    if only he had made a moving speech about losing his job in the bad economy and not being able to keep up with a changing world that has no more use for an old cowboy like him
    or the flawed state of child custody laws preventing him from ever seeing or bonding with his kids
    or whatever

    he would have been applauded by the crowd and acquitted on any charges
