Well at least out of all of this I kept my good hat, and didn't get that halo

It looks ugly to you because you are a evil cheaty McCheatster who can not gaze upon its radiant glory

So I used the idler. I lost the only hat I got from it which was a shitty hat for my least played class, and I lost most of the weapons I had for classes I rarely play but I'll be getting them back anyway because I have all the milestones.

So yes, be smug about your happy meal prize. I'll be happy to shoot it off your head so you can get a nice look at my hats that aren't dumb

They could have made that statement months ago if they viewed the idler in such a negative light that they would do something about it is what irks a lot of people I think. And without changing the system, all this does is cause idling to drain more power. Why do you hate the environment valve???!!!

For those saying it is cheating.

Can you tell me how it is any different then actually idling in game? I don't think Valve deleted items from those people.

Other then allowing me to do something else.

Because you are using a 3rd party program to access to TF2.

    To quote the blog:
We realize there is a high level of demand for items, and we're still working on systems to allow you to find them in new ways (via Trading, and crafting duplicates into desired items). However, we need to draw the line at running external applications.

Oh, whoops. I didn't know we had access to a blog post before it was written. Also note how it says "need to draw the line" they didn't draw the line before, and we had no idea it was "cheating" before.

I don't care that much about hats or weapons(I'm in the same boat who deleted the "fairly" won items, think they were duplicates)

But I hardly think it was cheating. I blame Valve for having a system that people who didn't want to deal with bullshit, went and circumvented it.

It's also funny that the guy who made the idler got a community item for other work.
Okay, one, third party software to attain items in the game should be a pretty huge tip off if you have any common sense. Then again, if you did, you'd be able to step back and go "Oh wait yeah this is fair I guess, even if it sucks".

Second, he didn't get a community item.

Basically, that was an easy out because TF2 doesn't actually have terms of service or an EULA. Steam, itself, does have a policy on this, but the large number of people using the idler made that a rather unpalitable option. In other words, you should have read up on the SSA and did a little digging into the random program that you downloaded off the interwebs before running it through your steam account.

Dispatch from the Department of Organization:

Upon further consideration, it has been decided that the Cheater's Lament, as a special case, does not qualify as a hat for the purpose of determining whether an individual may qualify for Clan Hatless. The sole determining factor for membership in Clan Hatless has always been that the player must never have been offered a hat by the random drop system. As the Cheater's Lament was inserted into players' inventories using a different mechanism, possessing it does not violate that cardinal rule. Therefore, Clan Hatless will remain in operation, and members of Clan Hatless may freely display the Cheater's Lament if they so wish (and are able).

They can have my hat and items. I use the vanilla starters and server hat mods make the actual items even more pointless.

I think what's getting to me is the other players. The professional trolls and jackasses who like to taunt and come off as better. I like to play games for fun, ya know, like a game is made to be. Which is why I usually have such a hard time playing online. Don't give the other players fuel for being an asshole.

What unfair advantage does it give an idler to have them then? Why does trying for them deserve punishment?

Also I did the same thing as crash where I deleted items that I got without idling because of duplicates from the idler. So now I get those items taken away when all I wanted was a useless fucking hat. Even if i get some items back from achievements that doesn't help the ones I got the legit way of playing and getting random items.

    UGH. FUCK YOU VALVE

Clearly they weren't useless enough that you had to use an idler to try get a hat that does nothing.

I find it funny that people who "legitimately" idle weren't punished. Did I cheat? Eh, I'd view it as sort of a gray area considering there is such a thing as "legitimate" idling. I used a program that allowed me to do the same thing as "legitimate" idlers without wasting a shit ton of CPU time. If Valve did the same thing to people who just idled in achievement_idler or the like, I'd fully admit that "Yes, I was cheating."

In my opinion, here's what Valve should have done. In the last patch, include a message that says something along the lines of "Valve does not support third-party applications used to obtain items, such as the idler. Please stop using it." From that point on, if you use it, then you get punished. If you don't, good for you. You listened.

Furthermore, I think Valve really should revisit their random item scheme. I wouldn't have used the idler if there was another way to obtain hats other than through sheer luck. If you were rewarded with a hat for obtaining all the achievements in a class, I would have done that instead. The only reason I started using the idler was because I got all the items through achievements, had shitty luck getting the hats through randomness (I've run across several people who have several hats and play less than me and I have zero hats) and I wanted to try to get them.

With regards to hats, I think:
    A) There should be a way to obtain them through achievements or the like.
    B) The item system should be retweaked to reward game play rather than simply time spent in the game. Perhaps something along the lines of increasing the random chance that you get an item based on your score or somethinglike that.

Their problem was not with idling, all idling is 'legitimate' in that there is no punishment for doing it.

Valve have objected to people using a 3rd party program to acces their game, and punished as they saw fit.
