I just finished the first volume of ultimates... Um... So I guess they're defining ultimate by levels of 90s Xtreme? (I kind of see this in the first volumes of xmen and spiderman too) I'm assuming it gets better based on the screens I've seen in this forum lately.
It's weird though because there's so many seeds for great stories here and I'm sure they'll start to play out. The hulk/banner dynamic is great. the hulk himself is, uh, not. Thor's story here is really cool and I can't wait to see that continuing on. Tony seems to have some strong motivations that will be interesting to watch develop. Even cap has a nice twist on the character.

Just remember, the Ultimate universe was the asshole universe for awhie.
hmmm... so it was Major event (the wolverine origin revealed), Mediocre sequel to classic story that sold on reputation alone(an $8 selling 160k... damn!), All 3 Ultimate books (2 of which into their 2nd year), Morrison's X-Men run, and a 9-11 Tribute book.
Yeah that sounds about right honestly. I bought all but 2 of them, hah.
The first trades of USM and UXM actually brought me back into buying comics, along with picking up the reboot of X-Force where they dropped the comic code.
Hi Brian, I am a big fan of "Generation X" and liked your run on the book. Are there any plans for a Generation X reunion in "X-Men?" Or could we see the Ultimate Comics version of this team in the future?
I've asked after a lot of those characters, but have never really seen an easy or clean way to bring them all together. I wish I could. I actually wish I could write "Generation X" again, as it was back then, now that I actually know what I'm doing. That was my first paid writing job, some might not realize. I was pretty literally tossed in the deep end without really knowing how to swim. But... that last story arc I did on "Gen X" called "Four Days," I'm still really proud of and hope to see it collected someday.
Anyway, look for a Gen X-er to join the team in "Ultimate X-Men," by issue #15.
2) Will we see more of Jean Grey in the Ultimate book?
Absolutely, and in a major, major way. But not for a while. This trajectory I've put Kitty and her team on needs to play out a bit, and once we're past the "Divided We Fall" event and are into the next phase of the story, Jean'll be back. And she'll be coming back to a very different America and a very different Kitty Pryde.
Renaldo is curious to see what you Ultimate-ly do as well:
1) I'm a big fan of your "Wolverine & the X-Men: Alpha and Omega" title (as I love Mark Brooks' art), so I need to ask -- would you consider introducing an Ultimate Quentin Quire as you already have a great handle on him?
Ha, that never occurred to me but it would be a lot of fun. I can see where that might work, actually -- I'll have to ask about it. And thanks, I loved writing him and writing that miniseries.
2) Would you be tempted to do an all-out clash between your book and the Hickman/Humphries 'Ultmates' title, like what is currently being done in AvX?
Right now we're working really closely together -- both the characters in our books and Sam [Humphries] and I personally -- coordinating our stories. I'm still amazed at how tight that Ultimate universe is, and how many Excel spreadsheets and timelines exist to keep it all in sync. So right now everyone's on the same side, which is probably good since I have a hard time imagining how the X-Men would really be able to hold their own in a toe-to-toe with the Ultimates.
3) Will you dive into the Xorn twins’ origin a bit more in your book?
No plans yet, but the Jean Grey/Tian stuff will be thundering back into my book in eight month's to a year's time or so, so there will be chances then.
And the new cover to 14!

Synch is one of the characters, of all who go through the revolving door, I wish would come back to life. In a sense I'm glad he's stayed dead, but on the list of mutants to bring back he's hella above Doug Ramsey or Blink.
I do not care for the pacing in this weeks Ultimates.
It felt a little slower and I didn't care for the end point. It feels more trade built then previous comics. That said there is some good stuff in there and I look forward to the next.
Ah Synch, I remember out of all the Gen X kids he was suppose to be the one with the most potential, an Alpha or Omega, whatever it was that meant he could be one of THE most powerful mutants ever.
Then again I remember his debut they made him look like a street wise teen fairly well built with some attitude. Everything after had him as a rather skinny not so street wise typical black dude who was rather dull.

The Art though.
I felt the pacing was fine, though I do agree it was a lot of setup. Next issue should def be nuts though as it's the conclusion to the arc.
I mean we should see
Modi, west coast ultimates, whatever nick fury is up to, the "conclusion for now" of Reed Richards.
Also I gotta assume that the president "giving" Reed Tony was all part of the plan, the whole playing to his ego bit.
Also the whole 4 artists thing made me

Hm...the slant of Ultimate Spider-man's eyepieces make him look more...innocent. Is it just me, or is 616-Spider-man's eyepieces more diagnonal than Ultimate Spider-man's eyepieces?
Nick Fury looks a decade younger... And so unlike Samuel L. Jackson.
But I like it. I like the covers of Spider-men, expect where Peter and Miles are unmasking each other...
Back before the "Heroes Reborn" re-launch of the Avengers titles Iron Man was revealed to have been working for Kang for a long time and basically became a villain. He was then replaced by a 17-year-old Tony Stark from the past who became the star of the title until the title was re-launched (no explanation was ever given to how Stark re-aged or anything by the way).

Tony Stark went crazy because he was a sleeper agent of Kang the Conquerer, and also Mantis, who was upset at the Avengers and her Spirit Sowrdsman husband because something something.
Anyway Tony went crazy, tried to change time by removing Vietnam from existence, Mantis' father is back to life and a superhero for some reason, Tony killed Luna's nanny and Yellowjacket and his PR person for Force Works and framed Hawkeye for the murders. So the Avengers go back in time to pull Teen Tony into the present to fight his future self, and almost dies against crazy Tony. But anyway Tony sacrifices himself in the end and Teen Tony is now in the present wearing armor and then Onslaught happened and Tony went back to being normal and it is never really brought up ever again.
The story arc "The Crossing" reveals Iron Man as a traitor among the Avengers' ranks, due to years of manipulation by the time-traveling dictator Kang the Conqueror. Stark, as a sleeper agent in Kang's thrall, kills Marilla, the nanny of Crystal and Quicksilver's daughter Luna, as well as Rita DeMara, the female Yellowjacket, then Amanda Chaney, an ally of the Avengers (the miniseries Avengers Forever later retcons these events as the work of a disguised Immortus, not Kang, and that the mental control had gone back only a few months).
Needing help to defeat both Stark and the ostensible Kang, the team travels back in time to recruit a teenaged Anthony Stark from an alternate timeline to assist them. The young Stark steals an Iron Man suit in order to aid the Avengers against his older self. The sight of his younger self shocks the older Stark enough for him to regain momentary control of his actions, and he sacrifices his life to stop Kang. The young Stark later builds his own suit to become the new Iron Man, and, remaining in the present day, gains legal control of "his" company.
During the battle with the creature called Onslaught, the teenaged Stark dies, along with many other superheroes.
However, Franklin Richards preserves these "dead" heroes in the "Heroes Reborn" pocket universe, in which Anthony Stark is once again an adult hero; Franklin recreates the heroes in the pocket universe in the forms he is most familiar with rather than what they are at the present. The reborn adult Stark, upon returning to the normal Marvel Universe, merges with the original Stark, who had died during "The Crossing", but was resurrected by Franklin Richards. This new Anthony Stark possesses the memories of both the original and teenage Anthony Starks, and thus considers himself to be essentially both of them.

The mini will run along with the two titles. The two different titles will still have their own non spider-men storylines going on.

in 2002 comics were still shaking off the 90s and America was still in its' 9/11 fueled patriotic stage
Haha, yeah that is cool

Yup.
I started buying comics on a regular basis in 2003-2004, and those were the prices back then.
Seriously, comics pricing went fucking bananas in the last decade.

oh, and when the big 64-page annuals were like $2.
It was awesome getting to take my $5 allowance every week and go to the comic shop and get 4-5 comics.
...oh I could go to the used bookstore and get stacks of old comics like West Coast Avengers and the Simonson era Thor run for like $.50-$.75 each...
...god I am getting old. I just realized I started buying comics 21 years ago with the Infinity Gauntlet series.

also now I want Peter to just start cracking up when he meets Nick Fury Jr. for the first time
but that probably won't happen

I mean, if he doesn't, I feel like the whole event's just a massive flop.

what is going on with pete's feet
why is miles seven feet tall with the proportions kareem abdul jabbar
Also the perspective might be a little off, but Miles is sized about right against Tony and Nick, he just looks bigger since he's coiled up.
