My friend wants to create an online site for selling T-shirts and other clothing. Which webhosting companies are the best? What should she be looking out for when selecting a company to go with?
I just signed up with simplehost.com today, I really didn't want to pay the year up front but it was one of the better deals at 7.50 a month with free domain, with unlimited storage space and 50 GB of bandwidth
Before you go looking for hosting, you need to know what you need from the hosting. How much disk space, how much bandwidth, what server technologies, geographic location of the majority of your customers vs that of the host (not too terribly important, but something to think about), those sorts of things. From there, you can start looking for hosts that fit those needs. I'd recommend hitting someplace like www.webhostingtalk.com to get reviews of hosts and to get a better idea of what you're looking for. There are also some good articles floating around of questions you should ask prospective hosts, how to select a list, how to narrow that list down, etc etc. Normally, you don't necessarily need to do all of this, but if you're looking to host a company rather than a personal site, these are things you need to consider.
We currently host with A Small Orange, and they have incredible customer service and fast server response times, but they've been having downtime issues with a few of their servers recently, so I'm not going to say "host with them now!" They have been a very good host in the time we've been with them, except for the aforementioned downtime issues.
Tons of bandwidth, more than enough space, powerful control panel.. you have to pay a setup fee unless you go for longer terms, but its still a great deal, I believe..
In addition, their servers come fully loaded. Don't worry about picking features, because they pretty much have everything automatically, really :P
Posting to recommend http://www.dreamhost.com - which I have been very pleased with (currently hosting 4 sites on one package) and which I know friends and family have also appreciated.
Excellent, excellent support and an ethical company to boot. :^:
