Nice Zerg, but the highlight needs to extend further onto the tip of his nose. Looks like he's pushing his nose up onto a window or something.

looking good. maintaining that texture in animation is going to be a bitch. does the game go to the coast or anything to justify crab-men?

There is a body of water involved, but these guys aren't the product of natural evolution. I sort of abandoned the "beastmen" concept when I lost the "American frontier".

Mental note: I need to change my sig.

You should give ditching the American west idea some second thought before going with it.

Video games are already full of laser guns and generic monsters.

I have no doubt about that, but gameplay comes first. It's a sidescrolling exploration/action game, and I just don't know if the western frontier really matches up with that. Man's greatest enemy on the frontier was man, and while a case could be made for nature overtaking that position, I don't think it would be in a way that allowed for the gameplay I want.

Believe me, I've given it many a second, third, fourth thought. I'd love to do a Wild West game, but it's going to take a different engine and a better artist than I am to do it well.

I think you're trying to over rationalize your story/setting. I'd much prefer a game where I'm a cowboy flipping around hovering cactus platforms and shit shooting lightning out of a revolver battling creatures and enemies rooted in Indian and Frontier myth and legend-

-than I would a game where I'm fighting random monsters with generic scifi weaponry in generic scifi environment while wearing a cowboy hat.

I second your idea. I'd play the shit out of a cowboy metroid-vania. Especially if you had to fight animal totems like Hare, Buffalo, and Coyote, redesigned as tough-as-hell bosses. Then maybe move southward to some aztec temples and eventually a huge nazca-come-to-life megaboss.

I haven't really put a lot of effort into explaining the game concept in this forum, because this is the AC. If I've given the impression that it's a generic sci-fi game in a generic sci-fi setting, it's because I haven't made much attempt to describe the game itself. The game's world setting is equal parts wasteland and westland, the game's play setting is a frontier town and its massive cathedral/ossuary. The tech references are there to facilitate the gameplay where necessary, and have overall very little influence on the environment.

Other than that, we may just have different ideas about the kind of games we'd like to play. I'd prefer things with a little more internal consistency, I guess.

Edit: A side scrolling shooter like Gunstar Heroes or Contra would work pretty well for the type of game you two are describing. I'm just not sure how to get a lot of vertical exploration out of a largely uninhabited place.

Even with your description, it seems very unoriginal for the game market.

You should however, make a thread and post everything in it so far, including those youtube vids. you're bound to get more feedback n

Agreed, about the messy lines, not the sucking. Are there any pastel/coloured paper pads you can buy that aren't quite so rough? I have a heluva time trying to be neat with them, I'm generally pretty messy anyway, but more so when I'm using these. I'm not blaming the equipment, more trying to mitigate my bad habits.

I like how it came out for the most part, but it really is just a ripoff of the original image though. But thanks!

It really just seems like a natural fit for the subject matter. I mean, it would actually make sense that people were shooting turtle shells. I wanted to include a foot soldier, but I figured the other characters were more important.

I would totally pick Bebop though. He would kick so much ass.
