Can you recommend a game about corporate intrigue?
I just got a hankerin' for a game about business/unbridled capitalism/corporate intrigue. Maybe a tycoon sort of deal, or anything, really. Anybody have recommendations? Thanks!
The Eve Online recruitment thread is on the first page
Unless you don't play MMO's for whatever reason, it's not going to get any better than this. From Corporate espionage (as in real players, infiltrating corps to spy, steal and sabotage) to brutal competition (competing corps can and will hire mercenaries to wreck your shit by proxy) it doesn't get any more cutthroat. On top of that, the market place in Eve is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in a game. Production chains, research, distribution, logistics, it's all there. I mainly PvPed in my Eve days, but I had an alt character who made money (to support my PvP character) through mining and industry. You can make a good bit of cash just by mining low end minerals and producing loads of cheap Frigates for the Empire markets.

This cutthroat nature is also why he isn't likely to get in. Believe it or not, there's a recommended 1000 post minimum before you're even likely to be considered for a place. I had a look in there once, it's surreal. You've got all these 1 post dudes who signed up just to try and get a place in the PA EVE group, all the while maintaining they've been lurking for years. I even saw two new guys post in the thread trying to validate that they both knew each other in the previous PA EVE group.

does Deus Ex count? It was about rival corporations trying to get rid of one another...
If we're going that route, Syndicate.

It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

the old Genesis Shadowrun game, perhaps? More Deus Ex-y and Perfect Dark-y than out-and-out tycoon capitalistic stuff, but you can get various jobs to work against one corporation or another or go spelunking through their networks for data to (hopefully) sell for a tidy profit.

When did we introduce the 1000 post rule? Regardless, he doesn't have to join merch to play eve.
Civ IV:Colonization is another game that focuses on making cash.

I'll see your Uplink and raise you a Street Hacker. I played Uplink first, but enjoyed Street Hacker much more. It felt more realistic to me and I liked the plot better.
There was a multiplayer Half Life mod called something like Science & Industry, where you infiltrate the other team's company and kidnap their scientists, putting them to work for your company so they can research new kickass guns for you to wipe out the other team.
I know I'm able to run Master of Magic in dosbox on a Vista 64 bit OS machine.
I actually just found my Syndicate Plus CD from the EA Classics series. I dropped it into my DOSgames folder, fired up DOSbox and bang, I had it up and running without any issues. Such an awesome game.
And I'll reiterate that MerchI isn't necessary to enjoy Eve. I was playing Eve before it got big on these forums, and the Alliance I was in was actually hostile towards MerchI. If I ever get back in to Eve (the itch has been particularly strong lately) I doubt I'd join up with MerchI/Goons, since PvP with a heavy dose of RP is my thing. I'd probably either hook up with my old Alliance or one of the Pirate Corps that I have contacts with.
I've been meaning to play back through Deus Ex. Haven't played it in years. Any mods recommended to make it feel like a more modern game?
Dig up the Deus Ex thread. Firstly, the Shifter mod is awesome for fixing up some of the little things about Deus Ex that weren't perfect, and there's also some High Res texture packs lying around. I was actually considering doing a Let's Play of it on Realistic choosing the worst possible skills and augs.
Startopia and Republic are both games that I had great interest in but never got around to playing.
I would actually like to know myself how the hell you can get hold of Startopia.

I just found Startopia on GameTap.
Been having a hell of a time getting GameTap to really work these days, though.
You could sail around europe, build your business, trade meat, wool, wine, build farms, get married, help towns defend against sieges, and battle pirates.

Shit was awesome when I was 11.
Yea, actually. I had a blast with that one when I was younger, too. Great game.

There's also plenty of stealth games that involve some amount of corporate intrigue.

Heck yes
Capitalism
A bit older (ok over a decade) its more of a serious tycoon game. Hope you like spreadsheets!
Startopia
One of the best tycoon games out there. Still looks hot.
Uplink
Doesn't really fit, but certainly gave me a feeling of intrigue. An excellent game.
Republic
More intrigue! Actually, thats all this game has really. Still enjoyable tho.
And yes, Syndicate rocks.
You didn't specify serious, and it IS about being a business mogul.
A dinosaur business mogul.

I've been looking for this game ever since I got my first computer...

I actually do have an EVE Online sub, and you're right, I should be playing that right now.

I'm currently playing through Stalker SOC again with the Stalker Complete 2009 mod. Makes it feel nice a fresh and a little fixed.
How can I get ahold of a version of Syndicate that will work on my Windows 7 pc? Or even an XP PC? I'd love to play that.
Bioshock's a great game, but not what I'm in the mood for.
Capitalism is great, I should play that again.
Startopia and Republic are both games that I had great interest in but never got around to playing.
Man! How do I get a version of DinoPark Tycoon that will run? I loved that game in 3rd grade!
I've played through Lemonade Tycoon too many times already.
Colonization looks like a lot of fun, I just didn't spring for it when it came out. Still not quite what I'm looking for though, I think.
Street Hacker looks really cool. I'll check that out.
Keep em' comin! This is great guys, it's bringing me back.
Seriously, go play Startopia. Its fantastic. Just check out this fanpage

There's research and a whole lot of little micro resourcing things in there.
Also, global domination. With lazers.

I just bought that game yesterday. It is horribly boring but funny for about 5 minutes.
