Champions Online - Out Now!

From Cryptic Studios, the creators of City of Heroes, comes a new super-hero MMORPG for the PC and Xbox 360.

Due for release in September 2009, Champions Online is currently in closed Beta testing. They are still accepting applications to get into this closed Beta, so you still have a chance to try the game before it's out!

So what makes Champions Online a game that should be on your radar?

Here's some of the things that set this game apart from some of the other MMORPGs on the market right now:

Character Customization
Champions-Intro.jpg

Champions Online takes the character customization of City of Heroes and turns that dial up to 11. Beyond simply configuring costume pieces and colors, Champions Online gives you full control of your character's height, weight, body proportions, and even their stance and running animations. Want a giant, oversized brute with massive arms who stalks forward with menace? Done. How about a savage beast, who runs on all fours? In Champions Online, it's possible.

In addition to being able to customize the appearance of your individual character, Champions Online also gives you control over the color of your character's powers, and the look and color of your character's weapons (if any). If you want green flames, lavender eye beams, or a gold-plated shotgun, the choice is yours.

But where is Champions Online truly different from other MMORPGs, especially its spiritual predecessor, City of Heroes?

Combat
Champions-Combat.jpg

In Champions Online, you have your fairly standard "Green and Blue bars" of Health and Energy. Predictably, your Health is the amount of damage you are able to take, you use your Energy bar to utilize your powers.

But where is this game different? Every hero has a basic attack, whether it's punches or fire blasts or pistol shots or whatever, that actually builds Energy, rather than using it.

The result is that truly, your Energy bar is never really empty for long. Combat is an action-packed game of building up your Energy bar with combos of basic attacks, and then using that Energy to unleash your more potent powers.

Downtime is minimal, combat is fast and very few powers have "cooldowns" or "recharge time".

Additionally, very few attacks "root" your character in place, allowing you to freely move about the battlefield. In many cases, this sort of "run and gun" style not only looks dynamic, it's good tactics, as some enemies sport area of effect attacks and other effects that are going to make you want to move out of the way.

Every character is capable of using a Block function, as well, mitigating incoming damage at the expense of continued attacks. Many of the higher level enemies have "tells", indicators that a large and very damaging or dangerous attack is incoming, and you better block!

The combat system in Champions Online is closer to "beat 'em up" games like Marvel Ultimate Alliance than traditional MMORPGs. There is a bunch of tiny details that collectively different in pronounced ways. For example, much of the objects in the game are destructible and, depending on your strength, can be lifted and thrown at enemies.

A very dynamic combat system, featuring unorthodox power usage, is really important, because the game is very big on...

Create Your Hero, Your Way
Champions-MakeYourOwn.jpg

More than just offering visual customization options, Champions Online truly allows for freedom in character design by featuring a classless, powers-based level structure.

That's right, in Champions Online, there are no classes, and few limitations on what powers you are able to select from.

Powers in this game all fit into Frameworks, loose collections of related powers that constitute something of a "set". For example, all the Fire-related powers are in the Fire Control framework, while all of the gun and explosive based powers are in the Munitions Framework.

However, you can choose from any Framework you want, and mix them however you want. If you want a gun-toting half-dragon necromancer who carries an assault rifle and raises the dead and can breath fire, that's your business.

There is, obviously, a reward for specializing in a single Framework: Every power in the game is on a Tier, from 1-3. The higher Tier powers are, obviously, more powerful and unlock at later levels. If, however, you have a multitude of powers from a single Framework, the higher Tiers of that Framework unlock at a lower level for you than for someone who dabbles in multiple Frameworks.

Inevitably, though, all Tiers from all Frameworks are available, and high level characters can really take any power they want.

On top of your attack, defense, support, and utility powers there are also...

Travel Powers
Champions-Travel.jpg

These deserve a special mention, because unlike many other MMORPGs Champions Online does not make achieving a method of swift travel around zones into a chore or something you have to earn towards the end of the game.

Travel powers in Champions Online become available at level 5. To give you a sense of perspective, just finishing the tutorial of the game leaves you at level 5-7. So, your character can fly, teleport, swing, or whatever the case may be more or less right from the beginning of their career, no waiting till level 14 or 40.

PVP
Champions-Duels.jpg

In Champions Online, you are super-heroes. Super-villains are not, at this time, playable (although see the Nemesis system later for a bit on that).

But, the game still does feature PVP. There are duels (as depicted above) which you can do at any time, any where, with consenting parties.

There is also the Hero Games, a sort of in-universe professional fighting league for superhumans, which features multi-hero bouts and even cage matches.

Champions-HeroGames.jpg

Finally, a rather unique feature of Champions Online is the...

Nemesis System
Champions-Nemesis.jpg

In Champions Online, high level heroes have more concerns than villain groups like VIPER or the machinations of Doctor Destroyer.

As you advance in the game, you eventually get the opportunity to create your own Nemesis, a foil and opponent for your hero who will have an entire series of story arcs tailored just for you. You design your Nemesis using the same extremely versatile and creative character design tools available to player characters, and set aspects of their personality and powers for the game to use to generate missions for you.

Your Nemesis will ambush you, send their minions after you, and engage in diabolical plots you will have to stop. You can recruit friends to help you fight your Nemesis, but beware... they may have Nemeses of their own!

Hopefully, all of this has highlighted some of the exciting ways Champions Online is bringing a new and different MMORPG to the table, and I hope to see you all in Millennium City!

    Here's the guide someone made:

    Or not.

    Here's a stolen guide:
    INTRODUCTION
Well it appears the NDA is gone!

While there are many better and more detailed guides than this one, my goal is to create a very simple and easy to follow reference guide for the types of things I wanted to know most when I first got in the game. Please let me know if you find anything that is inaccurate or not easy to follow.

I can only claim direct credit for a small part of the following. The credit for the majority of this information goes to beta pioneers like Lohr and Ravenlute. Thanks! Please note that much of this information may change before or even after release.

    STATISTICS
Strength - Knockback, Knockback Resistance, Picking stuff up, Throwing stuff.
Dexterity - Chance to crit, amount of damage avoided when you successfully Dodge.
Constitution - Hit Points, Hit Point recovery.
Intellect - Reduces the cost of all powers, Stealth detection, Pet DPS.
Ego - Crit Severity, Strength of Hold effects, ability to free yourself from some Holds.
Presence - Threat Scaling more in Offensive role, less in Defensive Role, stuff for buff powers and Pet HP.
Recovery - Equilibrium, Energy generated by your fighting attacks.
Endurance - Energy max, Energy generated by your fighting attacks.

So i've only played a few hours total, level 12 or so, but the game stands out for being fun and not trying to fuck you over by giving you your fun powers at high levels.

Transportation at level 5 was probably the biggest reason i stayed with it as long as i have, Teleport is just so much fun.

90% chance i'll be buying the game at launch, im really having fun with OB even while playing a melee hero.

One of the reasons that they changed exp is that while you may have been leveling well up to level 20 or so, that is when things took a split and stopped matching up.

They are aware that things are out of sync right now, and have posted that the exp changes were a test.

    http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?p=782551

The numbers will change again before launch.

While things will not be as fast as they were before, can everyone please stop shitting their pants about it?

So, not only did my post get almost bottom paged, it got bottom thread'd

    So without further ado

I'm Gonna preorder today for the headstart code. Will that be the same as my beta code, or do I need to do the secret handshake thing or whatever and ask the counter jockey to grab me the early access code too?

Should I just DL from gamestop's website like Pony said, even though im American?

Just a heads up, but since you can auto-level to fourty, you can do the crisis at Lemuria and Monster Isle events, too, and presumably explore those zones if they're in. I noticed the quests near the auto-leveler guy.

Also, I was wondering if anyone had any clue as to how you get the perk's in this event, for live.

Preordered this on Friday Night at Gamestop...imbeciles.
My wife goes up to the counter and asks for the Champions online preorder. The shim says they don't have any. The other guy working says "yeah we do. Got a couple in recently."

When we get up to pay for them, I ask what the bonuses are for getting the preorder with them. She says "you get to be in the Beta". I tell her there are some in game things you get. "Nope...just the beta and early start." "If I ask again, will you tell me the 3rd thing we get?"

    Seriously.

Neither Best Buy, or Wal Mart, had any preorders. And I won't get into the idiot I talked to on the phone at BB.

What time tonight does the End of Beta event start? End?
When do they shut down the servers?

I had more fun playing today, it was cool getting to try new powers. This game has an incredibly slow start though, both the tutorial and the desert are mind bendingly tedious. Once I got a few ranks of flight and got to MC it was better. The character building is too complex for me right now to be honest but maybe I'll get used to it.

i dunno if enrage makes you bigger.

I used Miniturization Device from the Gadeteering Tree, with the Reciprocating device. This makes the enemy you hit small, and makes you big (while debuffing them and buffing yourself).

I made the tallest person possible, and then you basically use the skill twice in a row. The easy way is to use this skill, then nanomachines (helps resets cooldowns) then use the skill again before the buff wears off, thus shrinking them twice, and making you larger again.

City Hall, then up two streets, to the right. You will also see the meuseum with it's giant gold rocket and something else; it's up one street and to the left of that. NE of city hall, NW of meuseum. It's a tiny ass police station, smaller than the buildings around it.

Yea those were a surprise the first time. After that, I found that if you just make short flights, or fly max speed, I could usually get wherever I needed, and when I landed I would immediately hold block as they were always incoming.

I also destroyed them every time I passed by one. Just for a bit of revenge.

See, I thought I had them all figured out like that too.

I got the quest to go over to that area, to get the supplies. I fly over, hear the rockets coming for me, land and block.

I get hit with 3 missiles for not too much damage since I was blocking, and the 'rocket' sound they make went away so I continued on, getting into combat with some dudes.

Then suddenly I see explosions and I'm dead.

What the fuck, rockets. What the fuck.

    Nicely done, Wren.

Question: For those of us in the early start, do we just use this same client, or will another one be up for download? Curious.

Another q: Did anyone ever actually need to group up to do missions? Granted, I only got to about level 13 with my top toon, but I seemed to be able to fly right through missions that were suggested to be tackled with teammates. (Granted, my Telepath was an AoE monster, but still)

So... trying to figure out my first character for when this bad-boy opens up live (and, yeah, I'm one of the suckers who plopped down $200... so, Akinos, make sure you tell your bosses I did it in large part to witnessing your helpfulness and that I said you should get a bonus and if they don't give it to you, I'll be one mad Marine), and I'm at an impasse

I'm probably going to make a riff of Koschei the Immortal (Кощей -- Slavic mythology version, not Hellboy), and I'm not sure if I want to make him Might or Supernatural. Might probably works better, especially with the growth power, but Supernatural has some great "I'm going to hell and bringing you with me" features.

Either that, or Herman the German, saved at the last minute from a Chatti assassin by a freak wormhole created by the LHC. Now wondering through Millenium City as a pissed off guy with a sword and a ridiculous moustache.

I think those in the beta will probably just be able to download a patch and use the same client for early start and release. At least, that's how most MMOs do it these days.

As for teaming, I've had to do so for a few missions... like Witchcraft's sister. Guys like Ferd also require a team depending on your build and the raw luck of how many radiation zombies he summons / you manage to aggro.

On an unrelated note, the 'ice flight' power steers like a goddamn brick.
