I'd say at this point, the music genre is kind of hinging on Rock Band 3. If they can add something new to the genre, Harmonix stands to rule the whole thing, seeing as how Neversoft has guitar brain damage. If not, then the genre will pretty much fall back on...well, people like us who would buy Rock Band 3 even if it did nothing new.
There isn't anything new to be added, though. I mean, sure support for other instruments perhaps. But that's not exactly innovative or original or whatever other superlative people are clamouring for now. For games like this, it's all about the feature creep and fine tuning what's there.
It really depends on what comes of the rumor/claim that RB3 will to some extent help people learn how to play an actual instrument. If they actually pull that off somehow, it would be a pretty good next step.
Separate from that, sort of;
I'm kind of hoping the new instrument in RB3 is a Continuum style keyboard. It won't be, but that would be awesome.
The Dhani Harrison claim? HMX called bullshit on that. At least they denied his involvement in anything for Rock Band. Whatever Harrison was talking about is highly unlikely to be talked about or shown at E3 as part of RB3.
Anyway, that's for the other thread. That Hitler video needed to either allow the subtitles to remain on screen to be read by non-Evelyn Wood graduates or it needed to be more concise.
Anyway, Poking around the internet, the things I hear most are:
1. at least they're doing something NEW.
2. Needs more Metal (editor's note- Dragonforce isn't what they wanted? What DO they want?)
3. lol pig lol
But not necessarily in that order.
You know, the internet is dumb. You can't say "heavy metal" without running into a bunch of angry white kids proclaiming that "rap sucks lol all they do is talk over a beat lol" while listening to "real music played with real instruments using real talent," which really just means that they're watching some guy jerking off a guitar and masturbating furiously.
It's almost enough to make me hate metal. And I really really really like metal.

"Needs more metal?" Isn't the list we have so far a pretty big clue that they're going for a harder rock sound? Oy.

For some, that's the point. Variety isn't the spice of life for them. It becomes a poison. Slowly rotting them from the inside until they get the urge to wear pretty, pink things.
Or so the German Shepherds would have them believe.

No, I know they denied Harrison's claim. I could have sworn that I saw them say something along those lines more recently.

To be fair, 'metal' is an extremely broad, vague term. Even without getting overly specific with genres, there are many different kinds of metal. There's plenty of variety there.
To be fair in the other direction, some of those people do, no question, just want a ton of one kind of metal.

Perhaps, but I don't remember them saying anything like that. Maybe it's a future goal (sounds like something they might've said a while back), but I haven't seen any indications that it would be any time soon.

At least in this source, the accuracy of the information is questionable, so it very well may not be more than a rumor. I guess we'll see at E3.

You know, if the "pro mode" thing is real it could turn out Dhani Harrison was right all along, and Harmonix just denied it in order to avoid giving away secrets that their competition could incorporate into their game.
Not that Neversoft would be talented enough to do that.
...man, has there ever been a thread for a game that absolutely everyone is so meh over? At least the Sonic threads have TSR gushing over them, at least.

To get us back on topic, I'd like to recommend a song for this game:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHZ9tGJz_gQ
It only has 2 guitar solos

Eh, gotta keep the Scorehero wankers happy.
That really depends on what pro mode ends up being.
