I've been craving for a good RPG to play... I just re-played through BG2, Diablo 2 (up til Nightmare on solo /players8) and finished Etrian Odyssey 2. I'm looking for something with a lot of character customization that is up there in difficulty and challenge. Any recommendations?
Haven't been able to find anything for 2 days... I'm thinking of resubbing WoW. Help!
If you liked Baldur's Gate II I'd highly recommend Fallout 2. Also Black Isle, change of setting, similar (though slightly shallower) level of NPC characterization. Arguably deeper customization, plus shotguns and power armor.
Arcanum is another top notch game, this time by now-defunct Troika. Also a top-down isometric RPG, extremely diverse classless system, fascinating setting. It takes place in a Tolkeinesque fantasy world undergoing an industrial revolution with early 1900s-influenced art design.
Another game that others will probably recommend is Deus Ex. It looks like a first-person shooter but is structured like an RPG, and takes place in a conspiracy-laden cyberpunk dystopia where your character is always wearing sunglasses and it is always night.
If you're thinking Diablo 2 clones, Titan quest and its expansion would be a good choice. If you haven't played the original Neverwinter Nights you should give that a try (plus its 2 expansions and infinit player made content). Actually that one could keep you busy for a few months.
If you aren't necessarily looking for a fantasy setting then Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 are also superb choices.
If you have a medium to decent machine then you definitely should checkout Neverwinter Nights 2 and even better, The Witcher. Last but not least if your PC can handle it, then no question, gotta try Mass Effect.
If you haven't already done so, the rest of the Infinity Engine games are worth a try (Icewind Dale 1 & 2, Planescape: Torment).
Edit: Icewind Dale, while it lacks a lot of the plot of Baldur's Gate, was designed to be a good (somewhat hard) dungeon crawl with a full player-created party.
Strategy RPGs are where its at if you like challenging gameplay. Or, strategy games with RPG elements. Not all have the same amount of customization, but most have enough to build a squad in any way you want.
Final Fantasy: Tactics (Playstation, PSP)
Tactics Ogre (Playstation, GBA)
Ogre Battle (SNES)
Ogre Battle 64 (N64)
X-Com and X-Com: Terror from the Deep (Playstation, PC)
Jagged Alliance 2 (PC)
Silent Storm (PC)
Fallout: Tactics (PC)

Silent Storm, man I love that game. The exact moment I knew I loved it was when a stray bullet flew through a window and hit a gas tank and blew up the whole god damn house and all the Nazis in it.

Quick question, can you get IWD from any of the direct download places, or on steam? and will it run on the current netbooks? I think it might be perfect to play when I am pretending to be working in coffee shops...
I'll second recommendations for the Black Isle games, and Jagged Alliance 2 (awesome TBS game). I'll also throw in King's Bounty: The legend. It's a really good top-down, turn based strategy RPG. Can be very tough though. Try the demo and see if you're interested.

You look like you could use a nice little roguelike game.
Or consider the Temple of Elemental Evil. Throw in the unofficial patch from Circle of Eight, customize 6 adventurers, and if you can stick with it through the first town you will be ready for lots of tactical combat challenge.

Is it on Steam or something? I had the urge to play it, and didn't want to go.... that route.
Might I be so bold as to suggest Wizardry 8? Really they're all good, but 8 is the most modern. I have been caught up replaying it myself.
Protip: Bards.
Everyone should play that.
Anyway, re: Icewind Dale - just go with the second game. It's better, and you won't really be missing anything, story-wise. It's all about killing anything that moves anyway. You'll basically be the DnD equivalent of a really effective border patrol. 'Woah there, I don't think that thing over there is human. Better stab it.' 'No, wait, it's a human' 'Well. Fireball instead of a stabbing, then?' 'Yeah'.

I gave up trying to find it again in stores.
Sadly it does not seem to be on Steam, Gamersgate, or D2D. The Gold Edition would be the one you would want. It comes with the oh so awesome Sentinels. Well, okay, Sentinels is basically more of the same, but I found the whole "managing money" aspect to be a pretty awesome addition.

There are some fairly good mods for Wizardry 8. Though since it has been years since I last played, I am currently only using one that adds a ton of weapons/armor and some new monsters. Plus it gives most all the weapons and armor in the game it's own unique graphic.

There's also the lovely fact that if you actually go out and spend $texas on it, you aren't guaranteed that you'll be able to play it. The built in malware may decide that it doesn't want to run on your computer for no reason.
If I wanted to play Silent Storm again, I would have to hook up my old PC, which honestly doesn't run it all that well.
Best original JRPG on the DS imo. A lot of customizing abilities with demons, and gameplay thats a cross between an SRPG, and the same kind of battles you had in EO2. Definately high up there with the difficulty as well.

IIRC the European version (or at least the UK version?) didn't have Starforce on it. You might want to try and find that one.
That's like saying chocolate and peanut butter is merely okay.
Speaking of Fallout 3, isn't there supposed to be a Game of the Year edition coming out soon with a good chunk of the DLC on it? As long as The Pitt and Broken Steel are on there, I can see this being the only RPG someone would ever need for a good long while.

Sorry I think you owe The World Ends With You an apology for that statement.
I would go with TWEWY if you are looking for a ds rpg because it really is original. SRPGs have been done but TWEWY is just crazy awesome.

I'm hoping that all the DLC gets released in its own pack. I refuse to shell out cash for those freaking stupid MS Funbux. Heck, if they at least allowed me to pay the exact amount then I might not even mind.
As it stands, the first four have been released in two stand-alone packs, Mothership Zeta doesn't seem to have been released yet.
And there we go, I was wondering how long it would take to go from classic turn based cRPGs to...fallout 3.
Hey, I loved Fallout 1 and 2. Whilst Fallout 3's pretty much a very different type of game, I thought it was actually very well done, had a great atmosphere to it. As a game it's really more of a sequel to Oblivion than Fallout, but where I thought Oblivion was fairly dull, Fallout 3 felt like a much more cohesive experience.
Well apart from the ending. Seriously what was up with that?

TWEWY is great, and definately more original than SMT: DS (Though I meant original as in not a remake/glorified port, since there are a couple rpgs better than any others that fall under that like CT or DQV) but after playing it again I found the characters and plot a bit grating. Not saying that DS doesn't have some of the same (Yuzu >.>) but you know what I mean. It's very much a love/hate game for so many reasons as well. I personally enjoyed DS a lot more.

I don't think IWD is available anywhere for DD.

Talking about steam, vampire: the masquerade: bloodlines (:colons:) is pretty rad
