I don't know what they mean by "badges." I went to PAX last year on Sunday and just dropped in and it didn't seem too packed. Are they really sold out this year?
08-31-2009 WE ARE COMPLETELY SOLD OUT OF PAX 2009 BADGES
For those of you that managed to register, excellent! For those that missed it, I’m sorry! We have no more badges to sell to you! Yes, this includes day-of sales, so please please please do not come to the Convention Center if you do not have a badge! Either wait for PAX East or PAX 2010! Thanks!
apparently they had to turn people away from some events last year or something, and...also didn't they lower capacity or something?
am i... making this up or thinking of some other nerd conference?

i thought they expanded the con this year.
yes that's probably what happened, i might be thinking of something else, one of the comicons that i always think about going to but never actually do.
I am not going this year because I didn't want to stand in line for an hour to get into lectures/panels that I was interested in, and that's what you had to do last year. I may go next year if this year's is better.
The limit on passes was implemented because of this situation, I understand.

So wait is PAX East happening before PAX 2010? I thought that was all going down next year.
Every piece of media I've seen about PAX this year has stressed that registration was limited and that you should pre-register in order to go. On BJ Shea's show this morning they were talking about the possibility of the tickets being sold on eBay or stubhub, so you might want to try that, or post in the PAX subforum asking politely if anyone has any spares. There were still tickets available as late as last month, and Sunday tickets available as recently as yesterday.
Last year was pretty fucking packed on all three days, but don't forget that by Sunday a lot of the people with three-day passes have seen everything and are at community events or panels. It was so packed it's the reason for the limit this year. Just sitting in the queue room was a hassle for the Enforcers last year because of having to keep the alley open for the fire code.
To be blunt, though, if you weren't bothered enough to check it out ahead of time it means that your ticket went to someone who cared more.

I believe it has more to do with fire codes. If the passes are sold out, then it is still going to way too fucking busy to see all of what you want to see.
EDIT: and because it has to do with fire codes, it stands to reason that since it is the same venue, its the same number of passes. And if they DIDN'T sell out last year, then its just going to be all sorts of crazy busy there this year. Last year was insanity (but oh so much fun)
Having worked in the event industry for the entirely of my professional life I've developed a keen sense for people who have a sense of entitlement and are going to demand some sort of special treatment, you're one of them. The very first update on the pax site says hey! preregister now because we're gonna sell out, that was SIX months ago. It's now the week of the event. Pretty much every piece of literature related to pax has included some sort of warning about limited tickets and how you better preregister now.
Then you register here specifically to demand information that's right there for the reading in the updates: WE ARE COMPLETELY SOLD OUT OF PAX 2009 BADGES if you have not purchased a badge online, you will not get into PAX. not to mention the FAQ.
Plus, you're not even in the right forum, despite the link right on the pax site to the pax forum, you ended up here somehow.
To be blunt, though, if you weren't bothered enough to check it out ahead of time it means that your ticket went to someone who cared more.

Please understand that there are now no PAX tickets to be had - none. All tickets have been sold, and there are no tickets available at the door, so if you don't have a ticket waiting for you at will-call you won't be able to come. I wish that weren't true! But there it is. Don't come. You will be sad if you do, and it won't be the kind of sad I can do anything about.
I think the idea this year was to limit capacity so that those huuuuge line-ups would be less existent. It really was frustrating to pay for a convention, get in, and find out that all those cool panels you wanted to attend were completely filled up -- you have no way of knowing until you pay and get in. This way, with the capped amount of people, I think it should be somewhat easier to get around in there
I remember wanting to play TF2 in the LAN area last year, and I could never get in. I am pleased with the capping of attendance.

Oh there are still going to be massive lines in events. You just cant escape that anymore, it will certinally be better than last year though.
Also why couldnt you get into PC Freeplay? that line moves very fast...

Even with capped attendance there will still be popular panels that are too packed to get in. This is my 3rd PAX in a row and I have yet to see the keynote, a Gabe and Tycho Q&A, Make a Strip, or tons of other things. But you know what? I found OTHER AMAZING STUFF TO DO instead. So no complaints here.

Last year the long lines meant I got into neither the keynote nor any of the big panels, in spite of very long waits. At least I got to play some Magic in line and they started handing out extra concert passes as consolation prizes.
This year, all I see on Craigslist are 'WTB' postings, and those are all $125+ per ticket. It looks impossible to land tickets at this point without very merciful friends or prohibitively large quantities of cash.
I didn't have too much trouble getting into stuff last year, but then again I was about half an hour early for everything big. The advantage of PAX is that if you're not going to get into something, there's always something else on.

Huh? In 2007 I walked in halfway through the keynote and got a seat.
2007 was pretty awesome, queue-wise, but it was also the first year in the current building and there were a lot less people. (Exception: console freeplay, which was a clusterfuck in 2007 that was actually a lot better last year. Kudos to the folks who fixed that.)

khoo had mentioned that you should get passes early way way back in march when lots of people were buying them

PAX East is next March (26th to 28th). Regular, West coast PAX is likely to be at the end of august again.
