Welcome to the Official Penny Arcade Fighting Game Tournament thread. The purpose of this thread is to put the PA forum members head to head in some friendly tournaments. I've run a few tournaments in these forums already and the turn outs have been pretty positive. These tournaments are meant to be fun and hopefully help you meet some players on your skill level or people that can help you get better. As a note, all tournaments are being run on the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii when applicable.
This time around we are going to be featuring the following fighting games: Street Fighter 4 (SF4), Super Street Fighter 2: Turbo HD Remix (HDR), BlazBlue (BB), and Marvel vs Capcom 2 (MvC2). If the support is big enough, I will create tournaments for Soul Calibur 4, Virtual Fighter 5, Mark of the Wolves, Smash Bros, and Tekken 6. If I've missed anything on that list, please feel free to PM me a suggestion for a new game. I will let everyone know when I'm deciding to add a new game to the tournament field.
The current bracket of tournaments will be composed of one of the following three types: single elimination, double elimination, and suicide style. Single elimination is a standard one and done type of format, very unforgiving. Double elimination allows for a losers bracket and a second chance to win. Finally, the suicide tournament will have players losing available characters to play the further they get into the bracket.
At this time, all sign-ups are closed for the current tournaments, but I will be accepting new entries after a tournament ends. Right now this is a one man job (just me), so I'm pretty strict on how I want all of the information sent to me. I'm a big stickler for people actually reading the entire thread and posting information a certain way for sign ups and results. No seriously, I will warn you once if you post information wrong and will start yelling if it happens again. If anyone wants to volunteer help, just PM me and tell me what you'd like to do or how you think you can help. Any art skills are a definite plus. BTW, all art in this thread was provided by Robotbebop, so send him props via PM.
People are highly encouraged to root for their favorite players/teams. Light hearted trash talking is OK, but abusive comments are NOT allowed.
Finally, this thread is for the discussion of the tournaments ONLY. If you want to discuss strategy, tips, unlocking characters, or anything else like that for any of the games here, please post in the appropriate threads:
The Street Fighter 4 threadThe HD Remix threadThe Marvel vs Capcom 2 threadThe BlazBlue threadWant to play in a tournament, but don't want to bother with all the sign ups and stuff? No problem, why not create a Fight Fest!
Here's how it works:
Fight Fest Tournaments (FF)
Here are the current rules:
-Single elimination style tournament.
-All characters are selectable. That includes Gouken, Akuma, and Seth. There is no reason to have them banned at this time. They might be in the future if it is proven that those characters are broken.
-All games will be played with a 99 second time limit and the rounds set to 5.
-A player advances after winning two out of three games.
-After a game is over, the winner must keep his character while the loser has the option of changing.
-Any controller or arcade stick is allowed. However, turbo functions are NOT allowed. It is very difficult to prove their use, so once again, we will be using an honor system. Don't use turbo!
Tournament progression:
-All games are played that day. These tournaments will be finished in the SAME DAY. That means if it's scheduled to start on Saturday at 3:00, you better be ready to go.
-To avoid clutter on the boards, it is recommended that only one Fight Fest tourney be held per weekend.
-Sign ups are taken up to a certain time based on the designated leader running the tournament.
-After the cut off time has been reached, the leader will then create a bracket and post it up to the forums.
-Everyone who wants to play must be on XBL/PSN 15 minutes before starting time.
-It is up to the players to check the boards to see who they will be facing first.
-Once a match is over, a player must message the tournament leader with the results. The leader will then tell him who his next opponent is.
-The entire tournament shouldn't run more than an hour to an hour and a half.
-Do not post your results in the forums unless you can't reach the leader.
-This style tournament is meant to be quick and painless. Do not let it drag out if at all possible.

Here are the current rules for the SF4 SET (PLEASE READ):
-Single elimination style tournament.
-All characters are selectable. That includes Gouken, Akuma, and Seth. There is no reason to have them banned at this time. They might be in the future if it is proven that those characters are broken.
-All games will be played with a 99 second time limit and the rounds set to 5.

-Any controller or arcade stick is allowed. However, turbo functions are NOT allowed. It is very difficult to prove their use, so once again, we will be using an honor system. Don't use turbo!
Tournament progression:
-Once the bracket is posted, find your opponent and either PM them here or send them a message via XBL.
-Establish a time to play that works for both players.
-Play out your matches according to the rules above.
-Post up the results in the forum in the following fashion:
SF4 SET:
MNC Dover (Zangief) < TheSuperWoot (Chun-Li)
MNC Dover (Sagat) > TheSuperWoot (Chun-Li)
MNC Dover (Sagat) < TheSuperWoot (Chun-Li)
TheSuperWoot > MNC Dover 2-1
-Failure to post up your results properly will be an extremely stern talking to by me. Seriously, it makes it easier for me to pick out results from the posts this way.
Other notes:
-This is a friendly PA tourney and as such, we are relying on an honor system. If you lose, you lose. Congratulate your opponent and cheer him on to win the whole thing. Seek revenge in the next tourney.
-All match-ups have a three day window to be completed. Once a match has been completed, it is up to the players to send each other PM's or messages to start up their next match. If the opponent needs an extension, then it must be agreed upon by both players and it doesn't hold up the tournament.
-In the case where one player has sent repeated PM's or messages with no response, then the player that is sending the messages must send a PM to both me and the opponent, as well as post in the forum. If no response is heard with 48 hours then the player who sent the message to me will be automatically advanced to the next round.
-If two players can't connect to each other and it's still the first round of the tournament, then one player will be reseeded to the opposite end of the bracket. If there are connection issues after the first round, then one of the following two options must be followed:
1)One player forfeits.
2)Both players play against a neutral 3rd party and based on the results of the match-ups, one player is eliminated.
-These rules can be changed via player suggestions and my discretion.

Here are the current rules for the SF4 SST (PLEASE READ):
Here are the current rules:
-double elimination style tournament.
-Each match is a best of five games, with each game played as best of five rounds.
-Each game has to be won with a different character forcing the winning player to have won with three different characters. The losing player can continue to use any character that he hasn't won with.
-After a round is finished, the losing player gets to choose one character from the winning players three characters and eliminate them from further play. This will create a finals situation with both players having four characters eliminated from play.
-The finals will follow the same rules as the rounds prior. This would mean both players would have to win three out of five games with 3 characters that haven't been eliminated in the rounds prior.
-Here's an example of a typical game:
-Ruffnite and The Sneak are playing each other in round one.
-Ruffnite starts out by choosing M.Bison and The Sneak chooses Ryu.
-Ruffnite wins the first match with a score of 3-1. Ruffnite now has to choose a different character that isn’t M.Bison while The Sneak can choose anyone he wants. Ruffnite chooses Ryu and The Sneak stays with Ryu.
-Ruffnite wins the second match with a score of 3-2. Ruffnite now must choose a third character that isn’t Ryu or M.Bison. Not wanting to risk having his best character Fei-Long possibly being eliminated, Ruffnite chooses Honda instead while The Sneak switches to his best character, Chun-Li to avoid elimination.
-The Sneak wins the third match 3-1. Ruffnite can choose anyone he wants again, except M.Bison or Ryu and The Sneak can choose anyone except Chun-Li. Ruffnite chooses Zangief and The Sneak goes back to Ryu.
-The Sneak wins the fourth match 3-0. Both players are now on the verge of elimination. Ruffnite again must choose another character that isn’t M.Bison or Ryu and The Sneak must choose a new character that isn’t Chun-Li or Ryu. Fearing elimination, Ruffnite pulls out Fei-Long and The Sneak goes with Ken.
-Ruffnite wins the fifth and final match 3-2.
-The Sneak now gets to choose to eliminate either M.Bison, Ryu, or Fei-Long from Ruffnite’s character selection pool for the rest of the tournament. The Sneak eliminates Ryu making him unplayable by Ruffnite for the rest of the tournament. Had The Sneak won, Ruffnite would have had the choice of eliminating Ryu, Chun Li, or Ken.
Tournament progression:
-Once the bracket is posted, find your opponent and either PM them here or send them a message via XBL.

-Once the bracket is posted, find your opponent and either PM them here or send them a message via XBL.
-Establish a time to play that works for both players.
-Play out your matches according to the rules above.
-Post up the results in the forum in the following fashion:
MvC2 DET:
MNC Dover (Cable, Sent, BB Hood) < TheSuperWoot (Storm, Rogue, Ken)
MNC Dover (Jill, Cyclops, Guile) > TheSuperWoot (Storm, Rogue, Ken)
MNC Dover (Jill, Cyclops, Guile) < TheSuperWoot (Tron Bonne, Mega Man, Roll)

The tournaments are going to officially start this Saturday, the 29th of August. If you guys feel like you want to get started sooner, then so be it. Also, if I screwed up your XBL/PSN name, please let me know ASAP so that I can fix it. I will be updating the brackets daily in the evenings. Feel free to ask any questions or post any concerns.
Good luck to everyone and have fun!

To anyone I'm matched up against, I won't be able to start early. It's a kind of crazy week for me. Looking forward to getting things rolling Saturday / next week though.
Either way, to everyone I'm with I'm fine with starting early, just know that I'm also starting school this week so we'll probably have to talk about scheduling.
May the best man (or woman) win.
This is going to rock.
EDIT:
The two BlazBlue 360 tournaments currently have the same bracket image.
The SST has the DET's bracket image.
Fixed.
Why thank you!
Fighting games are like riding a bike. Well, as long as you can remember the different ways to throw between SF4 and HDR. That shit ALWAYS fucks me up.

I keep wanting to write up a basic tourney management application in PHP too, one of these days I'll get on that.
Oh, hey I'm making a game! Check it out: Dr. Weirdo!
Stolen and sig'd. So awesome.
I think you mean B:L, Mal is my opponent.
Unless I'm totaly missreading the bracket Lightor216 is your first oponent.
But If I beat B:L and you beat pook and him then we will be up against one another.
The rectangles in the middle are the starting rounds. Winners go right losers go left.
I know but you're on the same rectangle as I am, that is why I thought I was fighting you.

Easy Specials - (hopefully) everyone would agree this would be disabled
Unlimited Characters - really should be set to disabled as well (so we don't have more powerful versions of 3 characters available), though the rules say "all characters selectable"
Astral Heats - debatable, if we're going like the arcade version (3 characters have Astrals) or where every character has one (added for console)
I doubt anybody would take advantage of the first two, but good to have it outlined anyway.
Agreed, Astral Heats can definitely stay. They don't really give you any advantage. Generally anytime you could kill someone with and astral heat, a normal super would do the job too. With some characters the super is a better decision because the inputs make an astral more challenging (i.e. Jin, Hakumen).
Oh and Mr Barrabas saturday seems ok but I may or may not catch the UFC fight that night. So if our fight must wait till then for you then we might have to fight sunday. It don't matter, just let me know.
Great job on the thread Dover.

I don't recall anyone using him in previous tournaments, so it may not be an issue.
Bring on the champ! We will fight on Tuesday!
siiick, teach me the ropes. We should throw down in SF4 too, since I haven't played that since BB came out.

Yeah, still is. Even though they did balance him out in general, due to the code there are nasty tricks you can do with the RD turning it into a free-be. I don't agree with the ban, but as of now he still is.
I'm pretty sure he just moved and his domicile is presently internetless. Last time I talked to him I think he said he'd be back in a week or so.

Keep up the good work, thanks for letting me participate.
That might be just enough time to remember how to play.
Truth.
Barring any unfortunate nonsense (which isn't out of the question, I've been in the goddamn place for almost 3 weeks without internet), I should have internet by Friday night.
Then it will be time for someone's shit to get kicked in the fuck.
