    You will love screenprinting!

And your style will lend itself to it beautifully, I think.

Once you get into it, it teaches you a lot of control over pallette choice as well as a few tricks to make less seem like more. Plus the joys of layering, blend-fountains, etc.

Actually, this has given me a bit of an idea - it would be cool to do a collaborative piece with a small handful of forum regulars, and then I can do a tutorial on how I approach the colour seperations and show the process of the final thing being printed... all contributers would then get at least a couple of prints of the final piece.

    I will think on this...

I'm still really enjoying attempting to simplify my work as much as possible, relying on shapes and textures.

HERE is a work IN progress:

    land_wip.gif

As was suggested in the Doodle thread, bi-plane and angry cloud have been added.

    Still to do:
    • More bits and pieces to add - make your suggestions!
    • There will be some 'earth' to go under the land, rather than just a straight horizontal crop.
    • The texture is a little bit harsh in places - still playing with that
    • Currently too many colours -- I will likely reduce 'em so it's less ARRGH and more cohesive
    • Something else

Once I feel this is complete, I will likely start a new one which I plan to just add to and add to and add to...

    This is good fun.

edit: although looking at this now, the colours are really annoying me. It looks like I've applied some crap, over-exposure filter... I will fix that.

The blue guy bugs me. It looks like he's waving to the whale, but the line on his hand suggests we can see his palm. Which would mean his face is staring at the bottom right corner of the frame, rather than into the landscape. Do you know how much this bugs me now that I've seen it?

I have to leave the thread this instant.

There is truly some excellent art going on here. I don't know why I haven't said so before.

The blue man's left arm is annoying me, though. It looks as though he may have dislocated his shoulder so that he may sit on his forearm.

I could suggest a thousand things to go in the image, but first, is there a theme going here?

There is no theme other than random stuff which looks interesting together.

Re. the blueman, just to clarify. His left arm is waving, his right arm is just resting by his side on the ground. I wanted him to be weird and lanky and stylised; I also think he's a ghost too, so while physicality issues don't bother him, they still bother the viewer.

Does it make more or less sense close up?

    blueman.jpg

Obv. I need to turn the left hand so it looks like he's waving to the whale but anything else? There's a reason I don't usually draw people...!

the hand doesn't bother me personally because your work is always heavily stylized and more "graphic designy" than "anatomically correcty"

the thing that IS bothering me now is the tangent his toe forms with the hill.

The colours are still bugging me; I actually kind of like this just monotone.

Still a little more to do though I feel.

That hand!. The line on his palm is making it look like he's waving at us, but since his body/nose turns to face the scene it looks totally wrong. On top of that, the thumb should be on the other side of the hand if he was waving at the scene.

Oh DR, you pain me so...

    I don't think I can see what you're seeing...

His left hand is waving, so the the thumb (at least) is correct.

Excuse my terrible paintover but here's how the limbs are in my mind:

    blueman2.jpg

Sort of a half gesture, half wave.

If I hold my own (left) hand up as I've I'm waving to someone, I don't hold it palm-out like I was telling them to HALT; my hand naturally turns counter-clockwise slightly and thus someone stood directly to my right could see my palm.

If this looks totally wrong, someone please throw me a drawover and help me out here! :P

Perhaps I should just give him a big drill or a hook instead of a hand...

    This:

At the moment that arrow is facing toward us, and without any other indicators, it looks like the hands on backwards or the wave doesn't match the gaze of the dude.

? I thought DR was saying he doesn't like how the hand is facing at us

This is probably like the best drawing of a human body I have ever done in my life and YOU GUYS ARE TEARING IT TO SHREDS!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111 D:

Seriously though, I do get what you're saying -- I guess the whale looks like it is actually off to the blueman's left somewhat, so his hand should be waving away from the viewer, not towards.

Looking at it now, I get that.

I think if I actually drop the whale down onto the second row of waves, so it's no longer sat on the water, it should appear to be more level with the man and thus his hand would make more sense?

    Does that make sense?

This is a level of detail which has been hitherto unplumbed in my work. This thing is going to be so small on my website that nobody will even see the hand. I may even shrink the hand. I'm doing this for you DR!

edit: don't worry Loom, I got what you were saying :)

edit2: just so people can see it in context as it got bumped off:

All I know is, if this were me, I'd do what I have suggested, because I am an internationally famous artist.

(I have had 1 hit on my website from Palestine, don't you know!)

Anyway, yeah, for me, the hand makes zero sense, It has an escher quality that makes my mind bleed. Maybe you're in to that kind of thing? Maybe you enjoy eating babies too -- WHO AM I TO JUDGE?

I think if he's waving at the whale, in the distance, his palm should not be facing the viewer. Whether the whale is on top of the waves of not doesn't really impact the direction the palm should be facing.

I am making a mountain out of a molehill here, probably. BUT THIS IS THE ONLY THING IVE EVER BEEN ABLE TO CRITICISE YOU FOR AND GOD IT FEELS GOOD.

    Updatery time...

photo of my work at a recent exhibition:

    holbeck_artshow.jpg

Plus, I'm finally getting round to screenprinting a poster which I designed last year, and thought people might be interested in how the colour seperations work.

This will be a three colour print on black stock.

The original digital design was very texture heavy but this would be somewhat tricky to achieve with only 3 colours, so you'll notice the texture is actually 'negative' on the white layer so little spots of black will show through underneath the yellow and red layers, hopefully still giving me a textured finish.

My transparancies will be printed like this:

    NM_colourseps.gif

And hopefully the print process will be thus:

    NM_printanim.gif

I'll update again when I actually start printing, hopefully in the next couple of weeks.
