so i was at a friend's place on friday night and it was after last call, so we were all (about 4 of us) just hanging at his place. all he had alcohol-wise was this stuff called firefly, which i guess is a sweet tea flavored vodka?
long story short, it was some of the worst shit i've ever put into my mouth
i am very much looking forward to the bottle of 18 year old Jameson's Gold Reserve that was just bought for sipping and smoking cigars on the beach next week

Yea, while I know you can't go wrong with that bottle, I nervously await to hear what you and your old man think of it.

i may grab a bottle of Gentleman Jack just in case. Dad was a big Jack drinker back in the day, so he may want to old school it
Whiskey can generally be divided into three groups:
Bourbon
Irish Whiskey
Scotch
We can give you the low cost but not swill versions of all three.

It's..uh..kind of it's own thing. Vaguely Irish Whiskey if forced to group it up.
If you like your basic irish whiskey then go with the entry level Jameson. If you like a little more peppery bite to that, go with Bushmills. If you want smoother notes, go with 12 Year Jameson (but now you're out of entry level stuff).
If you like more of a smokey flavor, stick with a Scotch. Dewars is likely the lowest "not swill" level I would go, Johnny Walker Black is better. Red is better than that (no longer entry level).
Bourbon? Jack Daniel's isn't technically a bourbon, but it's close. Eli Craig or whatever is apparently a decent bourbon (the name was mentioned in this thread not too long ago by Daric). Both are entry level price. Woodbridge also doesn't suck and won't set you back too many bills.
