So I had T-Mobile for about five-six years, and for the most part I been happy. Part of the reason I think I have stuck with them is because I have always gotten fantastic service when I call in. I'm just talking about the operator being friendly, etc.

But their phones man..I have never had any luck with them. I currently have the G1, and man do I hate it sometimes. People tell me that they can't hear me well when I'm talking on it sometimes, a lot of times I'll make a call and it sort of just freezes and doesn't make the call, glitches like that. I don't mind the browser, and the 3g I get here in dallas is good.

So anyways, I'm thinking of switching to ATT. Normally I wouldn't consider it as their plans tend to be higher than t mobile and they don't have the whole 'five friends' thing, but if I go in a family plan with the GF, it ends up coming up the same. And of course, the main reason to do all of this is the sexy, sexy, I Phone.

So I come to you guys to regale me with tales of ATT and the I Phone in general. Do you guys find it's worth it? How's the service? Any reason I shouldn't do it? Should I get refurbished or new?

    Yes, get an iPhone.
3gs if you can afford it. Otherwise, 3g is fine.

Are you sure the plans are going to cost the same? I'm not sure what kind of plan you have with T-Mobile, but the required plans for the iPhone are fairly expensive.

The iPhone is really good, but a couple people at work who switched to AT&T solely to get the iPhone haven't been very happy with the signal quality. I'm sure this varies greatly based on where you live though.

The bare-bones iPhone plan winds up being around $80 when you include the $30 data plan. But that's more or less in line with other smartphones.

I've got one and I love it. I don't have any signal problems, then again I live in a mid-sized city.

Hmm I thought I had heard more than that, maybe that's if you want extra features though.

Everyone of these threads yields the same answer: as long as you are ok spending $80/month on your phone, you are fine. AT&T's service can be annoying compared to Verizon, but most people who really like the iPhone aren't going to stop using it cause of AT&T...it's not THAT bad. If you're ok with the budget go for it.

Ganluan I have no idea what extra features you're talking about, the only other thing you can do past the base plan is add more minutes, more txts, or more phones.

My wife and I both have iPhones and we are generally cheaper than the "average" because we have no texting plan (we have it completely turned off) and we have very few minutes (because we don't talk on the phone much to other people).

For me, I got the iPhone because it was "internet in my pocket," and thanks to the app store it's really the internet in my pocket. Furthermore, the iPhone has completely eliminated any desire I had for a laptop -- mostly because while I liked the idea of a portable computer, I really wanted portable internet, which a laptop didn't necessarily give you. So now that I have the iPhone, I couldn't care less about owning a laptop.

If you're cool with AT&T (talk to some friends about coverage -- it's known to be bad in New England and parts of NY), and you're cool with the price, then do it. It's a very high quality device with a lot of excellent support. The App Store is what really makes it better than the competition, and there's pretty much something for everyone there.

I just agreed to extend my Rogers contract by 3 years to get a new 3GS, though due to shortages in hardware, only god knows when I'll get the damned thing. Being due for a hardware upgrade, I even got it at ~half off ($200 canadian), and with a special offer they had going, ended up paying $25 a month more for my data plan, but have a "duration of contract" upgrade from 1 gig per month to 6 for the same price.

Five minutes with my sisters iPhone was enough to convince me. It's a fantastic device and worth every penny IMHO.

So Portable internet is what I'm after as well, but iphones here seem to be hugely expensive far as the monthly contracts go - however I've seen this and seem quite tempted. Not even a phone at all but more small laptop with £30 a year internet (assuming you can't just connect up to wifi somewhere, first year comes with the device).

Only drawback over a iphone seems to be the size (though iphones seem quite chunky to me) but when a site like this tells me that an iphone is going to cost just under £1000 over two years I'm pretty tempted to stick with me cheap pay-as-you go mobile and pay £150 for a portable internet/mp3/video player. I've also not forgiven apple for a friends ipod wiping out all the music on my PC by trying and failing to convert it all into a new format which makes me a bit reluctant to get one...

Any obvious catches that I can't see (only thing I can see is that you have to pay an extra £30 if you want to take it to other countries whilst getting fewer minutes of its own internet connection, going off available wifi seems uneffected)

I've wanted an iphone for some time and finally got my hands on a 3gs. It is a really fun little gadget. The apps are great, the internet is great, the ergonomics of the phone are great...really love the interface.

Just don't plan on getting much reception from at&t/cingular in any building that has a roof over it.

And it's not that great of a phone.

All things considered I don't regret my purchase one bit

Reception changes depending on where you live. Baltimore has awesome 3G coverage, even in basements.

Agreed. I get perfect coverage. Not only that, but I'm almost always able to connect to some wireless network, at which point I use the free VOIP app and now I can talk without using any of my minutes. Then they'll roll over into a ball of awesome.

Definitely do the family plan. The Wife and I have the the lowest plan (450 minutes or something). Her iPhone is basically the normal rate, but my voice line is only $10, and then the normal $30 for the data plan. This works out even better if your g/f doesn't have an iPhone, as you basically end up with a normal voice plan and an iPhone plan for what an iPhone would cost on its own.

You can also in most cases safely get the lowest minute plan. You get unlimited calls to all AT&T mobile customers, so if most of your minutes are calling the g/f anyway, all your plan minutes roll over and in a few months you have something like 2500 rollover minutes.

If you care at all, one difference between the 3g and the 3gs is that the 3gs actually has MMS to view picture messages normally.

I finally signed up for the ATT website to see if i was eligible for an upgrade from my 1st gen iphone and i have something ridiculous as far as rollover minutes. I could probably stop buying minutes for a year and still use my phone without interruption.

of course i cant find a 16gb 3gs in san antonio to save my life

wth are you talking about? both 3g, 3gs, and 2g fully support MMS since firmware 3.0 dropped.
it's AT&T that's holding it back, and they've said that on the 25th (9/25) they're opening it up.

that aside, YES GET THE iPhone.

most satisfying electronics purchase I've ever made, it is completely unparrelled in terms of usability, beauty, and functionality.
