Hey guys,

I'm a freelance editorial cartoonist seeking to benefit from PENNY ARCADE'S success. Specifically, I'm hoping to capitalize on the smart, imaginative, and intensely loyal crew that man the site's forums. That's a lot to ask for a newbie with no cred so disregard this post if you find it a personal offense. Not my intention at all.

Truth is I've read comments provided to other artists and I'm impressed. It's hard to get insightful feedback and you guys seem to provide it in spades.

Feel free to visit the site: http://www.toonouttheworld.com to view the pitch "RESONANCE" in the Graphic Novels section.

Thanks in advance to those who feel inclined to offer feedback (positive/negative). It's all about making the art better.

And yes, I did just whore my site and not place images in the thread. Unfortunately the images do not have a URL since I automated the photo galleries using Flash.

Much respect,

Sketchy17

Try photo bucket, or hosting them some where in a folder on your site so you can post them.

That is no excuse. Even if it was, having to navigate through your site to get to the stuff is more than most are willing to do. Do what Iruka says and get some hosting. There's lots of free stuff.

Also, don't sign your posts. Your name is right there beside them. We know who you are.

Everyone takes the time out to host their images and link them as the rules ask, why can't you? Doing what you're doing is kinda like throwing dirt in the other forumer's faces.

    There you go.

The military vehicles look pretty nice. The alien Guyver-looking guy not so much. The perspective is really screwed up (the back arm, for instance, wouldn't appear that small, I don't think) and it's hard to tell what's going on in the head area.

If you were going for anything close to human anatomy, the legs look way too thick, and its torso couldn't twist like that. The scene could benefit from spacing things out, I think. I doubt the military would send units that bunched together.

edit2: sorry, I accidentally deleted the image tag thing. It's url. Actually, PhotoBucket probably has it ready-made for you- look around the pre-made links.

Yeah, look down the left side when you upload the image. In the "Share This Image", just click in the "IMG Code" field, the code is automatically copied to your clipboard and you can paste it in your posts and the images will show up here.

Thanks for the comment. Yeah, I agree about the legs. They're pretty exaggerated and need to be toned down. And excellent eye about the bunched up military vehicles. I was thinking about EVANGELION when the angels attacked and military hardware would roll down the street in this tight formation. Oh well...

A tight formation might be necessitated by a city's layout, but it seems like you've set the battle in a desert with plenty of open space.

    For the new pic:
First big no-no: do not use photos for backgrounds in drawn art. It looks tacky as hell.

Secondly, there is no reason for the F22 to ever come that close. It can shoot at it from afar with guns and from even farther away with missiles. Getting that close is only a danger to the pilot.

Perspective is off again, you've got the plane at an angle and the robot at a flat side view.

Agree about the photo background. Cutting corners didn't work.

The idea was to have the robot dropped from a B-2 (or other flying wing aircraft) escorted by F-22s. The F-22s would fly past (horizontally) as the the robot dropped like a bomb. You're a touch critic but a good one.

I'm gonna go ahead and point out you need better light sources, especially in the sunset like that one above. Like use the sun as a light source you know. Hint hint. Otherwise not a bad start.

Gradients always seem to make images look very flat. I would suggest less photoshop "tricks" and get a better foundation.

Oh I see, the robot's a good guy. Okay, but the escort plane still wouldn't be flying that close, I don't think. And definitely not that close behind, maybe off to the side.

Good call. I think the shadows need to be darker to emphasize the light source (as you said).

i really like the helicopter in the first one
    you've got some great potential

however, the ac is not really a place where hardcore fans of the comic hang out. we're a pretty small community here, so you'll get feedback, but if you're hoping to leech a few fans off of the penny arcade comic fanbase, then i'm worried you're barking up the wrong tree.

i like your stuff so far though, tam gave some good tips, i'll just say welcome.

Yahhh not to mention since the shading is exactly the same it looks like a tiny fighter jett is about to run into his bum

edit: also they have the same level of visibility applied which also causes them to feel "in the same area"

Thanks! Not looking for hits on the site but I am looking for feedback. In the future I'll submit rougher copies so I can get the basics right before trying to hide mistakes with Photoshop.

Yes, and I'll try to place the F-22 somewhere in the composition so my hero doesn't look like he's getting an enema.

edit: thanks again for the heads up, Tam.
