Yeah, Retry seems prohibitively expensive at first, but after a few chapters it's not so bad.
Unless you're run into one of those gauntlets and then lose only to discover you're out of money because you just had to buy Leanne a new dress.
That seems like a perfectly valid reason not to have enough money to retry.
I really, REALLY need to go back to this game. I was loving it when I was playing it, but so many other games were coming out at the same time that it kind of got lost in the pack and I never finished it. This makes me very sad.

I think I'm at the end myself. But I had already watched my brother beat the game and the secret dungeon why I never did it myself.
I completely abandoned the arena (6-star. and up to 11-1, but it now goes on to like 30ish starting to show some gold coin matches.. 3 fights each to open the next, or 10 to star it? geeze. Wish you could leader assault this stuff.
-chapter 11over (S a D you bossfight, you horrible horrible bossfight). going into 12 next
edit
-Chapter 13. its Christmas charlie brown! just did all the submissions and going to spend some time in arena staring what I can, at least till I get sick of it then go do the story mission-
Holy crap the game spiked in difficulty at chapter 14, and now in chapter 16 I'm stuck I walked into the final area and got my face wrecked in. (levels around low 70s)
I'm guessing its time to work on my guns again, but I don't see these guys who drop whatever I need for the new stuff (I hope they aren't Never land mobs)
I finished all the quests and put ~90 hours on my playthrough on this, haven't done hard mode or the EX dungeon. The characters are great and the combat feels challenging in a rewarding way. The story was non-existent but, eh.
Money for retries isn't really that big of an issue, unless you're going the whole hog and refilling the hero gauge as well (something I rarely did). As long as you're selling off monetary items like meat, chips, and the like (which you'll be getting quite frequently) as well as excess materials you don't really need for crafting, you'll be fine as far as money goes.
Also, you don't need to switch to the ammo case; as long as you have a special ammo type equipped you'll use it automatically. Not so with the grenade or first-aid boxes, though. To fire normal shots again, just open up the ammo case menu and select "no ammo".
The only reason you should ever have to refill the Hero Gauge would be because you did something silly like run away from combat after letting an enemy have some bezels, and that's a special kind of silly.
I have really got to get back to playing this, because I lost my clear after a hard drive death.
Anyone happen to know the item stack limit? 999? I've been leveling up some and luckily the cap doesn't seem to be 100. It's taking awhile to hit the next level now, though, so it may be time to continue on. Not really that high/far (level 15-18, chapter 3 in the forest), though, so not sure if I should muscle on with the level grinding. Finding a steady supply of things to throw would help.

So, i'm about to start a new game. I played RoF ages ago and stopped because i painted myself in a corner, i think. Aside from switching guns often to level up everyone, what are some things i should know again? My memory is hazy.
