Man, people weren't kidding when they said this game is hard to get into. It's so much fun getting one shotted by anyone wearing plate armour.
Yeah, I died a lot last night. I'm taking my lumps, though. I figure if I keep at it, I'll get better. That rare moment where I turn someone's face into a mess of wood and blood with a well-placed arrow is incredibly satisfying.

I did pretty horribly until I started using crossbows, then I only did kinda bad.
I've been using the mouse method, but it feels kinda awkward as I'm also turning at the same time when trying to pick an attack/block direction. This is especially goofy when I'm on horseback and my character starts doing all kinds of crazy contortions.
I can't quite seem to get melee combat to feel 'right' for me... I do okay, but it always seems like I'm struggling with the controls to get an attack to go where I want it. Maybe I should try switching it to keyboard and see if that works better for me.
I wonder how you get some of these Steam achievements for Warband to trigger. I've been pretty much playing only mods, yet no Community Service achievement.

Yeah, I don't know if I want to add a level grind to learning how to be decent fighter online.
Yeah, I'm torn on it. I like the idea of having some character progression, but on the other hand I don't like the imbalance it'll create.
On the surface it really does seem like "worst idea ever" material.
Adding an MMO-ish grind to the game, and making it so that newbies are easily slaughtered by heavily armed & armored veterans...that's always a recipe for failure.
Can someone with some time in the mod explain how it's not as bad as it sounds?
Also thanks re: the responses on blocking. I know I have a ton of learning to do just from playing offline; figured I should start with a control method and get familiar with it.
So, I just spent about an hour playing cRPG. It's awful. I'm sure it's pretty cool when you're high level and can take on 4 guys at once, but it's basically the opposite of fun when you're one of those 4 guys getting slaughtered simply because you have shit gear and stats. I'll be staying away from this mod from here on out.

I just tried my first online Warband matches. Boy, that's what it feels like to be a total noob at something. I'd forgotten that feeling. Last time I felt it was when I first started playing Eve Online. I can tell I'm looking at a learning curve here. I haven't played enough yet to be able to tell if it's an intimidating one or not, but damn I haven't felt this ineffective at a game in a loooong time.
What's generally accepted to be the better method of control for blocking - mouse or movement based?
you want to use mouse blocking/attacking.
Anything else will lead to undesirable situation where you cant block a direction because of how the developers imlemented manual blocking my movement.
Example:
If you hold Forward, and then press Left (while not releasing forward), then press block you will block to the left. In order to block up at this point you must release and repress forward to block up. Blocking by movement forces you to move into attacks, even if its briefly, which absolutely is not desireable. In addition when you want to get closer to an opponent who is constantly trusting, and throwing the occasional overhead attack having to constantly press your 'back' key is definatly not desireable.
Just use mouse, in the long run you will be better for it.
Also dont play crpg, there are better grinding games out there to play, the skill ceiling in this game is so increadibly high you dont need artificial numbers holding you back.
Okay Im aboot to get this eagle and radiant cross mod to see what the deal is. I never played it in the original game.
But I really want to try out that Napoleonic multiplayer mod. That looks like something I could get in to.
Also I never really got CRPG. It's like the only people that are going to enjoy it are the ones that are there when the server starts because then they get to lord over everyone else.
Can we make individual crpg characters to play only on the server? I mean, I like the idea of it, but it sounds disheartening with how weak you are in comparison to higher levels, with no way to play against other players your level without constantly joining and leaving servers until you find one that works for you.
Hmm, maybe by the time I've practiced enough to work up the courage to play online we'll have resolved this brewing pro/anti-crpg civil war.
I would recommend playing a little offline to get used to the game, but I've been playing this game since 2006 and pretty much got destroyed in my first multiplayer game last night. Playing against humans is definitely a different beast, and I'm going to have to adjust how I play for it.

I tried out cRPG and agree with the sentiment about it being a huge, unnecessary grind. Not gonna waste any more time with it. Their strategus thing is neat in concept, but again, it is not a grind I'm particularly interested in. If I wanted territorial control pvp stuff that badly I'd rather play Darkfall again, and that's saying a lot.
Normal multiplayer is plenty fun, our 10 on 10 matches last night were really good. Once we get more than one person going 38-0 (or just do massively reduced spawn times) they'll be even better.
yeah um. my game keeps crashing. pretty much every time i play a singleplayer session it will end in a crash. the crashes are completely random. i've had a crash to desktop for mounting my horse, for trying to enter a town, and for trying to leave a town.
4 kills, 17 deaths. Managed to work up enough gold to get me gear a step above "might as well be naked peasant" but haven't played again since.
It's very harsh, and to be honest the fact that most of your newbie money is gotten through simply leeching off mass melee battles while maybe stealing a kill or something is a bit of a turn-off.
I find it oddly enjoyable, though. Granted, I've been playing MMOs for thirteen years, so I may be just used to it.

So good. The expanded tactical options alone are worth it.

You have to know the weapon ahead of time. Best bet is to ask on a crpg server. Or, google it with some google-fu.
Multi is separate.
Steam Support is the worst. Seriously, the worst
As far as I'm aware, the only polearms usable with a shield are things like spears (including pitchforks), most lances, and staves.

I remember from M&B original a couple which could be used with a shield for poking only, but they were rare. And I could be completely wrong here.

I think I'll try some singleplayer to get the hang of things.
Come on steam, I want to play!
I think mouse is probably a little better since you can move independently of it, but it's really personal preference.

There was a decent amount on about 8:30 central last night. I'll probably play for a little while around 7 or 8 central tonight.

I can see it now.
Spearhead a heroic assault on a castle.
Mowing down opposing men-at-arms with each swing of your mighty polearm.
Leaving a bloody wake as you lead your comrades to the keep of the enemy fortress.
Die to a lucky crossbow bolt.
BAM. Autobalanced to the last handful of dispirited defenders just as they're overrun.
"Thou hath failed!"
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-...
Nah seriously autobalance sounds like it might not be a bad idea.
It's been a long time since I've played TF2, so I may be getting it wrong. If I recall correctly, the game forced balance when you chose teams.
It does.
It also compensates for imbalances which develop during the course of the game by switching people suddenly to the other team upon death.
