Heheh. Come back from a night out to see that most of my items are gone! Still, it's not like you ran the program thinking "This is the good 'onest way of gettin' hats". Now I am hatless but my 8 year old brother has his first little hat. He doesn't know what hats are I bet. He'll be chuffed. Hahah.

Still a bit annoying that the medic achievement items are gone, but they'll be back soon? So it's all good really. It's a bit silly to complain about it, isn't it? Yes. Yes I think so.

Oh man. Really? I didn't expect all this nerd rage over losing items and sudden surge of people up on their high horse. I mean it doesn't surprise me that much, but still.

And I swore I deleted all the items I'd gotten from the idler. Ah well, I still got all my unlocks. And my crappy ass hat.

I'm still not sure why things like the unlocker or the idler were able to work to work in the first place. I sure as hell can't open a random exe and have it tell the WoW server "hey, this guy has a bunch of epics now and is farming gold at x rate as we speak."

It doesn't do anything like that, it tells the Valve servers "I am a TF2 server and I have all these people connected to me."

Meanwhile, everyone who took the moral high road will soon be finding a new hat in their inventory. We've also significantly increased the chance of finding any of the existing hats.

Am I reading this right? Are they going to significantly increase the chance that the non-idlers will get hats?

I've never achievement farmed. I've fooled around on some PA servers waiting for people to join/play serious, but I've never joined an achievement farming server and I agree the achievement unlocker program is outright cheating and unsporting.

I do not agree that the idler program was cheating; it's a legit program. It saves a modicum of effort of joining a game and joining an idle server in order to: save power/CPU cycles/memory, keep TF2 from bugging out going from windowed mode to full screen, ensure that the idle server being used is set up correctly and works, let your friends know at a glance who was idling by the special message in the server info and only taking up one slot on the server list for your friends, and form real data about item and hat drops.

The last point's kind of ironic. The low probability of getting a hat, divined largely by the idling program itself thanks to the giant amount of data, surely enticed some people to use the program.

And I'm sure some of you remember me asking "how much time is left" and "what points are capped" whenever my HUD bugged out from the windowed mode. THAT is why I switched from regular idling to the program, because I was sick of having to exit TF2, restart TF2, and by the time I get back I'm stuck without a spot on the server. Else I'm a burden to my team.

I fail to see the distinction between the action of idling with the program and idling within TF2, and I certainly fail to see how this makes 4.5% of us "cheaters". I'm more than willing to play within the rules, but rules, as a rule, are clear and concise.

Also, you might want to remove the gametracker links in the OP because it uses an external application to start TF2.

to be fair, the idler program uses methods that aren't unlike trainers such as aimbots, wallhacks, esp, stuff of that nature. it probably hooks memory, does some naughty things with dll's, etc

so, in essence what valve is saying, even though the things it did weren't bad, how it did it was far too close to hacking to be allowed

it's basically like a girl breaking up with you not because what you said, but how you said it

my main gripe is them calling not idling the moral high ground

it was nothing fucking moral or anything

people who idled just wanted to have the content that a large part of the last two updates was without it just being a one in a billion chance

plus, as others have said, it was just basically achievement_idler without running your gpu heat up and you could work on actual... work while it ran

    blerugh
Welcome to Valve being butthurt because their whole item system has been a terrible joke from day one and they can't admit it to themselves

Considering you were asking why you couldn't do the same thing in WoW, a game that has no legal user-run servers, I'm going to assume you don't know a lot about how computers work.

Basically, easier said than done, otherwise there'd be no more hacking. Ever.

If this actually works, maybe I should email them about the update for the 360 version and whether or not I should put it in my will that it is bought and dl-ed regardless of my state of being.
