Surround Headphones or Speakers?

Well my 12 year old Boston speakers died on me today so I picked up a pair of G35 Logitech Headphones. They pretty much cost the same a set of 5.1 speakers. I have not opened them yet. What do you guys use headphones or speakers?

You may want to relocate this to Moe's Technology Tavern, but I had a pair of Zalman 5.1 headphones that provided a real edge when playing Counter-Strike: Source.

Another advantage with headphones is that you can play late at night without waking up your family, although if you have a tendency to yell at the screen after a particularly egregious headshot, they're still gonna come knocking on your door and ask you to please stop shouting at the people on the internet.

So I say: open 'em up.

Well, regular closed headphones are pretty "positional" already.

Indeed they are, it all depends on the game's programming though. Search for "Virtual Haircut" and even the crappiest stereo headphones will sound like a surround system.

Unless I'm trying to be quiet, speakers are the way to go. You tend to get ear fatigue from wearing headphones (unless they're designed to be worn for a long period of time) for more than an hour, and that's the last thing you want when you're involved in a serious gaming session.

I've also found that headphones + headsets don't typically work well. Having the two audio options in those cases (normal sounds in speakers, communication in headset) is ideal.

    Bumping this with a question:

Are there any decent wireless headphones these days? I have a little 19" Samsung HDTV I play on that has an optical out audio connection. Any way I can utilize this with wireless headphones?

I'm gonna go ahead and bump this again.

Any recommendation on a decent set of headphones?

I'm tempted to grab the Bose over-the-ear model for $139, as my TV has a standard 3.5mm jack in the back.

However, if anyone has any recommendations for a set of wireless headphones that use optical that'd be awesome.
