I like the update, mostly for the Afrika theme. But also because I like the new clock instead of blob, and the universal message indicator. Give end users the ability to make dynamic themes and then you have a real winner.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
However, I will say I liked the old news feed and clock stuff in the top right corner better than the new. And the friends list is terrible.
Really? I think the new clock is FAR better designed than the cluttered shit we had before.
As for the friends list, these (fake) pictures have been going aroundthe message boards, so hopefully Sony will be paying attention and do something similar.

You know, I rarely give 'fanmade' stuff like that a second look because it's usually stuff that is just the wrong direction.
But that...I could get behind that. I just wonder if it's feasible.

Most fan mockups never approach that level of typographic sophistication or usability insight, but those must have been done by a professional.
The only feasibility problem I could see is the instant trophy info, but that's probably just something that could be cached more efficiently than how they're doing it right now.
[edit] On second thought, I guess most of the content in those mockups is just grabbed from the Playstation.com web interface, but still, it's a pretty brilliant remixing.

It's not the fact they added a bunch of stupid shit, it's that they added absolutely nothing worthwhile.
Oh, okay. I can understand the extra store icons. And you know you can set it to -not- default to What's New, yeah?
Edit: @UV: Yeah, I can understand that, too.
Eh, maybe I'm just too forgiving because of my awesome Afrika theme.
How does one do this?
Settings -> System Settings -> Display [What's New] -> Off
Sweet. Now if there was an option to turn off the 37 Playstation Store icons.
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....

I see you've managed to avoid every gaming news site and blog since the update.
Really don't like the new UI. It's not like there is anything wrong with it, just seems obnoxious.
And sparkly...
Before the color would change based on the time of the day, it was much better.

That makes sense. You didn't turn off "what's new." You just stopped the PS3 from defaulting to it.
