can't buy safehouses, money is useless except for weapons, you are ludicrously easy to kill
you can never get those long ass car chases or the mad battles with the police you had in previous games
hopefully BOGT will add some needed ridiculousness back into the game

you can have a chase for however one car can last you. The second it takes too much damage, and you try to "borrow" another one, you will get rammed off the street (which will kill you) or you will be shotgunned while jacking it (which, after two shots, will kill you)
and nope, sorry, no epic police battles. even if you use cover and sliding moves you get taken down way too quickly
GTA4 was still fun but they kind of ruined parts of it by making it too realistic

getting out of the building and into the waiting arms of heavily armored stockades barreling down at me from the street corner is not my idea of fun
jesus if I try to pick a parked car there's the damn jacking "minigame" that stalls you and if you try to stop a driving car there's a very good chance it'll bump into you and make you fall over like a kid with polio.

I played Saints Row 2, and while it did have the wild shit wrecking feel to it, I didn't really like it
GTA4 had quality in it. The polish and care that went into the city, the characters, the plot, and (most importantly) the atmosphere of the game is unsurpassed. I did enjoy the game, and I did finish it and The Lost and th Damned. I just wished Rockstar would've known to tune down the obvious reach towards realism in certain key points.
EDIT: And I have nothing aginst new features! new features are fine. The cover system I loved, and even the highly complicated and demanding buddy system they had going on appealed to me (oh, the girlfriends...). I just didn't like those features, because I felt they hindered the game instead of helping it.
