Damn, is it me or are those Ferngully songs are filled with innuendo? Also, I never knew Tim Curry had such a great singing voice.

    Dr. Frankenfurter.

Though I don't think I can post the videos ...

I have high high hopes that Princess and the Frogs goes back to the classic formula.

Agreed. I like how they are going back to the animation that doesn't reek of 3d video game models, and how it appears they are shooting for more of a fairy tale feel. We'll see.

Awesome thread. I'm a huge, huge, huge Disney nut.

OP nailed it - Be Prepared is possibly the best song in a movie that was full of quality songs.

Somebody tell me why Disney can't quite seem to recapture the formula for making classics again? It had fallen by the wayside for years, then they brought it back with Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, the Lion King, etc.

    Now...?

To be fair, Up! was the best in some time. Now sure it has that same lasting appeal, though.

That was Pixar, which has been the sole deliverer of quality movies for quite awhile now. Disney is too busy not doing animation and instead focusing on tween soap opera sitcoms. Hopefully that'll change somewhat soon, but c'est la vie.

It's hard to find the original (racist or at least culturally ignorant) version of "Arabian Nights."

You mean the one with the "they cut your hand off, but hey, it's home" line?

"where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face, it's barbaric, but hey, it's home!"

I never understood how the change got through. Wouldn't the offensive part have been calling Arabia "barbaric"? Yet that's the lyric that stayed. There's also a line in "Prince Ali" that talks about how his slaves are happy to be well, his slaves. How'd that get through?

I understand, and don't get me wrong - Pixar stuff is excellent, by and large. Outside of Toy Story, though, I just don't see one that really screams "classic movie for the years" like Disney once did. I don't begrudge Disney their Miley Cirus and Jonas Brothers of the world, as long as they continue to put out top-notch feature films.

Listening to it just now, it just dawned on me how silly the rest of the movie is after this song. He has a huge army of highly disciplined hyenas at his disposal, and brags about the "fine planning" of his "coup of the century". And what's his plan? To send Simba and his dad into a ravine then send a stampede their way. Pretty much the jungle equivalent of shoving someone into traffic. That's his complex, well-planned coup. And how many hyenas out of his countless army does he use to execute this plan? Three. The three stupidest ones, who actually manage to screw it up.

The hyenas were cowards though - they wouldn't have attacked Mufasa outright no matter how many there were. Plus if they had been involved, he wouldn't have been able to bring them out in the open when he took power.

We all know that Anastasia is a Disney film and not a 20th Century Fox film.
Edit: Nevermind. the guy said it wasn't.

Rasputin was too much of a joke in that movie for me. On the other hand, I hated the other main characters so rooted for him.

The Lion King one is actually based off of Triumph of The Will

That's because it took major influence from the Triumph of the Will. As soon as Scar climbs to the platform and the spotlights flare up it's totally ripping off Speer's 'cathedral of light.'

The Hyenas are goose-stepping as they keep their eyes on Scar. It's not a vibe, it was an intentional emulation of Nazi parades.

I'm pretty sure that's the intention. It's essentially a camera angle out of Triumph of the Will...just with goose-stepping hyenas instead. I'm surprised that the quality of the German voice actors in the German version of that song...they mimic the intonations of their English counterparts relatively closely (sure Germans have good voice actors relative to lip syncing, but usually the actual voices are terribly matched).
