Is it just me, or is it a little odd that most people are shitting a brick about him being black, but not about him being hispanic? Like, it just seems to me that would be an all or none situation, and honestly it makes me a little uncomfortable that it's okay for him to be half-hispanic, but not half-black. I'm guessing most people don't mean it that way, but it feels like really thinly veiled racism.

Kinda iffy on him being only 13. Especially if after 155 issues he has his 14th bday. I'm sure I'll get over it, but still :(

I actually really like his age.

A lot of writers deal with 16+ teens like they are just tiny adults, which isn't true. Bendis actually understands how teenagers work, but Peter's schooling kind of got thrown under the bus in the latter bits of USM.

A 13 year old kid will be a very different comic, one I think will be a blast to read.

I think thirteen may be too young

fifteen is kind of pushing it even, I think

  • BlankZoeBlankZoe Registered User regular
    Why?

    Damian is, what, 11?

I get that he is a genetically engineered superkid but the new Spidey has got superpowers of his own.

Plus, it isn't like Bendis is trying to tell the same story as before, but with a younger character. It's a new book.

If Bendis goes any younger he's encroaching on Mini Marvels territory, and that's one battle he just can't win.

Ultimate Fallout 4 was really good.

I like him. He's Spider-Man, but far rougher around the edges. I'm willing to give Bendis a chance to see where it goes.

    I'm also down for Spider-Man's amazing friends...sorry Ultimate X-Men.

I also like it because there won't be any "When is the eventual M.J or Gwen hookup going to happen?" question.

Or you know, at least there shouldn't be.

According to Previews re.: the Ultimate Universe
The new Ultimates storyline involves Asgard being attacked by the 'Children of Tomorrow', who are presumably the 'Ultimate Future Foundation' people Reed Richards is involved with.

So I guess he's probably the villain.

    Yes and no
The Children of Tomorrow could also be the Illuminati-esque group that Tony was meeting with last issue.

Hickman also copied some stuff from Morrison's New X-Men run and put it in a slightly different context.

Hickman's stuff has been the best of Fallout so far, Spencer's just been an afterthought.

  • BlankZoeBlankZoe Registered User regular
Spencer hasn't been bad, I would say.

It is just that the mutants are in Omega Level Angst mode right now, which can be a chore to read through. Once we get to Bobby and Johnny and Jimmy being bros it will be fine.

This week's Spencer story was super boring, though. It was all talking heads to reveal something we already knew, with a minor change.

Seemed like kind of a waste to have a Clayton Crain story with pretty much no action

I'm sure the simple truth of the matter is far too simple for most people to accept without crying racist but the issue isnt that the new spiderman is black or hispanic (or possibly gay), it's that it screams the fact that they killed off a beloved character to replace him with a minority. The simple truth is that all the spiderman spinoffs (spider womans and various spider girls), have just not taken off like regular spider man. We loved spider man because he was peter parker just like you love superman because he is clark kent in the same way we love bruce wayne because hes batman (And not the opposite of these facts). Could they have introduced this character slowly and had him take over, such as James Rodes did in Ironman/War Machine? That might have worked...but this 'jerk the guy we love out and replace him with this one, then hope nobody will notice' just screams (Much like DC is doing right now with women) that Marvel wanted to try and steal peters demographic and shift it over.

He might be a great character...but the way they are doing this is pretty unforgivable to me. I find it hard to accept that MJ and Aunt May are going to play a huge role in this without making the 'replacement' that much more obvious so not only do we lose the ultimate versions of Peter but MJ, May, Flash, and all those other characters we have grown up with.

I just get the feeling we should all start singing

For those of you that are not insane, there's a pretty great Bendis interview on Newsarama about Miles. Supposedly they had talked about doing this as far back as Ultimatum, but Bendis didn't feel like he was done with Peter yet at that point.

Oh hey, azith is saying dumb things again. Big surprise there. Ooh, he even played a pre-emptive reverse racism card! Now you can't say that any of his dumb statements are race-baiting without be implicitly accused of being racist yourself!

The fact that you automatically assume Miles exists solely as a token or to push an agenda stinks of projection on your part.

When he dies, I hope they write "Worst Affirmative Action Hire, EVER" on his grave. His corpse should be trolled.

To recap, that's 616 Spider-Man, Movie Spider-Man, Marvel Adventures Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Edge of Time game, newspaper strip Spider-Man, and the cartoon version of Ultimate Spider-Man.

If you can't handle one version of Spider-Man being different, then I got nothing for you, man.

616 Spiderman is about to face an entire city full of citizens with powers similiar to him. It actually seems to be shaping up to be a really good story.

Mary Jane. He has a girlfriend, but hey... that's the best part of unmarried Spider-Man.

    Because...

    1. I don't really read comics, I just read about them. (I have a subscription to the Marvel Digitial Comics Unlimited, but I'm trying to decide where to start now that I've read through the Ultimate stuff)
    2. I thought Mary Jane was out of the picture thanks to one more day
    3. Her hair looks brown, not red.
    4. She looks crazy as shit in that picture, and not how I'd expect Mary-Jane to look.
    5. Even though all that, my guess would have been it's Mary Jane, but I figured I would ask :P
    6. So pllllllllllllbbbbbbttttt to you. :P

Depends. Serious? Light and fluffy? What are you looking for?

    2. I thought Mary Jane was out of the picture thanks to one more day
They aren't married. They are platonic besties with MJ pining secretly over him while he attempts to bang everything that moves with female parts.

    3. Her hair looks brown, not red.
    Agreement.

    4. She looks crazy as shit in that picture, and not how I'd expect Mary-Jane to look.
She gots cool Spider-powers and gets to not only see her crush without a shirt on, but also gets to wear said shirt. I'd have crazy eyes too.

    5. Even though all that, my guess would have been it's Mary Jane, but I figured I would ask :P

I was probably just going to start with Deadpool's run, but I just need to get around to it.

  • BalefuegoBalefuego Registered User regular
Well for 616 spidey, brand new day is the obvious place to start. They aren't all winners (ugh Bob Gale) but there's plenty of good stuff and the sheer volume of stories available should ease the burden of the few duds.

For general marvel u, since you have unlimited you may as well go back to the start of the current era with Bendis' New Avengers and Brubaker's Cap

    [SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
  • AutomaticzenAutomaticzen Registered User regular
New Avengers is solid but doesn't go anywhere quickly. But that's less a problem if you're reading the whole run in a few sittings.
