Gears of War is no longer the best looking next-gen game in my eyes.

God, I mean...fuck.

Some new info on character classes thanks to Zetetic Elench -
Since it has been mentioned a few times at GDC and around the boards, I think it is now safe to confirm that we are going to have 6 character classes for you to customize your Commander Shepard to be as you play Mass Effect.

They are:
Soldier – Soldiers are Combat specific characters.
Engineer – Engineers are Technology centered characters.
Adept – Adepts are characters especially skilled with Biotic abilities.
Infiltrator – Characters who blend their Combat and Technical abilities.
Sentinel – Characters who balance using Biotic abilities and Technology.
Vanguard – Characters who mix their skills at Combat with their Biotic abilities.

We will have more on the different classes in upcoming updates. So stay tuned.

    Man oh man!

Those two top screenshots are the best, but they all look pretty good.

Plus, we get some more shots of the fanservice-y female outfits. :winky:

Just in case anyone missed it
    5. When is the release date of Mass Effect?

Bob McCabe: We at BioWare do not know the exact date of release yet ... I prefer to be conservative in my guessing. If I were a fan, and not an employee of BioWare who gets to look at the schedule, I'd probably like the sound of March & April.

It's pretty obvioous it's not coming out in March or April, but I think May/June is entirely likely.

    May/June for sure.

Nothing on the 360 can release anywhere near November. Not even something as huge as Mass Effect or Bioshock.

Does anyone else think that human male character (largely basing this on previous screens, actually) just looks like an absurd generic "play by my own rules" smoldering angst guy?

Edit: That said, I am hyped as hell about this game.

I do. Good thing you can change gender and what your character looks like.

I don't know...several of those screen look really bad. It looks they're doing a N64-era-esque "drop 3D characters on top of a pre-rendered background" technique, which is really jarring. The characters just seem to be floating over top of blurry backdrops.

Those background aren't prerendered, and it's blurry because of depth of field. I think it's a fantastic looking effect.

You are actually the key that opens up the portal to this world. Part of the game will be spent finding out how you can use yourself to close the gate.

i see where he's coming from, though. some of the models don't look like they connect to the ground. this is something i notice in, like, every 3d shot ive ever seen. it tends to look better in-game, but always weird to see what looks like a character floating atop the background.

I noticed that as well, and I think it is because of the lack of distinctive and dark shadows for the characters. Other than that, everything looks superfine.

The last two screenshots suffer from this. The previous ones, not so much.

Unless this game gets positively ripped apart in the early reviews I think it's a pickup for me. It's purrrrrdy - and I do likes my HD.

It's worth pointing out that the guys in that top screenie are not the guys that come round and wipe civilisation out every 50,000 years - the guys in the screenshot are the Geth, who are another AI race.

They still really like to shoot you, though.

It's definitely on for Q2 release barring something unforseen, according to constant hints in interviews.

And I'm most excited to play the character making game again. You even get to choose Shepard's backstory.

I'm assuming the voice acting changes with your chosen character as well?

I wonder how many times they will re-record the script. No more than four I'm guessing. (Generic white male, Generic white female, Generic black male and Generic black female.)

Well, they've mentioned that they're working on doing something unique with the voices... My favourite theory so far is that you'll be able to pick from recorded voices and then fiddle with their pitch etc to get it how you want it.

I'm fine with that, considering that Biowares games usually doesn't even give you one set of voice acting for your protagonist.

Is it possible these (especially the action shot of that lizard thing being shot) were taken while the camera was rotating? The game probably uses a blurring effect on everything but the charater models like Lost Planet and Shadow of the Colossus to keep things smooth even while changing the viewpoint quickly.

With a new Halo and GTA coming out this fall, does this mean the MGS4 will be gobbled up by hype for the other two, similar to what happened with MGS3?

Not really. I mean, these are from Bioware - they're going to be taken to show stuff off. I really doubt the camera was moving, except maybe as a scripted movement as part of a sequence, but it doesn't look like that.

But I do think it might be a cinematic effect, like you see in MGS, for example.
