[D&D 4E] Recruit On! The Tariff of Relkingham

edited August 2009 in Critical Failures
I have had a player decide to bow out of my current adventure, so I am in need of a replacement.

The party currently consists of:
Stormwind - Reed Trueheart, Halfling Rogue
Omega2112 - Vengar Lightbringer, Human Paladin/Cleric of Bahamut
Jebu - Yaneth Kantar, Drow Invoker of Corellon
Hayasa - Chaffie Barnstone, Human Warden
Saurgang - Raad Amantahd, Dragonborn Warlord

I'm looking for a striker to replace the Avenger that is departing (doesn't necessarily mean you should submit an Avenger, though). The adventure is at stopping point currently; I'll decide once I pick the replacement how you will be introduced to the group. From here on out, we're off the rails as the content will be generated by yours truly (a PA PbP first for me!).

Character Creation and Other Information:
Character concepts should be posted here. Your character is 9th level, but he/she follows the item/equipment rules below. Stat generation is 22 Point Buy, as outlined in the Player's Handbook. This is not first-come, first-serve. I will take concepts until 12 p.m. CST on Saturday, August 29th. Please post 1 character concept only!

Notable items:

-- All currently published classes and races in all official printed and DDI WOTC (including Monks and all Monster Races) with the following exceptions:

*Hybrid Classes are not permitted.

*Adventurer's Vault 2 material is not acceptable, as I don't have the supplement.

-- Starting equipment is one Level 9 item, one Level 8 item, one Level 7 item, and a Level 7 item's worth of gold. Any questions about this; send me a PM. I’m going to go ahead and ban Cloaks of Distortion, as I find them annoying, especially in the PbP format.

--Backgrounds from the PHBII are fine.

--Special note: I'm not a big fan of rangers. If you can wow me with your application, you might have a shot. Just be warned I'm inclined to dismiss them.

The Specifics:

This is a PbP game. I am your DM. Sheets are on myth-weavers. Dice rolls are on invisiblecastle. For now, this is a combined OOC/IC thread. Post OOC discussions/comments/questions/etc in spoilers to avoid clutter and confusion. If it ends up being a hassle, I'll go ahead and split this into two threads, but I think this will help keep the game moving (plus it’s easier for me to only keep track of one thread).

I expect each of you to post at least once a day (except on weekends) when you're able. If you'll be away for an extended period of time, let me know so that I can make arrangements to keep the game moving while you're gone (or postpone it if the majority of the party is unavailable). I'm a reasonable person, and I won't kick you out for missing posts here and there. That being said, if you flake consistently you'll be removed from the party.

I've got it now, but I want to be fair to the party that's currently playing, since I didn't have those books/DDI when we started the game.

As some of my players have contacted me about this, most of the book restrictions have been lifted in the OP.

How much DDi stuff is OK? Specifically, there was a Dragon article this week about followers of Bahamut and since we're lv 9 and presumably headingtoward paragon level, the PP in there seemed kinda neat to try out.

Basically I want to create the legendary St George as an avenger of Bahamut.

Big-ass axe is better, for starters; with double rolls you can use a +2 proficiency weapon instead of a +3 one. And then you get that tasty brutal 2.

Avengers can have more AC than Defenders =P

    Mazrim Stormcloud, Human, Sorcerer

Born in the barrier islands during the worst storm in a century, his entire village was wiped out and only by sheer luck was he found clutched in his mothers dying arms by a passing merchant vessel days after. The captain took the boy as his own and named him Mazrim Stormcloud.

Growing up on a boat the boy found he had a talent with the winds that helped his adoptive father travel farther and faster than any other vessel could. Wealth and power came to the merchant and the boy due to his talent, but it also brought jealousy.

On his 13th name day pirates raided the ship in the night killing all aboard, but when they found Mazrim they were ill prepared for the boy’s wrath. Seeing his adoptive father die trying to save him Mazrim summoned a storm that is still talked about today. Standing in the center of that typhoon Mazrim's fury raged for a night and a day until there was nothing but devastation left.

13 years have passed since that event and Mazrim finds himself on the edge of another adventure.

    Random, Tiefling Dark Pact Warlock

    Background
Random was kidnapped as a young child by a cult of tiefling abducting followers of the Dark who sought to use their tiefling affinity to demons to further their aims. She was brought up following the crdeo of Darkness : unseen, unheard, unfelt. She and othe younglings were set to various tasks and studies aimed at purging any conscience they might have and at acquiring power through and for them. Theft, summonings, sacrifices, communions with evil forces. As she grew older, however, Random began to feel less and less comfortable with the inherent evilness of her "family". When she refused an order, the ranking members of the cult took exception to it and tried to kill her. When she left, the "deacon" and his two guards were most definitely dead. She escaped and ran for a long time, finally reaching a land where she thinks the cult's influence does not reach. Now she is set adrift with no purpose, her moral compass askew and pacts with dark forces still in effect.

    Thalai, Goliath Barbarian

    Appearance

You look up. WAY up. The Goliath who stands before you looks to be nothing short of a mountainous 7'8", and the sword strapped to her back seems to be something that a giant might use as a weapon without a moments notice. An amulet is strapped close to her neck, and right beside that is the symbol of The Raven Queen swinging lightly on a chain. Her blueish gray skin is speckled with black streaks that seem to compliment her black, braided hair. Green eyes stare down at you as she passes you, her sinewy muscles seamlessly moving beneath her skin. As she fades into darkness farther down the road, her body, a mass of muscles more likely to be seen on a runner than a body builder, seems to disappear. You shake your head and continue on your journey.

    Personality and Mannerisms

Far from being the typical Barbarian bodybuilding brute, Thalai is a runner and a thinker through and through. When she talks, her quiet speech is peppered with terms she has picked up from both the military histories as well as the many plays, speeches, and theological works that she has read. Many people mistake her quiet nature to be some form of shyness, a thought they usually release once they spent even a few minutes in her company.

Thalai is always looking for the next opportunity in life to come around, and it is clear to those she talks to for more than a few minutes that she has aspirations for something greater than just hitting things hard with a sword. When she isn't required to pay attention (and even sometimes when she is) she will have her nose buried in a book.

    Backround

Between Goliath communities, there are very few ways to get messages around. Typical post service won't work due to the nomadic nature of the tribes, and very few birds have enough brains and strength to carry large messages as well as figure out where any specific tribe has moved to, let alone remember where every tribe has moved to. This is where Goliath runners come in.

Each group of Goliath Runners is stationed in one of the few permanent Goliath communities. Whenever a Goliath wants to send a message, they merely send their letter via bird to the nearest community. A Runner then takes over. They run, weave, track, and fight their way from tribe to tribe, eventually tracking down and delivering whatever piece of mail or items they were tasked to.

Ever since Thalai was a small Goliath, she knew that being a Runner was what she wanted to do. To be able to run at top speeds, leap from ledge to ledge, track your way from camp to camp, and then make it all the way back in one piece was the height of excitement and daring. So, at the ripe old age of 16, Thalai joined the Runners.

For 8 years, Thalai has slowly raised through the ranks of the Runners, eventually becoming the leader of a small group of Runners. She would of happily stayed in that position for the rest of eternity if it weren't for an accident that broke her shin. After being told that a person could only run for short distances or else their leg bones would break would probably send most runners into a depressed fit. Not Thalai, though. For the last two years she has been training with the blade and with her damaged leg, attempting to make a transition from runner to adventurer. Now, finally, she believes that she's ready to do more than odd jobs and small clean up jobs.

Georgh, Dragonborn Avenger of Bahamut, sworn protector of Law and Good, Destroyer of Evil and Righter of Wrongs (Stop clearing your throat! It's pronounced George dammit! Everyone gets that wrong... *sigh*).

    Appearance
Georgh is tall, even for a Dragonborn, but not as heavily muscled as most, preferring to trust in his Divine Master's boons for both protection and strength at arms. His only concession to material protection is the battle harness he retrieved from the hoard of a younger white dragon and its Kobold servants, an item which he favours more for keeping his halberd ready to hand than the protection it provides.
    Personality and mannerisms
Georgh is a fervent believer in Bahamut and his ideals. Though he accepts that some people worship deities that are not Bahamut, he is generally at a loss to know why, for Bahamut is the Perfect Dragon and he will definitely let you know if you can't distract him in time. The best distractions are, of course, the sworn enemies of Bahamut (the misguided fools!) but a bag full of toffee cherries will do in an emergency. Tends toward the bombastic rather than pretentious, but would much prefer to be chopping people in half as he finds an almost meditative calm in the midst of battle.
    Background
Hatched from an egg marked with a dragon's head, Georgh's parents gave him over to their town's religious school after he showed a profound faith at an early age. Though they were sad to see him go, they knew he would have a longer and generally better-appointed life as a priest than as a blacksmith or a leather-worker. Of course, once he entered cloistered training, they were unable to keep in regular contact with him, so they never discovered that their little Georgh had shown the particular blend of fervency and clarity that the priests of the order looked for in their Avengers, nor that he had acepted their ofer and taken up the mantle of a wandering warrior...

    Pellinore Bleakmore, Half Elf Warlock

    Appearance & Mannerisms
A dusty and worn travel's cloak contains a thin, well dressed man in his mid thirties. Without the cloak, his appearance would be more of a man about to ascend to the lectern in a university classroom than a man about to descend into a gnoll infested cavern; with the singular exception of a handkerchief, which is just as worn as the cloak, protruding from his suitjacket. His face is pale and cleanshaven, but with the hint of developing sunburn on the brow. Those who catch a glimpse of the interior of the aforementioned cloak can see assorted pouches sewn into the lining. Their contents? unknown.....
Has a book imp as a familiar. The imp speaks Infernal in a smoky, guttural voice. Bleakmore responds to its comments in Infernal, but his tone is glib and dismissive, and lacks the inherent sense of "threat" the language usually conveys.

    Personality
"Peculiar" is the first word that most often comes to mind when describing Mr. Bleakmore. He has an unflappable demeanor, responding to danger with a sort of stoic bemusement rather than fright or panic. While this is preferable to losing one's head, it can be very vexing for his traveling companions, who (if they are the sort inclined to do so) feel obligated to shepherd the obviously over his head fellow to safety. But if he was really so incapable, how has he been managing to survive when he strikes off on his own (as he is wont to do)?
Bleakmore is cordial, though not especially outgoing. His greetings and farewells are short but sincere, and though not given to length conversation (expect on subjects in which he is academically trained), he will occasionally, without prompting, offer up tidbits of information (usually related to the subject at hand).

    Background
I've got the basic outline for this, but I'm holding off on posting it in case the DM already has plans on how to introduce the replacement into the party.

Again, it was a tough decision, but Farashiel will be replaced by Georgh, Dragonborn Avenger of Bahamut.

Thanks again to everyone who applied; if I could handle a 10 man party, I totally would. However, I might go insane. :)
