Closed captioning isn't working

I have a Toshiba projection TV and a Phillips DVD player. I am attempting to watch Dead Like Me. It does not have subtitles but it has the little [cc] icon on the case. That means it should have closed captioning, right? Closed captioning was enabled on both the television and the DVD player but nothing is coming up. I know the body of knowledge on these forums is darn well near infinite, so does anyone know how to get closed captioning for this DVD to work? (Closed captioning works for when we watch satellite TV.) Thanks!
