Someone on the official forums made the following images of what they think the new info box should look like. It's more or less how I'd design a box like that, it's also miles above what Sony actually did because it actually displays useful information, and looks classy to boot.
That looks good initially, but that first panel would probably be ungodly hard to read on an SDTV. Obviously that could be taken into account (like say only show status icons when you press the PS button), but overall a pretty good effort.
I don't really think there's a hell of a lot to fix. Just add options to change the font size, remove the extra PS Store buttons (or just move the direct link to the video store over to the PSN column) and turn on/off the ticker, then make the friends list backgrounds transparent (and a more interesting colour).
Very strange that the what's new section shows you the most recent games played. Wierd placement first of all, but also I assumed that the boxes for my most recently played games would take me to DLC for the games, that would be pretty clever, but no, Sony dropped the ball.
I don't think I like the my little pony sparkles they added to the default theme. I know you can revert back, but the colors seem different now, more pink (to go with the sparkles).
At least viewing your trophies doesn't take 30 seconds now (which doesn't sound like a lot but it gets old fast).

Couldn't they just make a slider in options for the friends list to set transparency level and have the background colors be customizable?
Sony needs to hire a few of us to help hold their hands. Baby steps PS3, baby steps.
I haven't downloaded this yet - does it finally let me sort my PSN games in alphabetical order? Or make folders to put them in? Or anything more than "descending order of last play time"?
I'm pretty sure you already could make folders.
Uh...you could? If you're not mistaken, I've missed this.
Yes you can, I have my PS1 games, my downloaded games, the demos, and Ad hoc party all in their own folders

Yeah, hit square to sort games by platform, IIRC. But it doesn't sort them in alphabetical order, it sorts them in order of date downloaded.

It definitely comes in handy when you have downloaded PS3 PSN games, PSP PSN games, PS1 games, and even want to put games in unique folders (I think if you go to game information (Triangle, Information) you can put in a custom folder name, and it makes the folder for you when you go back to the XMB).
Ooh, it is sparkle-filled, but it's quickly covered by the Wipeout theme I've been using for about a year now. The What's New thing can be turned off, after which I guess that it's normal boot behavior for your PS3

Well discovered something nice in this update. Now you can listen to music and browse at the same time. Along with in browser xmb. If I hadn't spent the last 2 days trying to get braviax off my system I probably wouldn't have cared though.

I was listening to the Joystiq Podcast the other day, and Chris Grahm had an interesting rant about how you have to give Sony some slack because they aren't getting extra money from their playerbase like the Xbox devs are from their subscription service. How much would you agree / disagree with this.

At the end of the day you want a demo of a good game? PSN has it for you free and you can play online on a whim if you choose to. MS horde away demos for gold subscribers. That alone is not acceptable.

I'm not going to write angry letters or anything (not that I did about NXE which I also don't care for), but yeah - Sony mostly gets a pass because I don't give them any money to use PSN. It still lets me play games so I have a hard time really loathing it.
That being said, I think it's a little ridiculous that now every tab I'm interested in has a link to the store. And I'm not excited about it moving me over to Network (or whatever the one with the store and Home in it is called) on login. For comparison's sake I also dislike that NXE defaults me to the Spotlight channel instead of the My Xbox channel.
Word on the street is that the new firmware is breaking some games, like Uncharted.
whats all this now?
basically i would be fine with this patch if they added options to disable/revert stuff. mainly the ticker is terrible and the grey boxes are terrible. im fine with everything else, even if the added store icons are kinda lame.
the funniest part about the ticker is that, even on the off chance that something interesting scrolled by there theres nothing you can do to get more information about it directly. its just random text up there with no interactivity.
I could do with an option to turn stuff off, I really do not want a TV tab or the BBC Iplayer, I fucking hate the BBC. And the link to the store in my game section.

You can default to Game disk: system settings > display what's new and set it to off.
I don't have a ticker and the only extra shop icon is under Game so I don't really have any problems with the new update.

Eh...
I agree that the Gold demo thing is bullshit, but the difference is that they get a lot more demos than the PlayStation Store.

Goddamit I'd punch my mother for an iPlayer on my PS3, you ungrateful heathen.
I just don't see why it has to be visible all the time, regardless of whether or not I'm loading something. As a clock, it's useless, given that the digital one is right there.
*sigh* inconsistent UIs are a pet peeve of mine. Every time I log on, I have this urge to want to change things (font size, gray boxes in the friends list, the analog clock, etc), and then get annoyed when I can't.

yea i didnt say it was useful or good looking or anything, thats just why its there. someone at sony thought it was neat.
As a long-time 360 user just getting a PS3, the lack of demos for most of the downloadable games I am interested in just hurts. Don't know what you got til it's gone.
edit: Does Sony have any kind of online marketplace for PS3 like MS does? I do nearly everything Xbox Marketplace related through the web now.
The bigger text and ticker are pretty damn stupid. It was fine before. Why fuck with it. What dumbass thought "The XMB is slick and classy. It should be more flashy, in-your-face, and ad-filled like the NXE."

I had problems logging in to the store off of my PSP.
I think it was a server thing, not a firmware thing.

I thought I found the option to turn that off, but I was wrong.
Everything's a lot bigger, huh? Which does mean easier to read.
Not a bad thing, but I wasn't expecting it. The additional display boxes are...helpful. If you care at all what's on them.
I think the new version of the automatic information board (I haven't updated yet). You used to be able to turn it off.
i haven't seen it either, but i think that's because it's region-specific info and sony's pal staff are being as slow on the uptake as usual
Ah, well long may their laziness continue.
you could do that all along
