Gah, I've been terrible about updating on here but just had to share that after about three weeks being back on a swim team I'm already down 13lbs! *does a happy dance*

For anyone who is looking for a good compromise between eating whole foods and having something easy to eat Dovirstrgn and I discovered Larabars (http://www.larabar.com/) which have an ingredient list like something you would make at home (dates, apples, almonds) no chemicals, no nothing.

Well, I think it's a good sign that I wasn't able to eat the entire thing of this microwave teriyaki thing i used to have no problem finishing off... it actually rather shocked me that i couldn't (or didn't feel the need to) finish it.

Time for me to update you guys on my status with this project as well. I've been purposefully trying to lose weight since March 15th and I've hit my first mini goal which means I'm on track for the weight I'd like to be for PAX.

Improvements I've made: I now eat at least three times a day if not four, I now exercise at least three times a week or an average of 2 and 1/2 hours each week, I no longer drink soda or milk (and I've increased the amount of water I drink, and I cut back seriously on the amount of added sugar I eat.

Good luck everybody! We really should meet up at PAX, make sure to bring a before picture for those of us that haven't seen you before. I promise I'll ooooh and aaaaah appropriately.

    That's awesome.

I went running yesterday. 1 mile in 11'20" Against my will, the wife was going and I couldn't let her go it alone. I nearly passed out and my head was spinning the rest of the night. I need to get back into shape. :P

Yeah, I'm not meant for physical exertion. I walked up the hill to lower Queen Anne yesterday. It was 70deg. By the time I reached the top, my head was pounding, I felt hotter than the sun, and was itchy everywhere.

This is why I don't do anything but sit around. This is also why I hate summer.

The other day I went for a run with my training group, we did what is known as the Kings Park 4. We did them all in one hit, one after another with a light run between then which would have been around 3.5km (a bit over 2 miles) total on top. Click the links to see images of them.

Mount Street - about 500m incline, starts at around 30% and gets up to 70% by the top. It is murder on your legs. I jogged down then ran back up.

Jacobs Ladder - at the top of Mount St it meets Cliff St. At the end of Cliff St is, well, a cliff. Except for this awesome staircase thingy called Jacobs Ladder. Around 240 steps in a 70m incline straight down the side of the cliff. It got a reputation for physical challenge during the 90's when the local football team was made to run it repeatedly by their coach if they lost the previous weekends game. After a few weeks they started winning games because it was easier to run themselves into the ground on the field than run Jacobs. In fact the years this policy was in place they made the finals every time and won the grand final twice. I walked down and then ran back up (traffic permitting, had some walkers in front of me for about 1/3 of it).

Kokoda Trail - Aptly named after a trail in Papua New Guinea which Australian Soldiers trekked across and mostly died on during World War 2 is this roughly hewn staircase on the side of the hill. It goes up 65m from the bottom and due to its irregular-shaped and spaced out steps is a pain to climb, especially as about 2/3 of the way up the incline suddenly rises to 75% for about 10 of the 65m. Our trainer TAUNTS us with threats of going on this track if we don't do well enough. We don't try to see if he's joking. I jogged down and ran back up it.

DNA Tower - One of the geeky parts of Kings Park, 202 stairs fashioned in a double-helix make for a pure stair-climb and a half. By the top your head is usually spinning from a combination of vertigo and spinning around in circles going around the helix. Often we do shuttles on DNA, running to each landing in turn, up 1/4 way and back, then 1/2 way and back, 3/4 way and back and then a full run up and down. I ran up it and then walked back down. I hate going down stairs, my height makes it feel weird.

Took us bout 45 minutes after a quick game of soccer to warm up and some stretches after to bring the entire session to an hour.

This is what I do normally too, about 3 times a week. Good fun.

Zeus Almighty, CuZZa! That's awesome!! Seattle has its challenges, but I wish we had fun trails like those. :)

I bike about 8 miles to and from work/uni on weekdays, and walk and bike most everywhere around Seattle. My problem, though, has always been my meal schedule: skipping meals when I shouldn't, eating late, only eating when my body signals the need... all of which triggers starvation mode. :P But ever since a coworker gave me a stern talking to, I've been improving. I'm not sure how much of an improvement to expect, because I'm at an average weight (146 at 5'5.5"). I am anticipating a noticeable loss during my summer trip to India, however.

Returning to the cycling... I actually had an idea, on one of our sunny days, to secure a webcam to my helmet and bike from my house in Fremont to the convention centre downtown. A roundabout, scenic route is 5 or 6 miles, and probably takes me 35 minutes. Often people worry about hotels or destinations being too far from PAX, or expect them to be closer. I thought it'd be neat to give non-locals a look at the city and a better spatial map. I would cut out a lot from the video, but it would include audio, and hopefully I'd be able to add a timer and labels for notable sites and buildings.

Unfortunately, I don't have a webcam of my own and don't know anyone in the area who does, but if people think it's a neat enough venture I might give thought to purchasing one.

Milk for example is a basic part of any persons daily diet, no matter their age. It doesn't just contain calcium for bones and fat, but a bunch of other nutrients that are good for you. I would never cut out dairy completely.

Quite honestly I disagree. A lot of people don't realise that they too are lactose intolerant, or have digestive/weight issues because they buy into the "MUST eat this for a balanced diet" mentality. Same goes for the numbers of people which are affected by glucose, so eating large amounts of grains isn't a good idea either.

Those are just a couple of the things which while we may think they are good (and for a lot of people they are), those foods can just as easily be causing issues without the person even realising it. You don't even necessarily have to remove it entirely - even I have a small bit of yogurt every now and then - but cut down on your overall intake, and if you find it's having positive effects, see what you can do.

Craving salt, and going for crisps/chips/fries, is honestly a really bad plan. Sure you're not just trying to rationalise a guilty pleasure here?

Everything in moderation- including moderation is not a bad rule to eating healthier. While I agree that most people need a healthier regular diet, honestly there's very little wrong with once and a while eating a bunch of stuff you really like. It may set you back a little bit, but if you've committed to eating right and maintaining a decent amount of activity, honestly it's hardly going to be an issue. There's nothing wrong with giving into a craving every now and then, as long as you don't make a habit of it.

I also have to agree though, the longer you go without eating something regularly, the less you crave it, so that helps too.

Like I said, lactose intolerance can be worked around with supplements, but a blanket statement of 'MILK BAD' is a little silly. My friend is completely lactose intolerant, to the point that even the most miniscule amount of dairy makes her sick. Even bread that has been brushed with milk to brown it during baking makes her sick which even cuts out something as simple as Subway for her. I'm not saying to eat something even if your body can't handle it. But for those who can, do it, it's good stuff. Like anything, if you're concerned, go see a doctor.

Also it's gluten in wheat, not glucose. Glucose is sugar. I did gluten free for a while when living with a GF housemate too.

Rationalise smationalise. If my body needs salt I'll give it something salty. Not like I'm shoving a super-size fries with every meal and going 'HOMPH MOMPH BODY NEEDS SALT'. My trainer said nothing wrong with a small salty snack, just gotta work a little harder to work it off after. Also my salted snack of choice is usually some salted nuts or air-popped popcorn. It is rare I hit up the crisps or have fries.

Either way, whatever works for people individually, thats the way they should go. Get advice from a doctor, health specialist or a fitness specialist. My trainer happens to fall into two of those categories. I've seen a doctor and apart from the usual "You should look into losing a little weight." (No shit, I've only lost about 50kg already you quack) I'm otherwise perfectly healthy. I'm just sharing what has worked for me and what I'm being told by someone who knows. TBH, most people don't need to change much, just take things in moderation as always.

Wouldn't this be harder with a webcam since you'd need to attach it to a laptop and have that recording the video/audio? I've done stuff like this with a phone camera or point-and-shoot mounted (read: duct taped) to my handle bars which turned out ok. You would even just record audio then use a mic on your computer later to dub audio on top which will be more audible.

Sounds like fun anyway, I'd like to do the same kinda thing to show you guys around Perth. But then again Google Streetview has done most of that for me already :P

Oregon Scientific makes a great little camera for that sort of thing, the ATC2K. A lot of my friends use it mounted with a GPS mount for motorcycle ride vids. I'm sure the same idea would work on a bike- but you might need some other kind of mounting system. I don't know about webcam, but it's great for taking vid and then posting it.

Yes yes! Apologies -- I meant to say action cam. But, mm... Perhaps video recording with a plain digital camera could suffice? I'm rather worried about the shaking, but then, I'm not sure how an action cam compensates for that.

I downloaded the "Lose it!" application for the iPhone. It is very cool for being a free app. Track what you eat, track exercise you do, set a goal, etc.

It's very easy to use and if you stick with it and really track your stuff every day it will be an incredible tool to help lose weight, eat right, and more.

I have filled in two days worth of food so far and everything I have eaten has been in there.

    Man, I'm really kinda unhappy...

It's probably been over a week and a half since I started my Wii Fit regiment. For the first half, my weight was going down and down and down, and I was feeling really proud of myself. But the next thing I knew, everything was just going up and up and up! And today, I was working and it noticed some weight change during the exercise. I thought, "Okay, it's gonna tell me that I've finally lost some weight during the workout." But, no! I body tested again and it said I had GAINED some weight. Considering I can't grab as much stomach meat and that it hurts to pinch, I know I'm starting to grab muscle, so I MUST be gaining some muscle mass, but it's still a little discouraging to see, especially when I'm hitting the drastically high end of "Normal". But, honestly? What I think MAY be happening is...
...it's kinda closing in on "that time of the month", so I may just be naturally bloating anyway.
    . Maybe?

Short term fluctuations mean almost nothing, there's many things that can cause them, and are generally insignificant. What's more important are the overarching trends, like at least over a month.

I have gained 5 lbs in a day and lost 5 lbs in a night before. Water weight is a bitch. Also the amount of food in your system makes for a significant amount. If I don't eat much for a day or two I can drop a good 4-5 lbs. It's nothing but my system being empty. At the same time an all you can eat Chinese buffet and a low fiber diet can pack on a good 4-5 lbs or more until it passes through your system. That kind of thing isn't fat or muscle just volume.

Best thing to measure success is fat calipers. Aim for a body fat % and forget the scale. In losing you will plateau a number of times as you go down. It's your body trying to equalize. It doesn't like to lose or gain weight.

You'll get there DON'T GIVE UP! YOU CAN DO IT! :x

To go along with that, measure consistantly by doing it in the morning before a shower, before breakfast, and after your daily. That way if you do it regularly you can more easily gauge your actual weight.

Okay, so I'm going to do some before and after videos here.

First, from November 2007 (I know that this is crappy editing and writing and commentary, please don't be mean it was a long time ago! icon_neutral.gif) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hDLFnzvGdg#

Now, a video from yesterday! http://vimeo.com/4506216

I've lost about 60 lbs, and am still losing.

Not really doing much except being more active, and eating a lot less.

    Good luck everyone!

I think you and prox are both right. I have the same trouble, and WiiFit does make it a bit aggravating when you're just starting to work out. Just keep it up! You do start to gain weight when you first start exercising because you're building up muscle (and muscle weighs more than fat! ... I have to keep telling myself that..)

Also, like the cute little Wii board avatar says, your weight fluctuates at least 2 lb every day due to meals and daily changes, so if you do your thing at the same time every day, it will be more accurate (but will probably still change slightly from day to day). After awhile though, if you keep it up, you'll start to see a more significant down-curve. YAY KEEP GOING WOOOOOOH!!!!!

And also CW YOU ARE AWESOME! YOU KEEP IT UP TOO YAYAYAYAYAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yea the weight fluxes are kind of annoying. I try not to pay attention to it, I'm about 5 pounds heavier than I was 2 weeks ago, but I'm also doing some pretty intense weight lifting right now. I'm definitely guilty of checking my weight a lot, but at least when you are gaining weight it encourages you to keep doing more....well in theory....

Just got some protein shake stuff a week ago and seeing how that works out, so far it helps my muscles feel better after a workout, and I'm pretty sure my short-term weight gain has been directly related to this protein shake business.

I remembered that I have to go to a cousin's wedding in like a month, so I need to get crackin! My goal now is to need a new suit in a month :)

With regard to the issue of bloating, I'm far from knowledgeable, but I play ice hockey and will tell you the week before and first part of, I have to relace my skates a little looser to make up for the water gain. So you might have something there, too, as well as what everyone has said about trends and muscle mass.

Ungh, this can suck. I was losing a bunch of weight around when I got married. I bought a tux for a Christmas party with the intent of wearing it at the wedding, the wedding rolls around and it was WAY to big so I had to buy a new one a month or so before and then the day of it still ended up being loose.

Not the best for motivation but here are some "bad" things about losing weight. (not that they come close to out weighing the good things but...) Maybe you can gat a laugh from them.

I have learned my tail bone sticks out so that without the extra ass fat I now sit directly on the bone and can not sit for long periods of time without pain, also situps are impossible due to rolling over the bone every time.

    Gross one...
Now, all sweat is directly under my arms instead of spread evenly over my body so the slightest bit of warmth and under my arms is soaked. (the deodreant keeps me from smelling but it's still wet)
I offered to help some friends move and when I tried to "use my weight" to tilt back the washing machine on the hand truck I was sadly ineffective.

I have a HUGE wardrobe of nice clothes of which nothing fits.

I can now wear my wifes clothes. (but is that really bad?)

    Anyone have any more?

I used to love winter because I would be kept warm by a layer of fat on my body. Now I freeze my ass off every goddamn winter!

I'm with you on the wardrobe of clothes thing too. Most of my old stuff, work clothes especially, just looks stupid on me with how loose it is. Buying new clothes from it is expensive.

I would love winter too if it wasn't so freaking cold. (and I'm being a wuss since I'm only from south BC.) Over the past year my metabolism has dropped noticeably enough that I am now always cold. Which is another reason to exercise more, if I have a higher metabolism, my body will become warmer.

i could have sworn i posted something yesterday.. musta got et by the Internets.

trying to exercise more, but i seem to be plagued by injury. jogged on the treadmill for ~17 minutes last Monday.. went shoe shopping on Wednesday night. apparently trying on heels only with my right foot caused a hamstring pull. :x how embarrassing. my coworker says my muscles were still weak from Monday's jogging.

now the hammy's healed, but i aggravated an old inner thigh muscle injury, so now that has to heal. very frustrated with not being able to work out. i guess the lesson is, don't be like me and bite off more than you can chew right off the bat. :|

oh, and for negatives of weight loss? once all this fat is gone.. i can't use it as an excuse to hide from the opposite sex anymore. :?

One of the keys I find to exercise is stretch lots and well. Hold every stretch for a good 15-20 seconds, no bouncing the stretch as that does not do it properly. At least do 2 sets of quads, hamstrings, and calves. Warm up with something lighter than your workout before going into something intense, for me it is usually a brisk walk or a light game of soccer. Also stretch well immediately after to cool down.

Also if you pull up a little sore after, do stretches in your off time, it always helps to stretch it out if its stiff or tight. If you injure yourself, ice the muscle and if you really injure yourself (like cannot walk properly) then for the love of god go seek professional help such as a physiotherapist ASAP. I had an injured quadracep and seeing him brought the recovery period down from 2 months with a high chance of re-injury to 1 month with a much lower re-injury chance.

I'm just using PAX as a goal for about 10 lbs or so. I know that's a long time and not much weight, but I am trying to concentrate on what I can easily sustain over time for good health more than losing weight. Right now, my focus is paying attn to when my body says I am not hungry. It's so easy to overlook and eat out of habit, and I do that too much. I'm also borderline asthmatic (yay seasonal allergies) and easing into the whole workout routine thing.

What I think MAY be happening is...
...it's kinda closing in on "that time of the month", so I may just be naturally bloating anyway.
    . Maybe?

With regard to the issue of bloating, I'm far from knowledgeable, but I play ice hockey and will tell you the week before and first part of, I have to relace my skates a little looser to make up for the water gain. So you might have something there, too, as well as what everyone has said about trends and muscle mass.

I bloat too. I used to worry about it, but then I decided it was probably normal... I feel "chubby" (meaning my hipbones don't jut out as much) for a few days and then it goes away.

I can't believe I admitted this on the internet?

I will be losing weight for PAX, but not though my own choice. My sister is becoming my personal trainer throughout the summer, so either I will be ripped, or have given up and keep the same weight.

Woah, I am so down for this. Stupid desk job has me packing on the pounds . . . a goal date and weight is just the thing :-)

Starting off at 197lbs, my goal by PAX is 165lbs. I've lost more weight in less time before, but it was while deployed, and it's a lot easier away from grocery stores and fast food joints! Small, sustainable changes in diet, eating smaller portions more often and slightly more exercise is in order.

I can offer a tip that helped me last time . . . if you're into music, or watching video, bring it to the gym; it makes the cardio a lot more bearable. I lost 30 pounds in a month and a half once, and most of the exercise I was doing was maintaining an RPM on the elliptical while watching anime :-) Hajime no Ippo, a decent anime and a great motivator, hehe!

For the guys and gals that started earlier: how it is coming along?

I used to do DDR ALOT when I was in college...I lost over 60 lbs (with no diet change!) in a year or two. I really ate nothing but junk but if I had eaten healthier it would have come off alot sooner. I HIGHLY recommend this...as a girl weight loss is very hard but games like ddr make it very easy. You don't have to be good to see results...the simple fact that you're moving and trying to keep up will do the work for you. DDR is also great for maintaining weight loss since the better you get at the game the harder (more strenous) songs you can do.

I don't do ddr anymore since it's not readily available to me and the weight pretty much came back...

for those who don't have iphones or ipod touches there is a site call calorielookup.com that has a very very large data base with food items where you can log what you eat, the quantities and even has an exercise log with number of calories per activity.

It's not bad...i'm just lazy about loggin onto the interwebs...OH AND IT"S FREE TOO!

    I'd like to add:

    http://www.fitday.com/

That helped me out a lot. Coupled with kickboxing classes. Lost about 40 pounds and counting. You don't even really have to try and eat less, just keep track of what you eat and it'll motivate you to eat less.

No weight loss updates per se, as I keep forgetting to actually weigh myself! But it all begins today properly. Finally made it through the incessant weeks of gym inductions, got my program set and all ready to lose 30 lbs or so over the next three months. Bring it on.
