In 1971, President Nixon proposed a national health insurance plan built on heavily employer private coverage. Senator Ted Kennedy proposed what would today be called a single-payer plan. In 1974, the debate had morphed into Nixon vs. Kennedy-Mills vs. Organized labor. Despite the prediction in the second clip shown, the result was stalemate rather than passage in 1974 or 1975.

Of the 85% within reach, how many are on a government program already?
Our system is equally fucked. As a payer into the system, you should be equally pissed that your rates keep going up and up to cover the people who don't have insurance while millionaires make talking points in the press about should there be socialism and the government fucking it up for you vs should we let private companies fuck us.

Yes, one of the main problems is that the cost of health care premiums, etc. is going up more than wages, so you're paying more of a percent of your income for health care every year.

I agree the system is flawed but I disagree that single-payer is the solution for us. I would rather see market-based solutions like increasing competition among insurers rather than letting states build monopolies within their lines for huge companies. I can get a loan and buy a car out of state but I can't get insurance out of state. It's fucking stupid.
Only days before, Kennedy had left the scene of a fatal car crash on the small island of Chappaquiddick on Martha's Vineyard, taking the life of 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne.
The second-term senator waited nearly 10 hours to report the accident and offered virtually no explanation other than he "panicked."
On the other hand, a man in a position of power within the federal government who held the same positions as me on a number of issues just died.
Mixed feelings, you see.
Don't worry I am sure there are still plenty of politicians out there that hold similar positions as you and I'll bet a decent percentage of them have never killed anyone.

Well, it is Washington.

Kennedy got away with what he did more for being a Kennedy than anything else. They are or were the closest thing to a royal family we've ever had in this country.

The system favouring rich white folk is a problem you say?

So, anyone else hear about how birthers now want to see Obama's dong because if he was born in 'Merica he would be cut (standard practice at the time of his birth or some shit) and if he still has his sheath he's a secret muslin Kenyan sleeper agent? I bet Teddy knew the answer, and that's why they killed him.
uh
uh
do these people realize that muslims practice circumcision?
it basically proves nothing
these are not rational people
these are Americans
Conspiracy theorists of every nationality are incapable of rationality.

Hey now, OJ and Stallworth got away with killing people too and Charles Barkley has yet to be tried for the death of millions in the aftermath of the Chaos Dunk.

Just like the Bush family right?
That would be a fair assessment yes though the Bush's never had the level of media adoration the Kennedy's did.

Which is unfair, expensive, and out of reach. Good analogy.

I don't know but I doubt it's that much.

If it can't be 100% perfect then there is no sense in trying.
Even in that 85%, there are people who are technically insured, but their coverage is way below what it should be, due to outrageous premiums.

manslaughter, no child left behind(of which many are to blame), voted against the vitter amendment, energy issues, etc.
Which Vitter amendment?
