I think everyone can agree that Chronotrigger had the best SNES soundtrack.

Chrono Trigger was the best SNES RPG, anyone who says Earthbound was better is delusional.
Hey now. There's also Super Mario RPG. I think it deserves at least an honorable mention.

Final Fantasy IV and VI, hmmmm?

Also mentioning Lufia 2 because I just know it won't get mentioned if I don't. Chrono Trigger is still a very fond game of mine though.

    Secret of Evermore?

    I'll go hide now.
You are a being after my own heart.

SoE was very, very underrated and just caught flak for not being Secret of Mana.

Well, okay, so the Alchemy system with a bit imbalanced and the bazooka was ridiculous, but it had that certain charm.

I....I might have to retract my sign-up after that, Dunadumb.

    I'll think on it.

its has the edge for having a much better sound track and an opera scene.
Aside from the aforementioned part with Shadow, I think CT did its action-y parts better than FFVI, but overall FFVI did its drama parts better (opera scene, Locke/Celes/Rachel, anything involving Terra).

CT did its prime drama scene extremely well too.
    Resurrecting Crono.

ESPECIALLY if you brought Marle like I did.

Final Fantasy VI I'll give you, even if I found it hard to get into.

Also, Super Mario RPG makes my eyes bleed, the less said about that the better.

Also has anyone also mentioned that Chrono Trigger had one of the best and most memorable soundtracks of it's time? Because it did.

    i'm fine with that.

I sometimes find it difficult to decide which one was the absolute best because they are both so good.

You're assuming that all the love for CT is based on nostalgia, which is false.
No, I'm saying that if the game is good enough, its successful elements will be utilized in subsequent games. Thus, you gain the exposure to the concept behind the content in newer forms, forming your own memories and thus own nostalgia.

Going back to the root of it might be amusing from an intellectual sense, but unless you have a sense of nostalgia for why you're doing it (platform, game itself, whatever), your gaming standards have changed. It can't be as good to you now as it was to people who played it then.

This would be true if the things CT introduced were actually successfully replicated in future games, which sadly isn't true. Very few games have no random encounters, do combat on the main map instead of a separate battle screen, and have a NG+ system that is designed for and not simply tacked on. CT does that and does everything that make standard RPG's good.

Many modern games do one or more of the things CT did, but for the most part it stands unique in the quality of it's concepts and their execution.

If you're saying nostalgia makes things better, sure it does, but the presence of nostalgia doesn't have any effect on the quality of the game one way or the other, so the idea that old games are irrelevant because of it is not correct.

Oh, and for the record, I think my first webpage was a CT fanpage (definitely one of the first) back in mid 90s. D: Oh god.

Square Nintendo RPG was the era of RPGs for me, I haven't been able to get into them after that aside from FFVII which I also was far too involved in. >_> But it's probably because I wasn't a kid anymore after that. :(

I miss being able to sit down with an RPG and just have nothing to worry about in life until I beat the game.

Secret of Mana is uber-memorable due to having played through it with three people literally always being there, we all picked a character and maxed our our spells and weapons and everything, my cousin and brother and I. Most obsessive summer of gaming ever.
