Jesus Christ I know this is old news but Warren Ellis is goddamn insane

I hadn't realized that I had missed two thirds of his Hellblazer run so I figured I'd read it

I got a six part story where John tracks down his ex-girlfriend's killer, eventually beating the shit out of him, giving him a couple hits of acid, and then shutting him in the morgue drawer with her room-temperature, leaky corpse

And the dialog in that scene takes it to a whole new plane of "oh Jesus what the"

    No no

    I'm good

(Also the very next story is another of his, this time about a room where this man has basically done nothing but kill people for 20 years and now the room is so soaked with death and violence that when police try to go in there and arrest him they just rip each other apart

    literally)

Probably late to the party with this bit of news but...
Issue #54 will also mark Doctor Voodoo's exit from the pages of “New Avengers,” at least for the time being. “To my excitement, the character got his own series,” Bendis confirmed. “He's going to come back into my book in a little bit, but not right now. I have some unfinished business with other characters that I want to attend to and I think Doctor Voodoo needs the full attention on him right now. If the character hadn't been picked up I would have kept him in the book just to keep the ball rolling. Once the ball was rolling though it became, 'Yay! I get to read a Doctor Voodoo book!'”

I've been thinking a lot about the ostensible racism in Tintin, though

The non-white ethnicities are always drawn in the most offensively caricatured way possible

But whenever colonialism or white cruelty shows up, Tintin leaps to the defense of the natives. In The Blue Lotus, he stops a fat white british man from beating a rickshaw driver with his cane, and then the rickshaw driver's brother smuggles him out of the city later.

It's weird, the racial caricatures are more of a means of identification then dehumanizition, because Herge regularly made ethnic characters humanized contributors to the adventure worthy of recognition

Except black people, I think he may not have liked them so much

It's true. It gets a bad rap, but it was just a sign of the times for the most part. I mean, you look at any American comics, or even Tezuka's work from far enough back, you see some shit that either makes you cringe with uncomfortability or laugh harder than most would find appropriate.

Honestly, I think the Tintin stories are sort of representative of the more liberal aspects of racial perceptions around the turn of the century

Well, I know some of the more "offensive" stuff was subsequently redone years later, at least in the cases where Herge actually acknowledged that he was maybe a little out of line.

A lot of the stuff from the late 30's and after is more culturally aware. I think it was just the really early stuff from the early 30's that was suspect. I've never read any of the actual original early stories, so I couldn't say.

Yeah, I just discussed them with my brother, and he says that Herge was pretty much a fascist back in the '30s. White mans burden sorta jazz. It wasn't until after WWII that the Tintin stuff became more liberal.

I'm gonna take some time soon to compare the early tintins and the late ones.
