Ah, cool. My trend in naming is to give them thematically significant names. Like a Magneton named Dynamo, or an Infernape named Wukong. That's just me, though. Gets real annoying sometimes when I just can't think of a good name.

I usually just use the default names, because every time I watch videos of people shoddying and what not, the names are just AWFUL.
Also, Munkus, since you don't have wifi, you might want to look into Shoddy.
Shortly before I entered my Pokemon hiatus I started naming them after songs. I think I had two before I stopped. Vicer, Scizor, and Mordecai, Dusknoir. But Mordecai will be renamed to Mephisto when I get around to it and another more deserving Pokemon will take the name Mordecai.

Ah, I remember reading that. I love being the Pokémon superfan and all, but when it comes to strategy, I totally suck and go with my favorites and what I think might work. I stay the hell away from sites like Smogon because that takes the fun out of raising Pokémon. I'd rather do my own thing and lose than just copy and paste what others say is the "right" way to use such-and-such Pokémon in such-and-such situation. Yeah, I EV train and check IVs and all that stuff, and if I encounter a cool strategy when battling others, I take note and see if I can incorporate it into my own team. And ultimately, I still probably suck at the game, losing way more matches than winning. But like Gabe and the Eevee girl, I do it for fun.

I tend to do this too. I love handing out nicknames. My Infernape is named Son Goku. It just seems lame if I can't personalize my Pokémon, especially when I get event legendaries.
I am trying to figure out how to get some of these trade evolutions. My brother owns the game but we don't see each other that often and even less do we both have our DSes on us. The GTS seems utterly worthless as well.

Yea, I'm trying to avoid Smogon for anything but the description of attacks and ablities: they're way more accurate in those than Serebii.

Hm. I'm kind of in the mood to get into Pokemon again (I stopped about halfway through Pearl) and a lot of my friends have been battling pretty consistently. I think the biggest problem I have with Pokemon these days is that I miss the original 151... but nostalgia shouldn't really stop me from enjoying this stuff. If I restart from the beginning, is there anyone in this thread who would be willing to trade me a low-level Bulbasaur? If I could start from scratch with my favorite Poke, a Bulba, instead of whatever the grass starter is in Pearl, I'd be a really happy camper.
It was funny seeing that guy aqua jet something his own poke uses.
The 'I only use my favorite ones and don't care if I lose' is kind of flimsy. Why does everyone's favorite pokemon also happen to be bad for competitive battling? it's like some huge coincidence that makes you think everyone hates the OU pokes and only uses them because they are good. I bet a lot of it has to do with charizard..

I care if I lose or not. But I form my strategies around the pokemon that I like, instead of choosing pokemon to fit some narrow strategy.

I'm not like 'YOU HAVE TO USE GOOD POKES IF YOU WANT TO WIN', but you can't just throw together random ones you like and expect to do well. There's something to be said about synergy. I use an ambipom lead in ou because I like the poke, but I still carry a swampert to switch into rotom(fake out) and get stealth rock up.

Oi, Munkus, I was connecting to nintendo wifi at work today, and I forgot there's an option to manually input wireless info, in case your DS can't find your wireless. Though I'm fairly sure you've seen it already, on the off chance it'd help, thought I'd toss it out there.

EDIT: My DS is not compatible with my router. It's not that my DS can't find the wireless. It can. It just greys it out and says "CAN NOT CONNECT TO THIS TYPE OF HARGLE BARGLE"
