This was a huge part of my childhood. This, and Square One. Actually, come to think of it, I almost exclusively watched educational TV when I was a kid, with the exception of Ninja Turtles.

Well, this is certainly a shame indeed. This was probably the defining television of my childhood, and instilled in me (with my parents help) a deep love of reading that I retain to this day and that I credit with helping me to do well in school and thus basically any success I've experienced in life (at least indirectly).
Funny story that my mom likes to tell (I don't really remember this myself, I was very little at the time): One evening, my aunt called my mom and was freaking out; apparently there was this escaped convict or something roaming around, and he had been spotted in her neighborhood, and she couldn't get in touch with my cousins (her children), two young girls at the time. So she wanted her to come over and help look for them and such. So anyway she had to take my sister and I over there with her since I guess my dad was at work or something. Anyway, according to legend, when we got over to my aunt's house, I got out of the car, looked her straight in the eye, and said:
"You made me miss Reading Rainbow, and it was a new one!"
So yea, moral of the story is: RR is more important than the lives of your loved ones.
that's depressing. The loss of the show of course, but moreso the shift in philosophy regarding educational television.
If you learn how to read watching tv then society has larger problems.
Reading Rainbow totally got me wanting to read as a kid.
i agree
honestly, i think kids are less stupid than people give them credit for, and so focusing on the mechanics of reading instead of the joy of it is like focusing on the chemical composition of acrylic paint instead of showing kids artwork and then giving them brushes and telling them to have fun painting stuff
This is a very eloquent description of my position. :^:

Loved this show when I was young. I really miss Square One Television too. I still hum some of the songs from that show when I'm doing math.
Was that the show that had "Mathman" and "Mathnet"?
Of the latter, I recall the episode where they cracked the case because the victim had left a secret message by way of the Fibonacci Sequence.
Also Reading Rainbow made me feel good about being a bookworm as a kid, instead of being looked down upon for being "smart" when I was in school.
I think this is something that contributes to a lack of education in a significant way... kids and adults who don't value education, and/or actively put it down.

The show was Square One, and Mathnet was fucking awesome.
I think I remember another one where they solved the kidnapping (or something... i doubt they were solving murders or anything) of a pianist by looking at his last composition and turning the tones into the corresponding numbers of a telephone.

YES, that was the other show I was trying to remember.
Oh man. Whenever they had those kids that shrunk? I thought that was the coolest thing ever.
And then they had that talking skeleton. Scared the crap out of me anytime he showed up.
I got those mixed up constantly though.
Kudos to RR though. On public television only Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers have/had longer runs.
