The problem isn't really the laws the laws on the books would work fine its just enforcing them is an issue. mainly its due to the broken instant background check. States don't seem to have a requirement when they have to update or submit data to the national database for the instant background checks so people that shouldn't get firearms do get them. As for the issue on assault rifles, I don't really see why anyone would need a firearm for hunting or sport that can fire 600 rounds a minute. Unless you want to just make the hamburger right there in the field I suppose.

well you see i won't even get into the definition of the second amendment but as far as assault rifles go, if you can pull the trigger 600 times a minute on a semiautomatic rifle and reload enough to do so, i guess you're superman.

because really, "assault rifle" as reported by any misinformed group or put out by a group with an agenda, is a misused term. an "assault rifle", in the most likely scenario you're going to hear about it (from the news), is a semi-automatic firearm chambered in a small round (like .223, 5.56, 7.62) that probably has a black stock, a folding stock, a flash suppressor, a detachable magazine, bayonet lug, etc etc.

the rifle you're thinking of is a fully automatic rifle similar to rifles issued by the military or the police that usually has all of these things, but has one defining feature, a selector switch.

these automatic rifles are typically unavailable to the law abiding public as they're outrageously expensive (see NFA acts of '34, '68, '86, mainly '86 pertaining to automatic firearms), as you must go through the BATFE to receive a Class III license and pay a tax stamp, and any legal automatic you wish to own is probably around ~$5000 and up, because in 1986 they decided no more new automatic firearms would be allowed to be released or sold to the public. so any legal automatic firearm you see somebody shooting at a range or in a video, is a minimum of 23 years old.

sooooooooo i really hope this clears up the confusion about "assault rifles", and the surprising thing is, even the semi-automatic rifles are usually a fair bit of expensive and are rarely (like, .02%) used in crimes.

and as far as the background check goes, i have seen unpaid traffic tickets hold up a firearm sale after NICS put a hold on the sale.

there's about 900 homicides in germany every year

Wow how many people live there?

    That seems low.

    80 million

    97.3% get caught

I know a few dudes that are going to own some fully auto ak47s down here in south carolina because they can, after going through all the required bullshit.

I'd say I'd have nothing against it but then shit like this happens.

How did a convicted felon get a fully auto ak47 anyhow?

well i'm assuming illegally, of course.

i mean, getting things illegally is what criminals do. and it's not like they have a real regard for the law anyway.

and those guns that are supposedly going from america to mexico? the US gives a lot of firearms to the mexican military.

and keep in mind that 20% of the mexican police/authorities are under investigation for corruption at any one time, not to mention the high rate of AWOL they experience.

    hmm...

edit: but nowhere did it say it was fully automatic in the story, and it doesn't take much to fire 30 rounds. i said it was impossible to shoot 600 rounds a minute with a semi-automatic rifle and reload 200 or 300 times, but 30 rounds ain't much. but it could have been automatic. all i'm saying is, it's illegal for a felon to own a gun anyway.

Yes because it is exactly like that everywhere.

And New York is full of pedophiles and rapists because of SVU. And Las Vegas is full of murderers and hot super-scientists because of CSI.

That is exactly how TV works, they don't embellish anything and everything is exactly like that at all times over every part of the city.

Honestly, the scary thing about that Baltimore map is it seems like it isn't concentrated anywhere in particular.

Chicago's shootings map is all over the place, but if you know the city there's a lot of clearly defined neighborhoods that see just a few per year or maybe none at all. Most of the crime that goes on happens exactly where you'd expect it to happen.
