Desktop Down (PSU Failure)

Ok, so I was in WOW earlier today, well, had it open while I was alt-tabbed doing something else, when out of the blue my system completely lost power.

This, in hindsight, was a huge warning sign.

In further hindsight, hearing my PSU fans rev up every few hours was an even bigger one.

Anyway. Long story short, I hit back into game, try to get the Heroic Daily done, and in the middle of it, I lose power again. This time, the system won't come back up to save my life.

PSU was literally too hot to touch. Case outside and around the PSU was also too hot to really touch. Some rather bad dust buildup in there.

I have removed the CMOS Battery, video card, drives and RAM. I have reseated power connectors. The only things left in the system are the psu, cpu, and motherboard.

When I connect the desktop to power, for a split second the fans kick on, the LED in my PSU goes on, and then... nothing. I lose power. Hitting the power button if I give it time will get me a half second of a yellow power button LED, then power goes out.

It is a Dell Inspiron 531 with custom PSU, Solid Amber is Motherboard failure, Flashing Amber is PSU Failure.

I am presuming I need to replace my PSU, hopefully that is the only thing damaged. I am going to leave it unplugged until the morning, then try again, then I'll try leaving it plugged in for a few hours after I get home from work tomorrow. I am presuming that it won't be coming back up, but wouldn't hurt to try.

So, how much would a decent PSU run me?

I have 2 HDDs, an ATI Radeon 3750 HD, and 2 Optical Drives, the current PSU is a 500W.

What's a good brand nowadays? I need 4 SATA power connectors and a PCIE connector.

If you think your power supply is messed up don't run the computer again until it is fixed. You can fry your mobo that way.

I actually yanked the PSU out and put in the original Inspiron 531 PSU. It's serviceable but lacks PCIE power, so right now my system is running onboard video. Not a great situation but it got me back in long enough to backup my data.

So what's everyone's favorite PSU brand? The dead one is Antec. At MyJob I was told to look at OCZ or Enermax.

I have a comparable set up
    65nm quad core proc
    2x hdd
    nvidia 9800gt
    nvidia 8600
    2x optical drives
    etc

all running on a corsair 550w, and while it does run hotter than I'd like under load, it's still going strong after a year of near continous use.
