I've been trying to clear my autocomplete history (I think its a mild OCD thing but I just find the drop dpwn box really irritating, as if I wanted to keep an address i'd add it to my favourites. Deleting history sort of seems to work, but I delete the autocomplete history and yet alot of stuff still remains in the drop down box. I am using an O2 dongle for internet and am on Internet Explorer... I don't know if this helps or not. I just want to be able to clean it so that nothing comes up when I press the 'down' arrow next to my address bar, and can't think of anything else to try.
Unless I misunderstand you, I'm not sure you're deleting the right thing. Auto complete is for forms and the like. The arrow next to your address bar shows browsing history. To delete that clear browsing history and then set it to not save browsing history.
In IE 7 you would go to tools> internet options
In the History section, clear history then go to settings. Choose never to check for update pages and at the bottom set the number of days to 0. I believe that should stop it.

I also use Firefox and mine does. All browsers will if they are set to do it. The trick is knowing how to turn it off and on for your preferred browser.

If you have bookmarks, they will always auto-complete.
Not necessarily, in Firefox 3.5, and I think all since 3.1 actually, there's an option to have it autocomplete for the history, the bookmarks, both, or neither. Not sure about IE though.

Hey, cool. That's still the default behavior anyway.

When I'm trying to cover up the fact that I've been looking at porn (in Firefox), I go:
Tools>Options>Privacy>"Remember what I enter in forms and the search bar" and click that off.

ctrl-shift-p
"p" for "privacy"!
And if you believe that, you've never met an average Firefox programmer.
