loose framework though. If you didn't know anything about it, when you looked at some screens of XIII would you guess it's a final fantasy?

Wasn't Cid from IV also married? I distinctly remember talking to her and hearing her complain about the late hours he keeps designing airships. And I'm pretty sure she's alive at the end of the story.

So I've gotten Squall to 100 and mastered pretty much all of his abilities now. I'm trying to figure out which one of the villains I should start leveling now as I don't feel like I have much left to learn with squall. He's fun, but his lack of decent HP attacks outside of his starters is a shame.

As for FF9 designs, I'm just going to post this here. Amano did the original design of the characters. They were made super deformed later in the process.

I'd love to see his designs brought to life in a modern title that can better render them. I guess Dissidia is a good start, even if Nomura gave them a once over. I definitely feel like the I-VI heroes are the most interesting looking characters in the game.

Speaking of Square Enix games, I'm thoroughly confused as two why the 360 and PS3 are apparently getting two separate "Nier" games.

The 360 Nier Gestalt apparently has the masculine and chiseled/gruff main character, who's goal in the story is saving his daughter.
The PS3 Nier Replicant has the bishonen main character, the hermaphrodite supporting character, and the goal is saving the main character's sister.

Though I'm loving the art style and Jack Skellington-like enemies of Replicant. And bullet hell gameplay in a action game? Hell yes.

Looks much better than the final product.

The deformed characters are fine on the SNES. The sprites can actually show facial expressions and emotions, which is impossible on a proportioned sprite. But in 3d? ugh. Amarant actually looks like a badass in that pic, instead of a freakish mutant. Same with Zidane, for that matter.

That's not actually true. Like he did with FF7 and FF8, they were done by someone else (not Nomura though) and then they called Amano in for a 'second idea' to see what he'd do with 'em.

Nope! Amano is the one who did the original designs for the FF9 characters.
Toshiyuki Itahana took Amano's designs and redid them super-deformed style for the game.

Zidane, at least, is definitely Itahana's, as at E3 he was chatting to me about how he's seen two 'official' interpretations (Amano, Nomura for Dissidia) of his design and what he liked about their versions when I interviewed him for Crystal Bearers.

I am too—I like S-E games as much as the next dude, and I'll still be getting FF13, but what strikes me as awesome about Crystal Bearers is that it doesn't take itself very seriously. The part at the end was priceless.

Also, GAF found this pretty cool wallpaper. I don't even like anime much anymore, but I like the style a lot:

Reminds me, that artwork is on the discs and in the manual for the game. At least on the copy I own. I all ways wondered how the characters got from that to....

Well, yeah. Steiner looks SO badarse in that picture though, however Vivi looks like a retarded clown posing as a knight, Quina scares me and looks like it's taking a red E tablet. Zidane looks like a chick. Garnet's pretty good looking in that though and Freya is awesome. Wish Freya was more like that in the actual game, ditto with Amarant's look. Eiko....eh.

Despite him being comic relief, I all ways did love Steiner. He was such a loveable character, being all completely retarded 90% of the time.

I actually don't think 9 would have the charm it did if they went with the more realistic designs. It's super-deformed colorful and quirky world was the shtick for the game, and I'm damn happy they atleast tried something different.
