Quick question: I just started playing Persona 4 after 3, and I was wondering if it has the same grim reaper thing where if you stay in a level too long he'll come and kick your ass?

It's 7/8/09 in the game (P3), I'm level 20, and just defeated the Intrepid Knight. Does anyone have any tips on how to make grinding through Tartarus less of a pain in the ass?

Best way is to do as much of each block as possible in one night.
Skip as many battles as you can on your way up through the floors, until you reach a boss floor and the two way teleporter. Take that back to the lobby and save, and if you're feeling up to it, try the boss and see what you're up against. Otherwise just head back up to the floor right before the boss and fight there until you're warned about the reaper, then go up to the boss floor and repeat.
Also, don't waste your time fighting shadows that don't grant much XP. Just run around in search whatever enemy is the best use of your time (usually the Red Shadow, though this isn't the case when they're hard to kill) and shoot for those XP bonus cards.
Sorry for bringing up an older game, but I was wondering if anyone here knows how far up the demon auction status go in Devil Survivor? The faqs on Gamefaqs don't cover what the highest status is. Right now I'm a stone's throw away from unlocking the occult status.
I was hoping for the neutral ending, but I think I missed meeting the bartender on the last day. I guess it defaulted to the angel loving route since I had talked to the priestess a few times to find out the back story. It's a bummer that my first playthrough ended so lamely, though.

If you're talking Devil Survivor, then none of the endings are particularly mindblowing by SMT standards.
Even in the True Demon (or equivalent) path,
Naoya admits he has no idea how to go about the process of actually killing God.
...Ooh, wait, wait, wait. The Yuzu path is pretty awesome.

Does DDS2 have any benefits in a second cycle? Because I'll probably continue from this much improved DDS1 cycle instead.
I don't want to give up on the Demi-Fiend, but this whole Dormina/Gaea Rage BS is making it look like more trouble than it'll be worth at the moment.
Also, I became aware of the Recarmdora trick the demons have when I tried to outlast Cu Chulainn and Girimehkala in one attempt.
If you don't transfer data then the second cycle is when you can choose hard mode in DDS2 to fight Satan. You also get an extra ring. Mantras will also carry over but only to normal mode. Like, Hard -> Normal or Normal -> Normal will transfer mantras, but Hard -> Hard or Normal -> Hard will not.

So Satan is second cycle only? I guess that makes the DDS1 bonuses impossible to use, then(not that it matters much).
Yeah, transferring data automatically unlocks hard mode. Also if you transfer data be sure it's clear data. Not data saved at the very top of the temple. Clear data is what gets you an extra move at the very end.
Also, a hint to help with hard mode (or any other mode (ok well, not that it's a terribly hard game even in hard mode (ok, compared to other SMT games))), speedy ring + attack all physical first turn = win 85% of the time.
I decided to go through DDS1 again to beat all the optional bosses I ignored on my first playthrough, but made a fresh start rather than starting up from my old save. I wanted to go through the fun of learning all the mantras again, but now I'm regretting it a bit as I'll have to go through the whole goddamn game again to fight the demi fiend. I'm at the end and just have the 4 beasts, huang long, and metatron left.
About how long does it take to go through the whole game again with a Serph with almost all mantras mastered? I'm guessing I could just auto fight with ragnarok and auto soma on, but I'm still thinking it would take at least 10-15 hours to get to the point where I unlock the demi fiend, not to mention all the grinding I'll have to do to be strong enough to beat him.

Took me roughly 30 hours, including all the optional boss fights.
I was around 71 by then. (And the disastrous aftermath was shown earlier in the thread.)
Ugh.... I'm already at 41 hours (Serph at level 70) and I still have those few bosses left... I'm guessing I'll be around 50 hours when I go to kill Harihara. I don't know if I can handle going through the whole game again at this point if it takes that long...
Did you watch any of the cutscenes or explore every corner of every dungeon? I was hoping that skipping every story scene and tearing through every dungeon would cut a bunch of time off.

I did everything. I'm also replaying it for the story, because I haven't played it since it came out.
I blitzed through DDS1 on my first run since DDS2 had just come out and I was in a rush to get it done. This time I wanted to make up for that and see it all.
Alright, that's a little more reassuring because that's what I just did too. I haven't played the game in a while either and wanted to experience everything the game has to offer, obscenely powerful boss included.
I kinda find this practice of locking the uber bosses behind the New game+ door to be annoying, to be honest. I can accept that I probably won't ever beat them, but I'd still at least like to give it a shot or even look at them. Making it a NG+ feature is a pain because... well SMT games are one of the few games out there who say "70 hour playtime" and MEAN IT. I'm really not up to replaying that chunk of time again just for 1 boss. Heck, I once restarted P4 shortly into the first dungeon because I screwed something up, and it still took me 2 frigging hours to get back to where I was, and that was with skipping through everything.

DDS1 without doing any of the optional bosses on a New Game+ takes about 14 hours.

Also, NG+ cuts down on the time needed for mantra gathering. You're likely already halfway to maxed out by the time you start NG+. And you'll want them all for Hito.
I highly suggest spending time farming Horuses when you get to them/are able to, because they drop Magic Noises.
I suggest this now, because you are NOT going to want to farm them once you can't get any decent experience from them, you're going to want to sit in the Titania hallway and grab the lovely Vital noises.

Yeah it's really annoying. DDS2 did it right and it wasn't necessary in P4. P3 though did need new game+, because you needed to spend pretty much the whole game prepping yourself for the fight. You needed to get as many cards for stat boosts as possible. Not to mention maxing all social links to cut down on the grinding.
Just finished up Huang Long. Really cool looking boss but really easy once his pattern is down.
I think except for Huang, I beat some of the other bosses in a bad order... Aside from Fly Beelzebub (I scored a lucky 4300 damage crit), none of them gave me any trouble at all. Granted, I have every high level mantra mastered, but still...
Now onto the arduous task of preparing myself for the Demi Fiend... I have a feeling that he's the challenge I'm looking for.
He isn't a challenge. Challenge is too weak of a word to describe him. He's above and beyond any other RPG boss you have ever fought. If you don't use the pixie strategy then you will actually need divine help to beat him. You will need to go to a level beyond super saiyan to beat him.
I have some strange obsession with doing things the difficult way. I'll pour every moment of free time I have into this game until I've beaten him the proper way. Mark these words (I'll be eating them in a week).
I suggest setting aside at least 2 hours before each serious attempt. A failed run can sometimes last up to 90 minutes before the Demifiend decides you've seen hope for too long and he snatches it away from you.

Seconded. My average attempt usually lasted 20~ minutes.

Those attempts go by so fast too. You usually do a couple 20 minute attempts as warm up and then you get one that's going really well so you think maybe this is the one! Maybe I can beat hi- fucking dormina! I think I ended every failed attempt against him with a battle that lasted at least 45 minutes.

P4 on the other hand...
GIANT MECHA SHADOWS!
Thank you. Now to finish up the law route...and wonder where exactly I went wrong to be put in that route to begin with.

DDS1 without doing any of the optional bosses on a New Game+ takes about 14 hours.
I had inadvertently assembled a team that was weak to force, and had Mazan spammed on me until I saw angels.
