Good question. What do you guys want?

Also, any suggestions for a 1v1/free for all DM game? Bring UT2k4 back? Prey? Quake4? One of our tournament admins suggested HL2 DM which is an idea that, while difficult to imagine, has a certain appeal for me.

RE: HL2-DM. There is a surprising amount of appeal in being able to kill your rivals with a flying toilet.

I'll take this moment to start my campaign for Enemy Territory.

I mean, suggest Enemy Territory, although starting a campaign sounds like a great idea right now... too bad I'm at work.

You know, for a really off-the wall suggestion, how about competitive timed cooperative games? Serious Sam, Half-Life Sven Mod, Black Mesa, and System Shock 2 all have that capability.

When you say Enemy Territory, are you suggested RtCW or Quake Wars?

And your really off-the-wall suggestion is interesting. I'm not sold on doing timed competitions, as I fear it would turn into whoever knows the maps best which is not particularly interesting to me, but...well...bare with me here.

Have you ever played the UT2k4 mod Invasion?

Imagine something like that in Serious Sam 2. So a mod throws countless huge nasty things at you and a teammate, and it tallys up the amount of damage you do against them, and that's what is used through the tournament.

Maybe a better analogy would be the Max Payne mode....I can't even remember what it was called. New York Minute, maybe?

This will probably not happen, as it is...well...a crazy off-the-wall idea. However, I do generally feel that PAX audiences are a lot more interested in crazy off-the-wall ideas than most lan party audiences. This might just be stretching that a bit, though. ;)

Enemy Territory is Return to Castle Wolfenstein, right? God, I never played ET but I loved RTCW - Medic for the win.

Starcraft and WC3. Because I love me some RTS.

There won't be an official starcraft or warcraft3 tournament this year. But I promise RTS will get love.

As always, if you or anyone else would like to run their own unofficial tournament in those games, this is something we can provide limited assistance with.

I would be ecstatic if Quake Wars was available by PAX.
Splash Damage has moved the release date June 5th, but I've found that they tend to push back deadlines, so who knows when it will really be available.

So I really was suggesting the plain ol' RtCW: Enemy Territory.

I would also be ecstatic if Quake Wars was available by PAX. And, provided it didn't suck, if it was released on June 5th there would be an exceptionally high probability it would be used as a tournament game.

Probably not. I haven't played it yet, but I suspect it's probably not going to be a good game to use just because I think the matches will last a little on the long side.

I do think that RTS fans will be pleased, however, so do not despair.

    Hahahah, not THAT pleased. ;)

The official tournaments will pretty much be all be big games. Of course, the final list hasn't been written in stone. I'm also especially interested in BF2 vs. BF2142 thoughts. Or maybe you guys don't need/want a Battlefield game in the tournament? Also be warned that in addition to the major tournaments, we're going to try the Games of the Hour again this year (it didn't go so well last year...*cough*), and also run little mini-contests some of which will likely be smaller independent games.

It's sort of a hassle to come up with fair prizes in such a large (8 player) tournament, but the idea of running Battlefield with 5 players seems pretty blah.

    Any/all opinions are welcome.

I don't play either since I dabble in so many games, But I would lean towards Bf2 since it has lesser system requirements. Less lag = more enjoyment if theres a hardware constraint.

Dystopia might be a game that could hold a tournament for. Ut2k4 I think would be another good tournament.

I'm actually thinking of picking up CS:S and learning to play it half-decently so I can enter the tournament with a friend of mine. His usual partner is off in India finding himself or something like that, so he's stuck unless I man up to the task.

I'll second the notion for Call of Duty 2.

    Also, 2142 and BF2.

For RTS they sould include Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars.

oh. and GTA San Andreas Multipalyer or Multi Theft Auto Mod is so fun.

What were "games of the hour"? Did someone just yell out a game and everyone had to play it or have a tourney with it?

Also with RTS titles, are Supreme Commander and C&C3 on the list or no? While i'm sure people would love to dominate (or attempt) in the game that's been around for 2-3 years which they've amassed a clan around (Warcraft 3 being the point of contention), it might be a lot more appealing to feature newer AAA titles to keep the palette clean and tasty.

And along the lines of my earlier indy game question, will there be any classic game tournies?

    Pretty much, yeah.

    No.

Supreme commander would take too long to play anyway. I dont know if it will even be on the freeplay machines because of that. We are shooting for a 45min time limit for freeplay this year (upped from 30min) but if the line gets long we will shorten it back to 30min until the line gets manageable.
We *Might* try and get C&C3 on the freeplay machines if its released in time and it doesnt suck. Wont be a tourney for it though. (if its not crappy ill push for us to try and get the licences for it to go on freeplay rigs, just because C&C owns my face).

The game of the hour thing is just a timetable of games that we will try to get as many people playing at the same time. At Lan's its usually successful and results in fun for people. Even if theres a game that people dont like all that much, when its a full server its usually fun. (like a full 64player bf2 server for example).

While some of the tourney games would probably have a game of the hour its more just to get as many people playing together as possible rather than framented amongst many different games and servers.

The plan is, as far as games of the hour goes, in addition to what BigRed said, we'll be grabbing random people we see playing the games of the hour and they'll get to compete with each other via assorted mini-games (not necessarily involving pc gaming) to win swag.

There won't be an "official" retro game tournament, although we ALMOST did that. In the end, we thought more people would have fun hurling toilets at each others' heads via HL2: DM.

However, one of the things we would like to do is run BYOC exclusive mini-tournaments, and retro games (being small and easy to install/uninstall) would be a good fit there. The same goes for independant games.

Warcraft3 will not be a tournament this year...if you're interested in newer games in that category, I think you'll be pretty happy.

To all people thinking Supreme Commander matches would take too long:

I've been playing ranked SupCom matches online since launch, and have about 50 games under my belt, and I rarely see a 1v1 match that goes beyond 30 minutes, particularly on the small maps. Restrict the tourney to the 5x5-10x10 km maps and I'm sure it'd be feasible. You could even have a sudden death option if the match goes too long-- just declare the person with the most points at the end of 30 minutes the winner.

I've seen matches as short as 8 or 14 minutes, with skilled players on both sides. I'd love to see a Supreme Commander tournament at PAX '07.

Ive been playing online since launch (mostly with friends and at lans) and the matches last quite a bit longer than that. Plus RTS games are not very fun in a timed game such as that. Only fun to play in if you play it to completion.

Ive seen *many* 1v1 matches with really good guys of equal skill take 2+ hours. The only short ones ive seen were where people had a huge difference in skill and one guy walked all over the other one.

This applies to most RTS's. They usually take a long time (so its not very good for a tournament) if the guys are of equal skill.

I've seen 1v1 matches with really skilled players take well over an hour as well, on the big maps (which as I mentioned, a limited map size would take care of), but if you log on to GPGnet and check the replays of the top ten players (there are about 50 posted), then average the game time, it comes to around 23 minutes per game.

Sadly, as you said, RTS tourneys are already decided upon, but I still believe SupCom should be available in freeplay. Just limit the map selection.
