What do you guys think the chances are triAce's next title is as good as this one was? It's not flawless, obviously, but it's easily their best game in a decade or so.

I think this mainly depends on if their next title is handled by the VP2/RoF guys or not.

I don't know if it's their best game in the last decade though. VP2 was really fun too.

Really wonder what tri-Ace's been up to. Their second generation ASKA engine games still haven't popped up yet.

Been a while since this thread was around, so since I've started my Hard mode run I might as well open the game up for discussion again. I'm still loving everything about it, especially the presentation. Right now I'm about to fight the first boss, that patented Tri-Ace wake-up-call which tells the player that they are, in fact, not screwing around any more so you'd better get ready to step it up. . . hopefully it should go just a bit smoother than the first time around.

Started playing this game about a month ago despite owning it for more than a year. I've hit chapter 8 after 40 hours of play. I'm beginning to think that the game has too many different parts synthesized from drops with hard to differentiate names.

I'm also not getting the 'all hexes fixed' notification on level 12. I'm extremely certain I've cleared all of them. Is there some sort of hidden hex there?

The black bonus dungeon hexes, most likely. There's an elevator on the Level 4 that'll take you down there, but you won't get the energy hexes you need to open it up until the last chapter.

Ok, so is this thread borked or is it bookmarks in general. Planning on picking this up at some point so bookmarked this thread, but it doesn't show up. This is the first negative thing I've seen about the game! Went through the half a dozen other RPG's and glanced over their threads, but this one had the most positive spin. Shame to mar it now! Edit: Well, wth. Now it's showing up... So good game, yeah? I'm trying to avoid spoilers so didn't read page by page of the thread, so any glaring flaws will be a surprise eventually!

    Arise chicken, arise!

I actually ended up grabbing this game a few days ago. Been really enjoying it, though it took me a good while to wrap my head around combat and probably still have a bit to learn. Also recently realized I should be switching my weapons around to maximize my level ups. It's actually pretty obvious now that I think about it, but for some reason I just never put 1 and 2 together. :P

Made it to Chapter 5 and suddenly I hit a brick wall. It seems I am way behind on my levels. Enemies are all 30-35 range and my dudes (and lass) are like 21-24.

I really, really enjoy the characters so far. The overall story is... uh... something, I guess. Not really sure what the fuck is going on, which seems somewhat fitting since the main characters themselves are really just living job by job. Honestly, all three of them are probably some of the most uh, normal, characters I've seen in a JRPG.

Also really like the voice acting. These characters have made me laugh out loud numerous times already. Plus the fact that the characters are designed like actual people is a nice change of pace.

Real reason I rez'd the thread however, is that I need someone to explain to me the freaking Terminal system.

I've tried scouring the net for guides and, I dunno maybe I am stupid, but it just doesn't make sense to me. I know the Terminals are supposed to provide bonuses to... something, but its all over my head to be honest.

So for now I am just trying to grind out levels and trying to finish some of these side jobs before I go after Tits McGee's wine.

To gain levels, you need to switch around your weapons a bit in order to level up their skills. This is well worth it early on and gives everyone some much needed HP. I would recommend giving everyone a go with grenades, the SMG and pistols pretty early on in the game. The earlier you do this the easier time you'll have later when the shit totally hits the fan in later parts of the game.

Having lost all my saved games when my hard drive failed, I have to restart this game. Just after getting past that motherfucking yeti boss (who was honestly a total asshole) as well to add insult to injury. I do love the game a lot however, so I am not going to have a problem with doing that at all when I do sit down and do it. Going to be tough not having the extra handgun and SMG anymore.

As for terminals here is a simple explanation how they work:

    1) You have colored tiles you can put down on the world map. By linking together terminals with the same colored tile, when you're standing on that tile (or in a dungeon you've made that tiles color) you gain the bonuses of the terminal.

    2) Terminals need a certain number of tiles of the color you put down to function, like 15 or so.

    3) Where it gets complicated is when you start merging together tiles so you gain all of their bonuses. So if one requires 15 and another 30, you need a total of 45 tiles to be of the same color before either terminal will now work. Once you do have enough, you gain all of the bonuses - which can make things like drop rates and critical damage absolutely bananas.

It's hard to link all the terminals together early, so don't bother trying except for a few areas. Once you can get a supply of the straight light blue (IIRC?) colored tiles you can pretty much connect everything if you are sufficiently bored and have enough time. This is particularly recommended for the arena once you can do it, as it substantially increases the rewards for doing it.

Ah, alright. It's all starting to come together now. I was under the impression that linking all that crap together was something I was supposed to be doing as soon as I found one.

As for my team, they are all level HG 9, MG 9, G 7-9.

Sadly, switching weapons around wasn't something I realized until Chapter 5.

So in the mean time I've been doing the Arena. Kind of a win/win really. Aside for getting money, items, and those battle token my guys are also gaining levels. Add all that up with the fact that if I lose a fight I don't lose my gains. I would love to link some of these first Terminals up to the arena, but I may have to wait on that for now.

Oh, also, playing dress-up with my team is probably the most insidious and totally addicting money sink I've experienced in a game. :D

Amazon has it new for $20.90. That is where I bought my copy.

edit- At $21 bucks, I'd say this game was money well spent so for.

At first the combat was odd and a bit confusing to me, but then somewhere along the line I realized it didn't play like a JRPG, but more like a tactics style game.

I finished all the quests and put ~90 hours on my playthrough on this, haven't done hard mode or the EX dungeon. The characters are great and the combat feels challenging in a rewarding way. The story was non-existent but, eh.

Shit, I really need to finish this. The combat got kind of.....well, awesome, but all,of it is right there at the very beginning. After 40 hours or so I was ready to move on, but I really liked this and should go back and finish it.

Nothing quite like killing a fat cat gangster by bicycle kicking a grenade into his face. While wearing shades, of course.

  • AxenAxen My avatar is Excalibur. Yes, the sword.Registered User regular
Yeah, once combat clicked with me it became very awesome. Knowing when to use your hero actions and when to save them. Or even when to jump and not to jump.

When an enemy has a ton of armor I usual jump over them and deal scratch damage straight to the main body. Followed by someone jumping over and doing direct damage. One to two runs of that is about all I need for most of the big guys.

Also paying attention to what type of enemies you are fighting can easily swing things in to your favor. Like in the Forest of Idols you have that one type of enemy who has a bomb on his head. One turn of direct damage at them is usually enough to set the bomb off thus killing the enemy instantly, but if you time it right it will also deal a far bit of direct damage to any enemies around him.

I've encountered several enemies that explode easily. Really sucks when they are all up in your face when it happens though. :P

Love the banter between the main characters, both in and out of combat. They really come off like they are actually friends.

    Favorite battle line so far:

Vashyron killed an enemy that exploded right next to Leanne, her remark was something along the lines of:

"You can make your own dinner tonight Vash!"

Though my absolute favorite cutscene was one of the early ones, where Vash and Zeph were watching that movie which, from the sounds of things, was about to have a lesbian sex scene and then the power cuts out, with some hilarious stuff happening afterwards. From start to finish I was laughing my ass off.

Vash: "My forgotten lovers and fallen foes outnumber the stars!"

Leanne: "Do you want me on offense or defense?"

Oh for sure. The game has it's shortcomings, but it is down right fun. I'm having a blast with the combat, the characters, and their one liners. Even though I've heard many of their lines a dozen plus times, I still get a kick out of them. That's pretty fucking rare for me.

I will say this, while I think the chances are slim, if they ever make a sequel (spiritual or otherwise) I hope they include not just more weapons, but more weapon types. Like sniper rifles, shotguns, assault rifles. You have no idea how jealous I was when I came up against a gangster using a shotgun. So jealous.

Just take your time. Fight at the Arena for levels and materials to upgrade your weapons, do side missions before tackling the story stuff and bum around Basel opening up hexes for useful items like healing supplies, grenades, and the odd Bezel Shard. This game rewards you for not rushing and taking steps to prepare, which isn't all that hard if you know what to do and where to go.

I'm still not completely understanding the combat (When to use my hero actions, or just stand at the front and let them come to me while I charge scratch and then direct damage -some enemies can target me and charge up really fast leaving me scratching my head)

You should be fine using hero actions frequently after gaining a few more bezels, giving you more wiggle room. Early on you should try to focus on one target at a time, scratching off as much as possible with a dedicated MG user during Hero actions and finishing 'em off with a good Direct damage shot - don't forget that destroying body parts is a great way to regain Hero Points too! Weapon strength isn't the only factor you should be looking at - Charge Speed and Acceleration are some of the most important attributes, since charging up can get you more effects like full scratch/gauge break or knockback at higher levels, which helps a lot. Remember that you charge faster the closer you are to an enemy (and I think the same goes for them as well); if a team member is in danger of being attacked by something nasty you can try to knock it off balance by Gauge Breaking it or popping it in the air during a Hero action, which resets their attack timer.

Just keep a strategic state of mind during fights - positioning, using cover and the environment to your advantage, and thinking a few steps ahead - and you should be fine for the most part.

I really enjoyed this game. Though the story was, odd. The whole game felt more like each chapter was an episode of a TV show that had an overarching plot. Not a bad setup, just unusual. Would love to see a sequel/prequel/spiritual successor though.

Go to the Waterless Bridge and buy Glass Shards and Iron Scraps from the travelling merchant. Then go and make a Compact Scope Beta. Then sell it for 750 Profit.

Then buy more and repeat. When you're able to buy/make 999 of them at one time you'll make over 700,000 in profit. Get up to about ten million or so and you'll have more than you need.

So I must be doing something wrong in combat. I'm like level 8-9 in Chapter 2 at the Hughes Power Station. Forgot to use the special bullets it gives you (You can't equip them in combat?) and I just get rocked by the boss. I figure I should either level up more or figure out how to use the triangle attack properly? Probably should use those bullets, too. If I could find another machine gun it would help with the leveling. Lets go give it another crack using the bullets, I guess!

If your machine gunner is equipped with the ammunition case you press "select" and choose which ammo you want to load up, then press right trigger to equip the case. (it will highlight your case in the bottom right and show you how much ammo you have)

Make sure your machine gun user doesn't have the least amount of health in your group or he/she will be instantly focused on and that makes winning near impossible. And don't forget the cover in the boss fight. If you get your MG and a HG user over to cover before getting electrified by the beam you can just scratch and break till your cover gets destroyed.

Taking cover and using the ammo did the trick. Though I still seem to take a crap load of scratch damage compared to my health total, even though I suppose that's the point of scratch damage. I think I was using the ammo through out the level on the way to the boss, as hitting R to switch to the case once I got there didn't do anything. I'll confirm that once I start the game again, I just ran home to save it before the power went out or something. I dislike how retry costs money when the fight is after a gauntlet of fights that aren't really dangerous, just time consuming. I have a feeling I'll be using that infinite money trick if only for retries. :P

Money for retries isn't really that big of an issue, unless you're going the whole hog and refilling the hero gauge as well (something I rarely did). As long as you're selling off monetary items like meat, chips, and the like (which you'll be getting quite frequently) as well as excess materials you don't really need for crafting, you'll be fine as far as money goes.

Also, you don't need to switch to the ammo case; as long as you have a special ammo type equipped you'll use it automatically. Not so with the grenade or first-aid boxes, though. To fire normal shots again, just open up the ammo case menu and select "no ammo".

  • XeddicusXeddicus Registered User regular
Ah, thought so about the ammo. Thanks for confirming. I ended the fight with 1 round (I assume each burst/round uses 1 actual item from your inventory...) left it looked like. So that worked out.

I took a quick look at what was ok to dismantle, need to look at what's ok to sell now. Again, thanks.

Yeah, Retry seems prohibitively expensive at first, but after a few chapters it's not so bad.

Unless you're run into one of those gauntlets and then lose only to discover you're out of money because you just had to buy Leanne a new dress.
